I need to recall, for another poll. Here are some which I thought of: Captain Beefheart/two box sets Talking Heads/Stop Making Sense Ramones/Hey Ho anthology Pete Ham/Golders Green (surprisingly good, btw) Cocteau Twins/BBC Sessions The Birthday Party/Live 81-82 The Simpsons/Go Simpsonic Billy Bragg/Reaching to the Converted Meat Puppets/Rykodisc reissues Pere Ubu/Thirsty Ear reissues Robert Wyatt/Thirsty Ear reissues Anything else? And please emphasize reissues with a sense of "history," and not something like Merge reissuing three early Superchunk discs. BTW, another publication wanted my top *20* albums of 1999, so I had to fuss a bit more over #11-#20. Here's what I think I'm going to submit, unless that Sonic Youth album arrives soon and floors me. 11. The Olivia Tremor Control/Black Foliage: Animation Music (Flydaddy) 12. Richard Thompson/Mock Tudor (Capitol) 13. Pavement/Terror Twilight (Matador) 14. Robyn Hitchcock/Jewels for Sophia (Warner Bros.) 15. Chris Cornell/Euphoria Morning (A & M) 16. Jason Falkner/Can You Still Feel? (Elektra) 17. Fluid Ounces/In The New Old-Fashioned Way (Spongebath) 18. Moby/Play (V2) [looking more and more like The Album of 1999, the more lists I see...] 19. Nine Inch Nails/The Fragile (Nothing/Interscope) 20. The Hang Ups/Second Story (Clean/Restless) Actually, this list is noticeably more "Feggy" than my top 10, eh? (Nudged off at #21: Matthew Sweet.) I'm back on the list now. I've had a very busy past few weeks, but I won't bore you all with all the details. Basically, I'm now living in Manchaca, TX which is about 10 miles south of Austin. I've started looking for a job, but haven't found anything yet. I'm just excited to finally be living close enough with my band to play with them on a regular basis. Anyway, I was cruising through the archives, and I found this: > to stick with my brand new music buying philosophy > the "buy only cds that joel likes" philosophy), i > picked up of montreal's *the gay parade* a week > or so back. Shane, I'm not sure this is the best music buying philosophy. Hell, I bet I'm the only one here who loves Shaun Cassidy's Born Late. > my next move will be to re-purchase a jellyfish cd. > i had one earlier this decade and sold it, but if > joel likes them, they can't be bad! Well, that is true, but as I said before, it may not be the best philosophy. > anybody think i need to be under the influence of a > something when i listen to joel's picks? It's quite possible. Hope everyone's holidays were great. Mine were pretty good, though I did get sick. I got the new Quasi album for Christmas. I don't like it as much as the last one, but it's pretty good. I especially like "A Fable with No Moral." And today, I picked up My Morning Jacket's "The Tennessee Fire," which is very good (but I'm not telling Shane that he should buy it). If anyone wants to know what's in it, write to me and I'd be happy to send it out. (With any luck this may save me from "do you have"s). If it takes me a while to get back to anyone forgive me, but my life is currently disintegrating into chaos. And yes, 'Jet Set Flyer', 'Surfer Ghost', 'Plutonium Express', 'Greasy Quiff' and 'Demons & Fiends' _are_ real albums. And yes, they _are_ in there. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Jan 2000 22:42:35 -0500 From: shmac@ix.netcom.com (Scott Hunter McCleary) Subject: LP mailers (O% RH) Anyone know of a good source for sturdy LP mailers? I doubt that it's true and Amazon are just filling in a template based on the studio's other releases, but wouldn't it be fun if Robyn's done a French soundtrack? Or even funnier if someone else's voice is used for the dubbing? I think they even had *three*. I know >they released albums on both Pitch-A-Tent and Frontier.... Yup, I knew that. I've got all three of their albums. (Fact is, I mentioned Spot 1019 during my brainstorming draft of the post, and forgot to take them out for its final release.) Actually, they have *four* albums, if you count the cassette-only live recording they sold themselves a few years back, which I neglected to pick up. Anybody out there have a copy? Anyway, Spot 1019 is a band I miss quite a bit. Their line "Don't let Western civilization make a dipshit out of you" has a real good shot at ending up on my tombstone. Next to "Wish you were here", copped from Jim Thirlwell's line "The inscription on my tombstone says 'I wish you were here'". Did anybody else notice the guy wearing a Spot 1019 t-shirt in the comic book store sequence in the film _Crumb_? Too bad A Chud Convention only made one album, too, come to think of it. Any of you Skinny Puppy fans ever hear that one? I bought my copy from Woody "Dr. Death" Dumas, of C'est La Mort records, back in the day.
