She's been reclusive and a little down lately. She seems like she's kind of afraid to bring the rest of us down, so she's been staying away. For those who have joined us more recently, she's a long- time feg who is smart and sweet and really a wonderful person who happens to be wrestling with Crohn's disease- a very serious thing in her gutty-wuts. I think she's lonely and could use an email, a phone call, a letter, or at least one of those wacky e-cards from http://www.bluemountain.com for cheer or help or just to know she's not alone. It looks like she will be joining us on the west coast soon, to find out if we're all as tall, crabby, witty, average, beautiful, handsome, chatty, silly, short, efluvial, etc. as we appear in text form. Yes, I know, some of us appear to be made merely of consonants, but we try hard to keep the enamel on our teeth. So, here's the deal westcoasties: we need to make up an agenda so we can share her and show her that we aren't all a bunch of slackjawed yokels. I'm sure we can put together a fegparty complete with music, etc. here too. Also, she is planning doing a long tour and we can take turns hosting her. She wants to stay in the you- ess-of-a's as long as possible (3 months?), so before she gets her tix, it would be nice to establish a very general itinerary. I have offered to drive her to the land of the Portlish if she comes down this way. I will be glad to help with organizing the calendar. It would be great for me if at least part of her trip happened during May. Happies to all, - -Markg a.k.a. sharkboy ps. I liked Lambchop a lot, with the usual exception of Kurt Wagner's voice. Thirteen people onstage! And for one song, Yo La Tengo people joined in, making a total of *17*! I wish their set had been longer. I talked a little bit to Wagner, during Yo La Tengo's set. He was pleased to meet me, because I've interviewed him by phone twice. He doubly knows my name because one of the most "visible" Lambchop features on the Web is an old story of mine from three years ago. (I also bought two Lambchop seven-inches, at the concession stand. Yummy.) Yo La Tengo was a bit dull, as I feared. Since the new album is so drony and mellow, I expected the same from the show (and got it). However, it was interesting that the Clean's David Kilgour and Superchunk's Mac McCaughan were touring with the customary YLT trio, stretching it to a five-piece. Actually, the best part of their set was the encore -- they converted to a Clean cover band, put Kilgour on vocals and sang three old Clean songs. Tally ho! Then for the second encore, the stage was stuffed full of Lambchoppers, Yo La Tengoers, etc. and the whole gang stormed through the Ramones' "Sheena is a Punk Rocker." Heh! Then they did another barnburner cover, but I didn't recognize the song. It kinda sounded like the Sweet...? Maybe the chorus hook was screaming about a "Boston Breakout"?? Help? Starfucking: pretty poor. There was a chubby, monobrowed guy who was in "Wayne's World," plus the weird, caveman-looking dude who was in "Saving Private Ryan" and once played Joey's psycho roommate on "Friends." The only reason Jack Black and Kyle Gas (collectively known as Tenacious D) seemed so stupid on SNL was because they are NOT a network TV act. Their HBO show was one of the funniest things on TV and their live show is not to be missed. Y'know, I was just thinking, wouldn't it be cool if Oliver Platt were cast as Kurt Russell in "Second Only to the Beatles: The Barenaked Ladies Story"? They could get Vin Diesel to play Goldie Hawn!
