In the linear notes it credits Robyn, Kim, and Matthew as playing bass. Does any one know who plays bass on any or all of the songs? I'm fairly certain that Matthew plays on: Kingdom of Love, Positive Vibrations, Insanely Jealous, and Underwater Moonlight (and Black Snake Diamond Rock). I not so sure about the others. I know when Robyn's played Insanely Jealous with just Kim, he'll sometimes play bass. But when he does he never goes into the complex bass solo like on the album. So I don't think that's Robyn on the album, and that one sounds like Matthew anyway. I have a feeling Robyn is playing bass on Tonight, but I'm not certain. I got the hots: could be anyone. I wanna destroy you: Probably Kim or Robyn, You'll have to go sideways: Probably Kim or Robyn. Queen of eyes? It's hard to hear, but maybe Matthew. Anyone know for sure? Any professional opinons? Logical guesses? Thanks for the feedback in advance. Brian P.S. He's led his band the Bluesbreakers since the early 60's, and has seen some of the cream (sorry) of Britain's musicians pass through the ranks, including Mick Fleetwood, Peter Green, and John McVie (who were all with him together, and left to start Fleetwood Mac), Mick Taylor (who headed off to join the Stones), and Eric Clapton. He has a great ear for guitarists; besides those above, he's had others who went on to decent solo careers, most recently Coco Montoya. The song in the commercial is called "Let's Work Together", from his Island release "Sense of Place". You can get a sampling of his music in three two-disc sets (London Blues (1964-1969), Room to Move (1969-1974) and Drivin' On (The ABC Years 1975-82)). Personally, I'm planning on getting all of his albums eventually; while a couple miss the mark, by and large he's consistently excellent, and almost always does interesting things, both within the blues idiom and off in whatever direction his interests happen to lead him. I can highly recommend his albums Bluesbreakers (featuring Mr. Clapton), Through the Yaers (an assortment of tracks, featuring many of the great combinations of musicians he worked with in the 60's), Turning Point (a stripped-down, drummerless live release, with amazing interplay between the musicians, including Jon Mark on fingerstyle and slide guitar, and Johnny Almond doing some amazing flute and sax work), Jazz-Blues fusion (just what the title says), and Sense of Place. It's hard to know what to point you toward from his 90's material; his best-of set on Silvertone is very good, but if you listen to any of the above albums and decide he's for you, you might as well dive into the original releases, especially Blues for the Lost Years. Mayall's yet another of those too-little-known masters we're so keen on in these parts... Dave. Here's my 1/50th of a dollar: I kinda thought it was broken up based on the studios in which the songs were recoded. As I recall, UM was recorded in at least two studios, probably by virtue of the fact that Matthew came on late in the process as bassist and producer. Thus, matt probably played on the few tracks that were recorded later. I don't have the liner notes handy, so I can't be anymore specific than that now. Another possibility is that Robyn and/or Kim played bass on the basic tracks and Matthew simply provided overdubs and touch-ups. - -- Cheers! - -g- "The revolution will not be televised but it will have its own web site." - --Glen Uber, 25 April 2000 (apologies to Gil Scott-Heron) +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Glen Uber uberg@sonic.net http://www.sonic.net/~uberg ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 May 2000 12:37:02 -0700 From: Glen Uber Subject: Mill Valley On 17.05.00 19:42, sofa king wrote: > when we last left our heroes, Tom Clark exclaimed: > >> My plan was to drive up to SF, see the show, stay over, drive to Mill >> Valley for the Sweetwater show (if it happens), stay over. > > speaking of mill valley, i got a note from a web-feg who lives near by and > called up the sweetwater cafe. according to the drone who answered the > phone, a jefferson airplane cover band is playing there on the 22nd and > 23rd. no sign of robyn or grant -- unless, of course, jon brion has > convinced them to do a little culture-jamming. I work in Mill Valley and often stop into the Sweetwater for... *ahem* ..refreshments. As I understood the original e-mail Bayard sent, the correct date for Robyn's appearance is June 22, not May 22. May 22 is definitely already set with the real, honest-to-goodness Jefferson Airplane (minus Grace Slick and Marty Balin) scheduled to appear. I sent an e-mail to the booking contact at the Sweetwater about a week ago asking about June bookings in general and Robyn in particular, but have not received a response. The barmaid I talked to in person seemed clueless about everything other than the effect that wearing no bra in an air-conditioned room has on men purchasing drinks from her. But I digress... When and if I receive an e-mail or verbal confirmation of Robyn's and Grant Lee's appearance in MV, youfegs will be the first to know. - -- Cheers! - -g- "Porn will get you through times with no people better than people will get you through times with no porn." --apologies to the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Glen Uber uberg@sonic.net http://www.sonic.net/~uberg ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 May 2000 14:50:44 -0600 From: hbrandt Subject: # 9 brian nupp wrote: > P.S. It like them saying "Yeah, that's the end of the Soft Boys." And by the way I feel this is one of Robyn's more emotional songs. The vocals really have range and meaning. Any way my geek question is: Is the talking part on the 7 inch, or just on the cd? I know it's on both the Ryko disc and Glass Fish(?) cd's cause I have them. Thanks again.
