Cornershop, When I Was Born for the 7th Time I'll second or third the recommendation for the Lucinda Williams album. Almost a perfect record, I think. My first (albeit very late) exposure to Lucinda was from some live music show from '98...half hour of Vic Chesnutt & Lambchop / half hour of Lucinda. She's one of those artists that is routinely praised by other artists, but doesn't get THAT much exposure in the mainstream. Anyway, if you like very simple, traditional "american" sorta songwriting...nothing flashy or experimental or anything, Lucinda's great. She's a really good lyricist...very effective at using a minimum of words to convey very pure feelings and stuff. I almost want to say a female Vic Chesnutt sorta, but I don't think that quite cuts it. One thing I really like about Lucinda is that she sings in this very casual way that's very warm and to-the-point...no theatrics or Mariah Carey show-off stuff. Anyway, try it. And yeah, I thought the Cornershop album was really good too. I haven't heard any of their earlier stuff. There's a lot of styles on this album, from club dance stuff to attempts at almost pure country, and pretty much all of it works. Anyway, there's my sorta non-commital blunderings at record reviews. I talked to him briefly about the vagaries of double reeds, as I used to play the bassoon. I quit when I learned how difficult it is to make your own reeds, and you pretty much have to make your own to get a decent sound out of the instrument. Joel ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Dec 1999 18:33:22 -0500 (EST) From: Natalie Jacobs Subject: The Pilgrim's Quest (pt. 2) When last we left our hero, he and his companion the gnome, while on the quest for the Aleph Tape which lies in the Shrine of woj, had just fallen through a mysterious hole in the desert floor... "Hey, are you all right?" The Pilgrim opened his eyes. He was lying on the floor of a dimly-lit cave, and an Elvis Costello greatest hits album was playing off in the distance. "Where am I?" he mumbled. "You're in the Vestibule," said the same woman's voice which had awakened him. "You fell through the skylight. You need to be more careful where you step!" "Oh... fuck. My head hurts." The Pilgrim got up, and then screamed, because the person who was talking to him was, in fact, an enormous lion! He looked around desperately for someplace to run, but the cave was tiny, and there was only one exit, which the lion was sitting in front of. "Oh, relax," said the lion. "I'm Vivien the Lyoness, and I'm the Guardian of the Threshold. You're safe with me. Watch out for the little guy!" The Pilgrim was just about to step on the gnome, who dodged just in time. "Hey!" the gnome yelped. "She told you to be more careful!" The Pilgrim picked him up and put him back on his shoulder. "You're looking for the Aleph Tape, aren't you?" said the Lyoness. The Pilgrim nodded. "Well, you'll have to pass the Guardians of the Three Hitchcock gates first. When you've defeated all of them, you will have reached - oh, hang on, 'Beyond Belief' is playing." The Pilgrim waited impatiently while the Lyoness listened to the song. When it was over, she continued, "When you pass through the gates, you will reach the maze of tunnels that leads to the Shring of woj. It's impossible for anyone to pass through the maze unassisted, so you'll have to call on the priestess of your persuasion for help. The gnome can help you with that." "The priestess of my persuasion?" the Pilgrim muttered. "Uh-huh. So when she guides you through the maze, then you will face the final and most frightening Guardian of them all, who guards the Aleph Tape within the Shrine itself. I can't tell you anything about him, because no-one has ever faced him and lived. But you're pretty smart, I think you'll be OK. Now, it's time for you to be on your way." The Lyoness moved aside from the exit to let the Pilgrim pass through. As he left, she called after him, "Oh, and if you see a monkey wandering around, tell him to take out the trash!" He found himself in a long tunnel, which soon opened up into another cave, this one hung about with medieval tapestries. At the far end of the cave was a huge bronze gate covered with scenes from various Robyn songs in bas relief: there was Brenda and her iron sledge, something in a plastic bag, a man and his wife and his dead wife, and so on. But it was the cave itself that caught the Pilgrim's eye: it was filled with snoring men in rusting armor, each one wearing a jewelled crucifix around his neck. "Ye Sleeping Knights of Jesus!" the Pilgrim breathed in awe. "I think you