No, really, they are. They also have many many things in common. They have both left Warner Brothers Records. They have both released new CDs exclusively online since their split with WB (not "the WB," mind you, for then there would be demons and/or gingham). Both have played the infamous Largo club in L.A. And...here's the kicker...they have decided to embark on a short West Coast tour together this June. And we guarantee the shit will be funny. In related Hitchcock news, Robyn is writing a novel, his first, and it will be out next year, and anyone that writes a book is immediately smart. Also, Jonathan Demme's Hitchcock concert film Storefront Hitchcock is out now on DVD. As for Grant, well he is currently recording with Jon Brion (again-this means instant cred) for an upcoming album out later this year. On what label? Me not know! He is currently talking to other major labels who might be interested. (I'm assuming this is some sort of epiphany-like experience, like satori or some other sudden attainment of wisdom.) My guess is that the writer just assumed that since ASfB was on "Editions PAF!" that Robyn had left WB completely. I wouldn't be surprised if SPIN had completely sacked the entire fact-checking staff to cut costs (assuming it ever even had one), but in their defense, it was probably an easy assumption to make, because major labels don't usually allow that sort of thing. Not content with releasing one of the finest albums of last year (JfS etc.) he has now issued AsfB, a sparkling collection of songs recorded at the same sessions. To call it an out-takes album would imply a drop in quality, but that's palpably not the case. "I managed to negotiate a deal with Warners to put this stuff out myself, but only on the Internet or mail order. I call it my invisible album. Hopefully Editions PAF! will become my back catalogue label." He's the missing link between Lennon and REM. JUNE Member of The Soft Boys and Katrina And The Waves releases his first solo album in nearly 20 years - it's well worth the wait. Kimberley Rew, according to fellow Soft Boy Robyn Hitchcock, played guitar like "Jimi Hendrix in sulphuric acid." Kim has calmed down a little since, and Tunnel Into Summer is more a showcase for his winning way with melody lines and hooks (witness the Rew-penned 1985 hit Walking On Sunshine). On his only other solo outing American powerpoppers The dB's acted as his backing band; here Dave Mattacks, Glen Tilbrook, Hitchcock and another ex-Soft Boy, Andy Metcalfe, are among the players. The opening number, Simple Pleasures, establishes the tone: big, jangling guitars, engaging lyrics and harmonies from heaven: and the entire set is studded with similar sonic jewels. These range from the country-tinged THe Radio Played Good Vibrations through the Kinksy Little Ray Of Sunshine to transcendental title track, which makes a journey from Leicester to Northampton sound enticing. This album travels first class. Both reviews are by Joe Cushley who also wrote the mag's rave of JfS last year. Funny thing: the Kim piece nestles next to a so-so review of King Crimson's new one...thought that would appeal to some people here. Feg-bands would do well to send their stuff into the Homebrew column, which covers self-produced stuff right down to the most grassy of grass-roots. The Mojo address is Mappin House, 4 Winsley St, London W1N 7AR. Mr Cushley might look on them favourably if you say you're a Robyn fan, it seems :-) jmbc. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 May 2000 11:43:43 -0400 From: "Thomas, Ferris" Subject: Stirring the Political Pot (was : Orwellian assault on the 4th) One of my libertarian-leaning friends sent me this. National Review Online 5/18/00 9:50 a.m. Fourth Amendment Sneak Attack Reno's outrageous Secret Searches measure. By Dave Kopel, of the Independence Institute The Reno Department of Justice is very good at being sneaky. The DOJ's lobbyists are on the verge of successfully sneaking into law a provision which will authorize federal agents to stealthily enter people's homes, search the homes, and not tell anyone. The Secret Searches measure is so outrageous that it would have no chance of being enacted as a bill on its own, when subjected to public scrutiny and debate. So instead, the DOJ has nestled the Secret Search item deep inside a long bill dealing with methamphetimines. The measure is further disguised with the innocuous title of "Notice Clarification." Subject to virtually no public discussion, the Secret Searches item has already passed the Senate, hidden inside the methamphetimine giant S. 486. Next week, the House Judiciary Committee will take up H.R. 2987, the House version of the Senate bill, which also contains the buried clause on Secret Searches (section 301). The federal bankruptcy reform bill (which has passed both houses, and is currently in a conference committee) likewise has the hidden Secret Searches language. If the Secret Searches provision became law, it would apply to all searches conducted by the federal government, not just searches involving methamphetimines or bankruptcy. When conducting searches, federal agents are currently required to announce their presence before entering, and to provide an inventory of any items they take. Because the person whose home or business is being searched knows about the search, he can exercise his Fourth Amendment rights, and make sure that the police have a properly-issued search warrant. He can also see if the search is being conducted according to the warrant's terms - i.e., the police are searching only for items authorized by the warrant, they are searching the right address, etc. But under a Secret Searches law, federal police could enter a person's home surreptitiously, conduct a search, and not tell the homeowner until months later. Even months later, the police would not have to provide an inventory of "intangible" items which were taken in a search. So if the police entered your home secretly, and photocopied your diary or made a copy of your computer hard disk, they would never have to inform you of their actions. Should the Secret Searches item be deleted from the methamphetimine and bankruptcy bills, it is likely that Clinton will try to sneak the item into a gigantic budget bill, during the Congressional Republicans' annual fall appropriations surrender. Take note: In a previous Congress, Clinton was able to obtain authority for warrantless wiretaps - which had been defeated after public debate earlier in the year - by hiding the authority in the year's omnibus budget bill. ______________________________________ Ferris Scott Thomas programmer McGraw-Hill Technology Division 195 Scott Swamp Road Farmington, CT 06032 860.409.2612 860.677.5405 (fax) ferris_thomas@mcgraw-hill.com (email) "We keep you alive to serve this ship, so row well... and live" - Ben Hur ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V9 #132 *******************************
