[snip] every decision I make is based on the personality with which I was born and the experiences I've had on this Earth. >> Leaning perilously close to actually subscribing to predestination, Walker has set up his thesis. << Although much of the environment around me is due to randomness, it may seem that we do have control over our wordly influences such as who my friends are or what value system I follow, but I contest that these decisions were based on our personality and the environment around us at that moment in time. >> Veering away from predestination, but towards the notion that we're all just leaves being blown by the wind. On the other hand, I don't know that I'd argue with the basic assessment of personality and environment being key influences on our decisions. It depends on how you define "perosnality," thought, I suppose. I might use a term more like "belief system," and say that this is combined with a lifetime's stored experiences. << We can trace this back to birth, meaning if we had no control over the environment we were born into and no control over the psyche we were born with, then anyone who had been born with my exact personality with the exact same experiences, would make exactly the same decisions I've made. As an individual I've had no control over the decisions I've made. >> Ehhhh . . . here, I think you've made a nifty little argument that only works because of a narrow set of parameters that you've set up. By using terms like "pysche" and "personality," the whole argument becomes kind of loose and difficlut to interpret or refute. But, I mean, I think I know what you're saying. But I don't agree! There have been an infinite number of little occurences that has led you to this point in your life, many of them quite small and random. Maybe your cat sat on the remote control one night and changed the channel on the TV, and then you saw a special on, I don't know, Pablo Picasso. And that got you to thinking about the nature of art. And then, the next day, someone happens to mention something about Cubism, and you get to thinking about geometry, and so on. I don't know where that leads to, but it could be a career change, or you could meet a significant other because of your cat changing the channel on the TV. But what I really believe is that everyone has free will. And most of us who have the time and resources to sit aorund talking about music on the internet probably also have some good ability to exercise this free will (as opposed to someone in an internment camp, for instance). You make thousands of little choices every day (and sometimes a big choice or two). And I think very few people are *born* with the kind of personality that dictates that they'll just take whatever kind of shit comes their way, because that's just what life has handed them. Many people learn this response to their environment, sure, but many people also *un*learn this response pattern. << These are the questions that keep me awake at night. >> I'm sure not just saying this, either. But I don't think it's a philiosophical quandary that keeps you awake; it's that you are personally experiencing this feeling that you're being pushed around by factors beyond your control. But I believe that what's really holing you back is the fear of doing things any differently than you're used to doing them, despite the fact that these old familiar ways don't yield the results you'd like to obtain. I'm not at all in the mood to beat around the bush today. Go see a therapist. Really. I don't know if there's anything "apparent" about confusion. Confusion is all about perception. And "cognitive mismanagement" seems a little glib. We're talking about deeply imbedded thought patterns that result in poor judgment and in a person engaging in bahaviors that are totally unproductive. Sorry, I'm in kind of a bad mood.