should keep your voice down," the gnome whispered. "I think these guys might be cranky if you wake them up." The Pilgrim began to tiptoe among the Knights. They were lying very close together, and it was extremely difficult to keep from stepping on them. He was almost at the gate when he tripped over an outstretched arm and fell with an enormous clatter on top of the biggest, meanest-looking Knight of them all. The Knight blinked, his eyes reddened and surrounded by dark circles, and then noticed the Pilgrim. "By Our Lady!" the Knight bellowed in a sudden rage. "How dare you wake me from my slumber??" "It was a mistake, sir!" the Pilgrim whimpered. But the Knight was having none of it. He leaped to his feet and pulled out his sword. All around them, the other Knights were beginning to stir, complaining about the bright light and wondering if anyone had made coffee. "Fuck!" the Pilgrim wailed, and made a dash for the gate, the gnome holding on for dear life. They made it through just as the Knight's sword came whizzing down where the Pilgrim's head had previously been. Beyond the gate was another tunnel, which led into a cave whose walls and ceiling glittered with thousands of brilliant crystals. Upon a raised dais in the middle of the cave sat a woman wearing a crown of lights that blinked on and off hypnotically. She appeared to have a turtle shell on her back, and she wore a fetching pair of black lace stockings as well as a hideous robe of eyeballs stitched together - a sickening sight, and the Pilgrim could hardly bear to look at her, though she was very comely. Beyond her was another gate like the first, this one of solid silver. "I am the Queen of Eyes, Guardian of the Second Hitchcock Gate," said the woman. "You must answer my three questions, or be locked in orbit around me forever." "Uh, OK," said the Pilgrim. "My first question: Who was the first queen of England?" "Um..." The Pilgrim tried desperately to remember his history classes, but he had spent most of them sitting in the back reading Howard Zinn, and his mind was a blank. "Fuck," he muttered. "Do you know the answer, gnome?" "No," said the gnome. "I wish she'd ask a question about Anne Frank. I know all about Anne Frank!" "Oh! It's Queen Mary! Bloody Mary! That's it!" "Damn," said the Queen of Eyes. "OK, here's the second question. What is vitreous humor?" "It's that gunky stuff in your eyes," the Pilgrim replied confidently. "Oh, shit. All right, here's the third and final question..." The Queen of Eyes smiled deviously. "You'll never get this one." She stood up and pointed her eyeball-studded sceptre at the Pilgrim. "Tell me, Pilgrim... is it Mucky the pig or Bucky the pig?" "MUCKY!" the Pilgrim shouted, and as the Queen's face turned dark with wrath, and electricity played around her blinking crown, the Pilgrim beat another hasty retreat. The final cave was pitch black. The Pilgrim, hoping against hope that the third Guardian was out to lunch, made his way through the darkness, feeling the gnome trembling on his shoulder perch. Gleaming ahead of them through the murk was the third gate, which was made of purest gold. Suddenly, an incredibly bright light blinked on in a corner of the cave. The Pilgrim paused, and at that moment a huge man in a three-piece suit, his head a massive blaze of radiance, rose up from his slumber and lumbered towards the terrified Pilgrim and the equally frightened gnome. "Fuck!" the Pilgrim screamed. "It's the Man with the Lightbulb Head! Avert your eyes from his gaze, gnome, and we may yet be saved!" "I knew you were going to say that!" the gnome wailed as the Pilgrim began to run. "I've come to turn you on!" the Man shouted in a gurgly voice, lunging at the Pilgrim with one giant hand. The Pilgrim dodged. The light from the Man's bulb was blinding. I wonder what wattage he uses? the Pilgrim thought. He was just beginning to think that he was doomed when there was a loud "snap," a flash, and the Man's lightbulb went out. "Goddamn it," he heard the Man mutter. "I knew I should have gotten one of those halogen bulbs..." Then came a squeaky sound of the bulb being unscrewed. Several dozen lightbulb jokes flashed through the Pilgrim's mind, but he refrained from telling any of them, and took advantage of the darkness to make his escape. There was no ordinary tunnel beyond the third gate. Instead, there were three tunnels, each of which branched off into three more tunnels. "This must be the maze the Lyoness was telling us about," said the Pilgrim. "And we're supposed to ask for help," said the gnome. "But how?" "Fuck," grumbled the Pilgrim.
