Well, it's 1:00AM, and Darcie and I leave for San Francisco from George Bush International Airport at 7:00AM. I still haven't heard anything definite (or anything tentative, for that matter) about the location of any get-togethers before the Troubadour show. If anyone does manage to arrange something, try getting ahold of one of us. Jeme and Viv will will be riding with us, and Jeme posted his pager number a few messages back. I'll be checking into the Best Western Hollywood Hills (523-464-5181), hopefully by early afternoon. The room'll be in my name, so any California fegs "in the know" about what's going on could call and leave a message there -- that would be terrific. I'm psyched. Loud! In the crowd: Kevin MacDonald (Kids in the Hall) and Mike Myers. Like Luna two nights before, Matthew Sweet was scheduled to go on at 10:15...the Troubadour seems to stick pretty solidly to the "opening band at 9, headliner at 10:15" plan. Let's hope for a lyric sheet with "Bram" (out 31 Jan!). It went back and forth. I think he's getting three things across here: The philosopher's stone: mythical element that does neat shit. The philosopher's stone: This fellow who contemplates and reasons is made of granite. The philosopher's stoned: This fellow who contemplates and reasons is somewhat chemically overwrought. So that's that. New facts: 1) Elektra tells me Stereolab goes out at *9*, a bit later than I hoped. 2) In the L.A. Weekly's Troubadour ad, there's a big balloon on the Robyn listing saying that "Doors open at 9 pm," as if the show starts later than usual -- none of the other shows list door times. So...hmm. Departure Lounge at 9:30 then? Robyn at 10:30? 9:45 and 10:45? Dunno. However, if the above means that I'm forced to miss half of Robyn's set (not to mention all of Departure Lounge's), I'm a bit reluctant to plunk the money down for a ticket. And if the show's going to sell out, getting there so late won't be good (and yes, Matthew Sweet was a sell-out, to give you a hint). BTW: Last night, I asked the Troubadour femme if it's possible to buy tickets at the box office in advance. She said the only way to do it was by *fax*, and with a surcharge. So clearly, Jeme's "Go to Hitchcock, and buy a ticket for Stereolab the next night" plan won't work. FYI, here is the L.A. Weekly's preview written for the Robyn show: "A prophet without honor in his homeland, surreally inclined English songwriter Robyn Hitchcock has, during the past 15 years, settled comfortably into cult status in the United States. Perhaps a trifle *too* comfortably -- his last two new albums, 1996's Moss Elixir and this year's Jewels for Sophia have been disappointingly spotty additions to the Hitchcock canon, barely scraping the hem of classics like 1985's Fegmania or even 1991's Perspex Island, his last brush with commercial success. Still, his unpredictable live appearances continue to be completely captivating, and the addition of Kimberley Rew to Hitchcock's latest touring ensemble (which also includes members of openers the Departure Lounge) is cause for celebration. Hitchcock's and Rew's guitars previously dueted in a death-defying snake dance over the course of three great Soft Boys albums, and it should be pretty interesting to hear how Rew's presence affects or transforms Hitchcock's solo compositions. Of course, getting to hear a couple of cuts from Underwater Moonlight wouldn't be too terrible, either. (Dan Epstein)" I kinda know the guy who wrote this, if you're curious who dared to tread on JfS (ha). He's very much part of L.A.'s retro-pop clique...he even plays in a band with Michael Quercio (ex-Three O'Clock, ex-Permanent Green Light). He also used to be the editor of BAM magazine, until its landmark dissolution a few months ago. Thanks much. Sorry to drop the ball on this little detail. Also, Kimberley used an e-bow on Cheese Alarm, and the best Kim moment of the night was when he did the (strummed) solo for Cheese Alarm. He had to do something with the e-bow, so he stuck it in his mouth. So there he was, strumming away furiously, head bobbing, Rew-sian grimaces on his face, with an e-bow in his mouth. I kinda like these people! Also, I have a "surge-oriented" job in web development which gives me whole *days* in front of the computer with nothing better to do than debate things like Momus and current films! (I imagine a collective cheer is going up from the crowd about now.) I'm shamefully new to the world of Hitchcock fandom... my first exposure (other than someone playing the Yip Song for me once and me thinking it was kind of annoying) was a Largo performance sometime in 1998, which I was suitably blown away by. I've seen him many times since, and made a small dent in catching up on his recordings (OK, I only have four. It's pitiful!). So I probably won't be impressing you with any expert-level insight (of the on-topic nature, at least) right off the bat, sorry to say. However, I do make a brief uncredited appearance on "Jewels for Sophia" as the only person who laughs at the line "I'll get a dog named Laszlo from the Laszlo shop." I can't tell you how proud I am of that achievement. Really. I can't.
