I'm not familiar with that one, but folks on another mailing list have recommended a similar service called Freewwweb. (Their URL is http://www.freewwweb.com, surprisingly enough.) It is honestly free, there are no hidden charges, and the service is as good as any typical ISP. It is adverstiser-supported, but subsribers say the ads aren't especially obstreperous. If you use a Mac (which I heartily recommend), don't worry: you may find that they only provide instructions for Windows users, but they do support Macs as well. As you probably have figured out, free ISPs are ad funded and pretty much all of them sell every piece of user information they get (including internal email lists) to anyone that will pay. bluelight.com in particular is run by Kmart (as the sight makes somewhat clear) and involves downloading the entire Kmart catalog to your system and flashing ads across everything you do for Kmart products here and there and weekly specials, etc. The issue here is that your bandwidth is hogged by this constant trickle of Kmart catalog data comin' down your little 3K pipe. HTH, I set my parents up with Freewwweb, and I can tell you what we've experienced. First, they do not require you to keep an ad banner on your screen at all times (most free isp's do this). All that they require is that you set your homepage to home.freewwweb.com so that everytime you log on, that's the first page you see. As it turns out, home.freewwweb.com is nothing more than Snap.com with the Freewwweb logo in the upper left-hand corner. No big deal - my folks used to have Yahoo! as their start page anyway. So, in that sense, it's a really good service. On the downside, the connection (at least around here) is jumpy. They get kicked off a lot, and sometimes during peak hours they can't get online. Also, the email BLOWS. 95% of the time the email server is on the fritz. If you go with Freewwweb, I highly recommend using mailandnews.com or some other POP3-enabled email service that is independant of Freewwweb. Overall, you get what you pay for. It's pretty decent, but when problems occur (and they're bound to), you really can't complain, cuz it's free. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 May 2000 15:58:51 -0700 From: Tom Clark Subject: Feglunch with Randi! Well, you can send them to me if you like. Nine is about the best I've heard so far. That quiz must've been tougher than I thought. I suspect that Eb would get most of them though, but I guess he doesn't try these sorts of things. And thanks to those who did email me to let me know it was worthwhile (if tough). Dreamt I heard a new Robyn song on the radio (with Grant Lee doing back-up vocals). It was medium-slow and sounded a bit like "Nietzche's Way"(sp?) crossed with any ol' generic Bob Dylan song. It was called "Bee's Wax" and one line in the chorus was "Leave your bee's wax at home," and the next line ended with "telephone," in which the "phone" part of the word is sung higher, drawn out, and more stridently. I remember telling Mark Gloster that I thought it was built around an E Major chord. And that's all there was to that dream. Bonus dream! ("oh, goodie," they all said). I was up in the woods somewhere and I needed a hex nut, so I went to a nearby hardware store. They were out of that particular hex nut (5/16", IIRC), so the store's owner had his son (who was a real live human version of Nelson from The Simpson's!!) bring some equipment back over to the road near where I was staying. He (Nelson) then began demonstrating for me how to squeeze some dough through a hexagonal metal hole (sort of like a pasta maker, I think). We were then going to bake a sheet of hex nuts from this (after slicing the individual hex nut cookies from the long strand of dough), when we got interrupted by a shirtless Uma Thurman, who was in a little cabin about ten feet away, talking to us through a window while her pet mountain lion circled around the room. She was flustered because the hex nuts weren't ready yet and she couldn't open the door to her place to leave until a new hex nut was put on the hinge. I've never really found Uma all that attractive, but now she's kinda wedged inside my brain.
