As you may or may not have gathered, I'm actually up here on a trip from San Diego (home) this week. Since most of my playing is in the southern California area, and I try to avoid sending people mail that has no real use for them, I've started a mailing list just for this part of the state. I'll let you know anytime something is going on in this area and I'll also send you anything of a more "global" nature such as Internet shows, recording information, etc... Tonight (Thursday 6/1), I'll be playing in Santa Rosa again at Aroma Roasters. They're at 95 5th street (707 ) 576-7765. I'll be playing from 8-10pm. If you're not familair with them, they're a coffee shop, which means the show is free and there's actually chairs to sit in and no traffic directly behind me! This is the last No. CA show for awhile as I/we are booked pretty solid through the next few months in So. CA. Who is we? I play both as a soloist and with my group called Agent 22. The music is essentially the same, with Agent 22 adding drums and a guy named Jimmy Patton who plays two guitars at once (and is generally just amazing). You can find all you might like to know about who we are and what we do at: www.thossounds.com One last bit that might interest you... I host an Internet radio show devoted to music of the Chapman Stick (the instrument I play). You can find it every Tuesday from 10:30-noon pacific time at www.worldmusicradio.com This is a station that brodcasts live 24 hours a day across the Internet playing all kinds of great music that you're probably not likely to hear anywhere else. Anyhow, thanks again for signing up! - --Tom Griesgraber ------------------------------ Date: 01 Jun 2000 16:49:09 -0400 From: Jeffrey_Rose@eri.eisai.com Subject: Worst Band Names... I'm reposting this from an Audities Digest post last week. Some of these cracked me up. Jeffro Currently on Salon.com's Table Talk, there's a board called "Worst Possible Band Names." Since I was bored and not particularly inclined to work tonight, I collected a few dozen favorites out of the 7500+ posts on the board. To those with easily-offended sensibilities, I warn you that a few of these are a little blue. But they're funny, which counts for a lot. I will seriously entertain demo tapes from anyone who forms a band (or temporarily changes the name they already have) and/or writes a song using one of these names. If I get enough good ones, I'll consider a compilation album. No, I'm not kidding. Cause when Andy is left on his own, he obviously doesn't know what he is doing. These last 2 XTC albums are horrible. With a strong producer, Andy is wonderful. Left on his own-uggh. I can't believe I waited this long for this crap. All I can do is believe that there are dozens of demos that I would have liked. A strong producer might have identified the better songs. There must have been an aweful lot to choose from, judging by the amount of time that has gone by. Which leads me to Robyn and his last 2 bland albums. My 2 favorite Robyn songs both didn't make it to their albums. Watch yer Intelligence, and Alright Yeah. I just don't understand this. But it leads me to believe that somewhere out there are some great tunes. I wish Robyn had worked with a strong band and a strong producer. I would rather have a great single album than 2 bland hit and miss pieces. I still like the leftovers to go as extra tracks on the singles. I just don't like this idea of releasing 2 records. Just give me one great record, please. And next time, make it good. Hurricane season begins June 1 From the National Weather Service and The Associated Press June 1 is the first day of the Atlantic hurricane season, which continues through Nov. 30. In an average season, there are 10 named tropical storms of which six reach hurricane strength. Historically, most tropical storms and hurricanes occur during August, September and October. The 1999 season was above normal with 12 named storms of which eight became hurricanes. Five of these tropical cyclones made landfall in the United States: • Hurricane Bret in southern Texas • Tropical Storm Dennis in North Carolina • Hurricane Floyd in North Carolina and paralleling the mid-Atlantic states into New England • Tropical Storm Harvey in South Florida • And Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irene in the Florida Keys and South Florida respectively. • Hurricanes Jose and Lenny caused significant damage in the Leeward Islands. Because of its unusual direction (west to east), much of Lenny's damage was caused by large breaking waves on the west side of the islands. The names for the tropical storms and hurricanes in 2000 are Alberto, Beryl, Chris, Debby, Ernesto, Florence, Gordon, Helene, Isaac, Joyce, Keith, Leslie, Michael, Nadine, Oscar, Patty, Rafael, Sandy, Tony, Valerie and William. The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration has predicted there will be 11 tropical storms, seven of which would be hurricanes. