A slice of nirvana indeed for a 16 or 17 year old die hard Hitchcock fan! I bought what I could afford, I think 5 tapes. 1 of them was this soft boys demo boot I can't seem to locate on anyones list. I think it starts of with underwater moonlight and then a skull a suitcase and a long red bottle of wine. these 2 songs are recorded live with vocals only in 1 channel and the instruments in the other. I wanna appreciate you is on there a few times and i think the jolly hangman is on there too. The recording level is so low there is a lot of hiss, and the quality isn't that good either. When I bought it it was on a cheap type I cassette. I was having problems with it so I surgically removed the tape from the casing and put it in a sony ux casing. this seemed to help. A few months ago I tried to minidisc the tape to better preserve the music, well the tape deck keeps stopping at certain points, I guess the tapes to tight. I rewound it and ff'd it hoping to loosen it up to no avail. it still stops and I'm scared the tape will break or get eaten up. Any suggestions? Does anyone have this demo session besides me? The band would like to sincerely thank their fans for all the support they have received over the years. They hope that this enthusiasm follows them into the new endeavors that they are exploring." The band formed in the Knitting Factory, New York City's legendary avant garde jazz venue, where singer M. Doughty was holding down doorman duties while working as a music critic. Doughty, who has described the band's sound as "deep slacker jazz," hooked up with fellow Knitting Factory scenesters, bassist Sebastian Steinberg, drummer Yuval Gabay and keyboardist Mark De Gil Antoni. The band's first record, Ruby Vroom, was released in 1994, followed by 1996's Irresistible Bliss, which produced the hit "Super Bon Bon." In 1998, the band released what would become its final album, El Oso, spawning the alt-radio hit, "Circles." Recently, band members have been increasingly involved in side projects. M. Doughty is at work on a solo album and recently penned a column for NYPress.com. De Gil Antoni worked with John Scofield on his new album, Bump, and begins a tour with Scofield on March 23 in Somerville, Mass. Hello just to follow-up Matt's note about the "Vaguely Sunny" CD: This is a compilation of Isle of Wight-related music, mostly island musicians and spanning the years 1966 to 1998. Included among the musical tracks are a handful of spoken contributions. The Robyn track is his spoken introduction to the first of his Isle of Wight outings, the "tribute to Jimi" gig at Yarmouth Station in 1995. It's a short track, just over 1 minute, and Robyn talks about how large numbers of festival-goers suddenly appeared on the island, and then equally suddenly disappeared, almost without trace. There are a couple of (small) photos of Robyn playing this gig in the CD booklet. If you were the guys sat on the wall behind Robyn and to his left, then you're in one of the photos! I don't know these groups. Steinbecks: they used to be the Sugargliders in the early 90s and still sound essentially the same, which is to say winsome and sad, a tiny bit like (pre-techno) Everything But The Girl. if you took them and made them self-pitying and pretentious, you might get Belle & Sebastian. Destroyer: sort of Elephant 6-y -- along the lines of retro instruments playing jaunty, bent pop, as opposed to the lines of psychedelic frippery. one or more of the guys from Zumpano now make up his backing band, giving them something more substantive to play. warning: knows literary theory and has a very un-cute nasal voice. second warning: the first album, We'll Build Them A Golden Bridge, is not even worth pulling out of a bargain bin unless you like amelodic tape monkeying. Vehicle Flips: a songwriter from Pennsylvania. seems to be heavily into nostalgia, as opposed to retro -- the goal being not to search the past for a context one can appropriate in order to feel like one belongs, but to look at the past as a source of insights that we are blinded to today. in his case, the insights seem to be mostly sad ones. Bright Eyes: as i may have said here, i'm sort of waiting for this band to pick up some buzz from Neutral Milk Hotel's coattails... they were playing wounded, twangy indiepop when NMH still sounded more like Apples In Stereo, but at least to me, making a record that sounds like it was mixed a little too high and everything is breaking up (while still playing in that style) says that the songwriter has heard "In the aeroplane..." to me. the imagery in Bright Eyes songs reads more like bad dreams than psychdelia to me, and has a personal punch i don't get from any of the E6 bands. i've also run across two different label samplers that i can sit and listen to all the way through, with maybe one or two uses of the skip button: Mr. Lady's New Women's Music Sampler (this is Kaia from Team Dresch's label, and between TD's two albums and her two folky solo albums, you can find the stylistic inspiration for most of the Mr. Lady bands) and the Teenbeat 2000 sampler. aaron ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Mar 2000 12:32:35 -0800 From: Mark_Gloster@3com.com Subject: Re: keegan alert I maybe he heard some of the terrible things some of us said (merely in jest.)
