[lj lindhurst ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 22 May 2000 01:18:05 -0700 From: " Brian Hoare" Subject: Vyrna Knowl This is rather old and obscure but I'd be grateful if anyone can throw any light on it. Back in the early nineties I worked with a guy who had a spare time jazz fusion band which featured ex-Soft Boy turned divorce lawyer Alan Davies. I never met Alan and I understand that he is not too keen on remembering the "old times" but my workmate relayed the following info to me. The story is that the first ep originally featured Verna Knowl instead of Ventilator but was withdrawn due to complaints (legal action?) from Vyrna herself. It seems that Robyn had some kind ofrunning feud with a neighbour of this (presumably differently spelt) name. In Alan's story a number of copies of the ep were destroyed and the Ventilator version issued instead. Has anyone heard a simillar tale? Is the letter in the back of the Soft Boys collection from Vyrna? Has time messed with one the heads in the trail of this tale? The only other info I learnt through my workmate was that Alan hated the Soft Boys recordings and was shocked that they were reissued. I remember Robyn said that bit about his neighbor and the noise complaints in an interview somewhere. I'm not sure about the original release of the ep, but I'd sure love to hear some of that jazz fusion Mr. Davies was into. That'd be interesting! Robyn looks slightly odd in the photo, like a sort of handsome Tarantino. The whole thing is quite a nice souvenir. If anyone wants a photocopy of it give me a shout (unfortunately I haven't got scanning facilities). On the UM front: the album was recorded at *three* different studios - Alaska and James Morgan in London and Spaceward in Cambridge. jmbc ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 May 2000 11:02:31 -0400 From: "Thomas, Ferris" Subject: Genuinely humorous. Apparently one of the local TV stations moved their offices to the top floor of the building where our upstream internet provider is, and in the process of messing around with the wiring on the roof they found the connector for our microwave relay, and not knowing what it was, naturally they pulled the plug on it. As if I didn't need *yet another* reason to despise the modern media machine... So until they hire a new guy who will almost certainly do the exact same thing, we're back online at... http://www.alternatech.net/jh3/robyn/base ...and good luck to everyone who depends on technology to make a living.