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Jun 2000 18:18:51 -0700 From: Eb Subject: CL & VV & E OK...so a month or so ago, I first talked to the A&R guy at Varese Vintage about the new Claudine Longet compilation (released May 9th). During the conversation, I mentioned my longtime Longet notion: that her life would be just *perfect* for one of those "E! True Hollywood Story" episodes on the E! Channel. The guy answers, "Hey, that *is* a good idea." I've talked to him once or twice since then, but not in about three weeks. So yesterday, someone (not him) emails me notification that on June 11th, guess-who is featured on "E! True Hollywood Story." Wow! What's more, I called the label guy today to ask about the details, and he didn't even *know* about the program. Strange. Longet's various promotional forces don't seem to communicate very well. Anyway, if you have cable or satellite TV service, consider yourself forewarned. So, which is the most disappointing, the new Sonic Youth, XTC or King Crimson album? They're all worthy contenders, but I'll go with Sonic Youth. Phew. (please ignore the strange e-mail address - I'm at work. Work!) Anyway, it was a really good show. I'd never seen Vic Chesnutt before, so it was a big thrill for me to watch him perform. He has a great, mellow, dishevelled quality about him that contrasted well with Hersh's wired, intense performance style. He and Hersh alternated songs - there was no setlist, and while Hersh always had a song ready to go, Chesnutt prefaced each song with "Uh... I'm gonna play... I'm gonna play...Um... I'm gonna play... THIS!" I didn't recognize most of the songs he played, but that was OK, they were all great. Hersh, unfortunately, mostly played her bland newer material - I think my enjoyment of her shows is mainly based on how much Muses material she plays. (Only one song this time - the brilliant "Juno.") She and Chesnutt bantered entertainly between songs. After one bit of witty repartee, Chesnutt quietly remarked, "I'm a little bit country," and everyone cracked up. For the encore, the two sang songs together. It was weird hearing Hersh singing a Chesnutt song, with her usual wailing vocalization. The very last song was "Your Ghost," off Hersh's "Hips and Makers" (one of my favorite albums of all time). Chesnutt sang Michael Stipe's part, with immense passion, and it was absolutely gorgeous - it actually brought tears to my eyes. When I played Chesnutt's songs on my radio show, I used to announce that he was God. A running joke during the show last night was that he was God's pal, so I guess I was close. :) n. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Jun 2000 13:57:13 -0700 From: "Colin Meloy" Subject: Fegs of the World Unite and Take Over Howdy Feg Nation! "boarded up" needed one more rewrite (though the colin songs are stronger than on av1; of course, it would be hard to be worse than "fruit nut"), and "church of women" is around a minute too long. i do like "stupidly happy" more than i thought i would based on the title and skimming the lyrics. same with "man who murdered love." sorta feels like a middling effort at this point. a common occurance amongst british 80's survivors this year (see smith, robert and johnson, matt and their comrades). ===== "Life is just a series of dogs." -- George Carlin __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I responded to Glen privately with a big long message about me me me, but to sum up... yes, I am good friends with Tom Griesgraber, the amazing Stickboy. This of course is the second odd Hitchcock-Stick coincidence to pop up here, the other being that I knew Stick player, Stick-list moderator, MIDI-controller designer, Mark-brother, and all-around nice guy Vance Gloster long before I'd ever heard the phrase "rubber shark" or subscribed to fegmaniax. The Internet "radio" station www.worldmusicradio.org which Glen asked about is based in San Diego, and while I'm not particularly fond of the term "world music," I have considered volunteering there as a D.J. just for the experience. Their schedule does include a number of speciality shows, one of them being Tom's "Stick Show" which showcases the Stick. I don't actually listen to Tom's show very often anymore, mainly because I really don't like the music of very many Stick artists. Although, I'll admit that I've purchased a ton of Stick-related CD's, simply so that I can study playing techniques. On World Music Radio, I've found Lisa Late-Night's show, "The Rhythm Method," which tends to veer more into the areas of "electronica" and "fusion" (not the jazz stuff - material I would classify as "hybrid"), pretty interesting. Anyone familiar with the "World" section of a record store can guess what the station sounds like most of the time. Anyhow, the Stick artists I tend to listen to most of the time are Sean Malone (of Cynic), Tony Levin, Trey Gunn (who now plays a Warr Guitar) and Greg Howard (his recent release "Water on the Moon" is especially impressive). And, since I hang out with Tom a lot, his stuff. But I hear it live so much, I never put in his CD. Fellow Lynch-fans: you can see Captain Picard holding, and sometimes playing (depending on the version) a Stick in the movie "Dune." You can also see Sting in nothing but metallic speedos.
