On Thu, 23 Dec 1999, the high-pitched yet tiny voice of the gnat was heard: > >>(We > >>have a special alarm that goes off any time someone says a > >>band is "second only to the Beatles.") Actually, in the feglist poll-of-artists-not-including-Robyn, the Beatles scored second to XTC. There was a link to the poll results from woj's site, but this was three years ago and more. But the poll seems to support the assertion that: > I do believe you have said, in the past, that XTC is better than any other > band, ever. .. which would seem to indicate that, far from being a Hyperbole Crime, this belief is accepted feglist doctrine (or would be if we could ever agree on anything.) Again, I don't know if the poll was based on objective or subjective criteria, or both. Most likely subjective - seems like it would be dreadfully boring and clinical to talk about music objectively. Still, i suppose that's what music journalists do, isn't it? for the next poll, I suggest ranking XTC albums. Who wants to collect the votes offlist and tally them up? C'mon, it's Christmas vacation. =b ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Dec 1999 15:10:36 -0600 From: "JH3" Subject: Re: surrealism all over the world >Actually, in the feglist poll-of-artists-not-including-Robyn, the >Beatles scored second to XTC. C'mon, Bayard, admit it: This is just your "nice-guy" way of trying to get Steve and I to admit that we voted more than once, right? You can't fool ME with that stuff, buddy... >I do believe you have said, in the past, that XTC is better than >any other band, ever. This is a Hyperbole Crime of the first >degree... True, I've said that many times, but haven't I always prefaced it with an "IMO" or "I personally think" or something like that? If not, I apologize. I really do believe these things are (as Bayardo suggested) completely subjective, even if it might not always seem that way. (Except where Jimmy Buffett is involved, of course! There's no subjective way of rationalizing *his* existence that I know of.) Anyway, (I personally think that) Robyn Hitchcock is also better than the Beatles, so I guess it's just a matter of time before the Hyperbole Cops come a-knockin'. >...and you shall be punished by being forced to read bad reviews >of "Apple Venus" until you start to cry! There are such things? I've never seen one! I have to admit, though: AV1 might actually be my *least* favorite XTC album. I'm not sure if I can explain why that is, but the lack of guitars probably has something to do with it. I suppose the fact that it's still my favorite album of the year only shows the depths of depravity into which I've sunk. >But then we will let you have milk and cookies and sit in >the comfy chair till you feel better. :) Hmmm. I appreciate that (!), and I'm sure you mean well, but since I'm lactose-intolerant, that would probably be a lot worse than the bad reviews! Oh, and Mike G. writes: >Could I have some more details on Tintern Abbey? Is there a >Nick Lowe / Brinsleys connection, or am I confusing them with >Kippington Lodge? Don't know much about Tintern Abbey (sorry), but I'd say no and yes to the other part. If there were a Nick Lowe connection, I'd almost certainly know about it... in fact, I'd be hearing about it almost non-stop until I provided the wife with copies of everything they ever recorded. (An example of how bad it is: I actually know that Kippington Lodge grew out of an earlier outfit called "Sounds Plus Four." Lucky for me that *they* never released anything! Or *did* they...?) And Richard "just try pronouncing" Zeszotarski: >...Also for the semi-one LP's there's the Rezillos, Scottish new >wave/punk band that put out two albums. But wasn't the second one a live album? I'm pretty sure it was, and most of the tunes were from the first album... so they would probably count. "Can't Stand My Baby" was a gen-yoo-wine classic, especially if you're like me in thinking the object of the title was an actual *baby.* (I'm not saying that makes it a better song; just funnier. To me, at least.) John H. III PS. This has nuthin' to do with anything, but I just got a cool game in the mail. It's from my favorite game company, Cheapass Games (www.cheapass.com). It's called Escape From Elba, and I can't wait to play it. Here's the premise: You're Napoleon, and so is everyone else. In 1814 Napoleon was exiled to the island of Elba with nothing but 400 French troops, a pension, a fleet of ships, and a guy named Niall Campbell to keep him from leaving. Needless to say, he left. Now you and a bunch of Napoleons are back at Elba again. Or at least, that's what you think. And escaping won't be so easy this time. Merry Christmas, everybody. My least favorite album by any artist with at least 4 or 5 albums out would probably not make my top 5 for any given year, much less the #1 spot. But I'm not as fanatical as some people who's top 10 albums of all time are all by the same band/artist (I'm pretty sure I've encountered a few such people on ng's before). In fact, my least favorite albums by the likes of (even!) the Beatles, Robyn, Marillion, and The The would probably be ranked around #372 or 753 or thereabouts on my all-time Top Infinity-and-Beyond list. - ------Michael K. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Dec 1999 18:49:45 -0600 From: steve Subject: Re: praise the lord; rock is dead hal brandt: >"If you find yourself laughing at this story, think about this: where >will YOU spend eternity?
