Anyone like to fill me in (oo-er) on what's been going on on the list while I've been away? I'm back now, after driving 5,600 km (plus or minus 1%) around NZ. If you've got an atlas handy (and who hasn't), I visited Christchurch, Nelson, wellington, Napier, Gisborne, East Cape, Rotorua,Taupo, Tauranga, the Coromandel, Auckland, Hamilton, New Plymouth, Wanganui, Ohakune, Palmerston North, Wellington (again), and Christchurch (again). I've been up the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere, watched steam escaping from fumaroles, seen landforms ranging from desert to mangrove swamp, and stood 6,000 feet up on the slopes of a volcano that erupted less than three years ago. In short, I now need a holiday. I've mentioned him a couple of times before on the list. George 'Bongo Joe' Coleman died in December. His only, self-titled, album is still available on Arhoolie Records (easy enough web-site). This is a must for any fans of fairly off-beam gear. He used to busk in the Gulf area, (based in Houston) playing his customised 44 gallon oil drum and whistling brilliantly. People who fancy Larry Fischer without the 'Zappa's pet freak' connotations will appreciate him: as will any lovers of outre blues. In 70s Britain he had quite a powerful champion in Alexis Korner who featured him regularly on his excellent radio show (Hello, Mike Godwin...) jmbc ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Feb 2000 00:35:27 +0000 (GMT) From: Michael Wolfe Subject: Two Questions: A listmember's apocalypse The first question is, has anyone else observed that, when playing DeChirico Street live lately, Robyn says the word "Andrew" a couple of bars into the song? Why do you suppose that is, and what do you think he's referencing? The ex- Egyptian's bassist? But why? The second question is, if any of y'all are going to be at the Largo in the next couple weeks, if someone could keep an eye out for Grant Lee Phillips' solo release, Ladies' Love Oracle, and pick me up a copy if you happen to see one, I would be very grateful. It's a new disk, and he's without distribution, so it's not all that easy to get. I would be happy to fully reimburse you monetarily, and to send a few copies of live shows (Robyn's and/or others') I've recorded if that is of interest to you. Let me know. Thanks, - -Michael ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V9 #35 ******************************
