Date: Tue, 23 Nov 1999 10:46:40 PST From: "Ghost Surfer" Subject: farewell GLR and hello Robyn There's a vicious rumour that Robyn will be playing the 100 club in London on wednesday 24th November at the Save GLR gig. Haven't heard for sure yet, but it might just happen. Listen to GLR to find out i guess. Robyn will be on the station from 2 & 6 pm on Saturday when the station broadcasts its last from their present home in Marylebone High St before they move off for a while. They will carry on broadcasting, but the BBC bosses look set to impose their "less music" policy on them. As this is the only station to play RH his profile in his home town will be significantly reduced. Shame. One track's called Michael Stipe and there's also a number called John Glenn (Mega Mix) on it. Digressing a little - if anyone has any up-to-date info about what the Buttholes are doing I'd very much appreciate a shout. Can't get any gen from the sites, official or unofficial. My favourite one-off LP artiste, though, is George 'Bongo Joe' Coleman - an eccentric (to say the least) blues busker who wouldn't have been out of place on a Zappa roster. His only release is still available on Arhoolie as far as I'm aware. The Travel Agency were quite an interesting psych band from San Fran who only released one album on Viva Records in 1968. They were produced by James Griffin who went on to help form Bread. They had a very tight melodic sound. Worth a listen. The band I was in only released one album. (Plus a six-track mini-jobbie). I think we fulfil one of the criteria in that I was obsessed with us. :-) . jmbc. Currently battling with the feeling that I don't particularly like Mule Variations or Midnite Vultures. Got both for Christmas so perhaps it's too early to tell. But the former sounds tired and the latter too knowing and derivative. Very disappointing from performers who both have entries in my (inchoate) top twenty of the decade. (I'm sure they both feel deeply honoured by their inclusion). ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Dec 1999 13:05:30 -0800 From: Eb Subject: Re: One hit LPs and albums >Talking of Crispin Glover, Johnny Depp played with Gibby 'Butthole Surfer' >Haynes' excellent one LP band, P. Well, the Buttholes' new album has been done for ages -- Capitol sent out advance copies *last year*. I didn't get one, but I know someone else who did. Then some sort of label shenanigans went on, and the release was grievously delayed. Quite recently, I read that the Buttholes are now signed to *Hollywood Records*...ugh. That can't be a good thing. Minus Fastball and Queen, Hollywood Records is a total void. And I haven't looked at it lately, but yeah, the Buttholes' official website has always been really thin on information. Unfortunately. Eb, who liked the P album more than many folks (in other words, I didn't trade it back), but sure wouldn't call it "excellent" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Dec 1999 18:22:01 -0500 From: "jbranscombe@compuserve.com" Subject: GLR, arseholes and surfers (Gibby where are you?) I don't know about the putative Robyn gig on GLR. But this afternoon there was a masterful programme on the station called, Someone Else's Song. The premise of this was to start out with a band/artiste doing a cover version which was then followed by the actual composer of that preceding number doing a cover version in turn, and so on. Thus REM's cover of Arms Of Love was followed by RH doing The Psychedelic Furs' Ghost In You, which was followed by Love Spit Love (Richard Butler's next band) doing a cover of How Soon Is Now etc. Very entertaining. Just a guess, but Ghost Surfer's disappearance might have something to do with GLR's recent upheavals. I'm sure he/she will be back. jmbc. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Dec 1999 22:34:49 -0500 From: fartachu Subject: storefront hitchcock fegs, amazon.com is now listing and taking pre-orders for the storefront hitchcock dvd with an expected release date of february 29, 2000. list price is $25.00 and the pre-order price is $15.00. those of you who prefer amazon to your local music emporium (wink to michael), point yer browsers to: i'm sure other on-line places are as well, but i haven't looked. woj n.p. wfmu on realaudio ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Dec 1999 23:30:00 -0500 (EST) From: Natalie Jacobs Subject: bye I'm off to Louisiana for the rest of the millenium. MAN this show is great! And a nigh-perfectly-mixed soundboard recording as well!
