I have a feeling Momus thinks so too, since live he has a history of performing a lot of songs from this record ("Complete History of Sexual Jealousy" and "The Homosexual" are live show staples) and hardly ever performs anything from TPB. "Philosophy" is a different kind of record. It's a lot more about sound and texture. I've been warming to it a bit, but I still would have liked more "Slide Projector, Lie Detector" and less "Yokohama Chinatown". I would come over for the weekend and do it (yep, I'm that stupid) but the wife and I are already probably going to visit her folks in Shropshire either on Thanksgiving or Christmas--both of which, as you know, fall nowhere near the 4th of December. The show is on Saturday, 4th December, at the Notting Hill Arts Club (19 Notting Hill Gate) and the set I'm interested in hearing falls at some point between 4pm and 7pm, though I have no way of knowing when. It is less good for more-compressed files, but there are many options... try download.com. Stewart told me about another program that is supposed to be great, but i forget which. I think it needed to be compiled and i couldn't be bothered. Those that cost money (bladenc is a $1 optional shareware fee) are probably based on the Xing engine. But Hitchcock is already talking about his next release -- titled Stars for Bram -- as in Stoker. The new record is due out on Hitchcock's own label in January and is comprised of outtakes of songs from the Sophia sessions. "It has 12 different recordings on it," says Hitchcock, 46, who recorded the Bram and Sophia songs with different collections of musicians in Seattle, Los Angeles, and London. "There's two songs that have been out before -- a rock version of '1974' that was on the Jonathan Demme [film] project [Storefront Hitchcock] and a dub version of Antwoman, which is on Jewels for Sophia. Otherwise, it's completely different." Hitchcock will sell the Bram disc through his Web site (www.robynhitchcock.com), which is one of an assortment of projects keeping him busy these days. He's promoting Sophia with his first tour with a full band in several years, including former Soft Boys bandmate Kimberly Rew (a founder of Katrina and the Waves) on guitar and a repertoire that he says is "the first time I've done a complete retrospective of my stuff. I've sort of established myself in the last five years as a completely solo entertainer. I know I can do it for an hour by myself and entertain people. I don't feel like there's the unspoken proviso of 'Of course he's with a band, really. This is just him being wacky on his own, but he really makes more sense with a band.' I think I've disproved that. So now I can completely reverse the process." Hitchcock is also working trying to get MGM, which now owns the Demme-directed Storefront Hitchcock concert film to release it on home video, but he says the studio seems "very uninterested." Nevertheless, he's hoping to find a TV outlet for it as well. But while he talks about releasing some other collections via the Internet, Hitchcock's main project in the new year will be finishing an as-yet-untitled novel, which he says "is about someone whose past has basically changed while their life is happening -- which has made it particularly awkward to write. "I want to be done next year," he adds. "Before the leaves fall from the trees, I would like to have an absolute finished version and some kind of deal in the whatever deals are in, the works or the pipeline or the bank or something. I definitely aim to have that out before I put out any further albums." -- Gary Graff ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Nov 1999 17:11:15 -0500 (EST) From: Bayard Subject: KimberlEy (Re: Good writeup at www.mrshowbiz.com) thanks, Gene!!! I do know that some CDs are coming out with that enhanced CD format where there's a data portion and music portion and the data portion is blank. And that stimeys some very bad CD-ROM players, but will effect nobody eventually. Here's the key that they will never get: No matter what they do to the data, it is still data. OK, I know people have been putting lots and lots of concert details on the list, so I'm sure someone with a better memory (or who actually recorded the whole show- I only got about half of it for some reason) will write up last night's minutae... I just wanted to voice a few quick opinions... Departure Lounge sounded great, if a little quiet. Would've bought their new cd but it sold out 2 people ahead of me in line. Oh well... Will somebody please tell Robyn that "America" sounds *much* cooler when he plays the chorus chords in the order of the original recording? Starting on Gm to Ab to Bb is, to me anyway, a lot more sinister and groovy than the reverse, which is how I've always heard him play it live. I can see how the Soft Boys would've been an eardrum burster of a band. Somewhat unfortunately, we were on the side of the stage next to Kimberly's amp, and boy was he overpowering. And truly Muppetesque, you're all correct... also, I have to laugh at guitarists who grimace and shake whenever they play *anything*, as if it's the most mind-bending riff in history. Chill, baby, chill... And finally, there was a little too much free-form-guitar-heroics-jamming for my taste, especially with Robyn's tendency to wander about, time-wise... I sometimes felt like what it might be like to see a Phish concert, which I would never voluntarily do... All in all, though, a fab show.
