I use (and recommend) a piece of software from Steinberg (one of the leading makers of professional audio recording and sequencing programs - Cubase - used in studios all over the world), called "Clean!". It is based on the noise reduction and EQ algorithms from their high-end plugin packages, but with a simplified user interface and a ridiculously low (for what you get) price tag. I think I paid $99 US. You'll need a decent turntable, of course, and a passable pre-amp (mainly for the phono equalization). Then feed the pre-amp output straight into your sound card (almost any recent card will do - sound card technology has come a long way in the last couple of years). You record and process with Clean!, and then the software allows you to order the tracks, fade in/out, add spaces and finally burn the CD. Heck, it even comes with software to produce labels, booklets and inlay cards!! You can read all about it here: http://www.steinberg.net/products/clean.html I guess the purists could claim that the simple user interface takes away some of the flexibility - on the other hand it drastically reduces the chance you'll screw it up! (Steinberg's denoiser and declicker plugins (on which this is based) cost over $300 *each*, by the way.) I guess those florescent green Michelle shirts ain't selling so well... Now, a shameless plug... Kool Beanz is putting together a various artists CD (19 tracks), hopefully in time for Christmas. Mostly Florida "folk" artists. My wife Dianne has two tracks, one being the title track "Home Away From Home". I was lucky enough to secure a track myself, a song of mine called "East Coast Setting Sun". I was actually surprised it got picked, as it was my worst take of the evening I thought (all tracks were recorded live). Anyway, my song actually namechecks Robyn, NMH, and Julian, just in case anyone is remotely interested. I think Bayard has a 4-track demo of the song on a tape somewhere. Pre-order price is $10...$15 once it comes out. Some of you out there might just be receiving a little present in the mail at Christmas. They just sort of assumed that people were only there to see their girl. The people standing in front of me were of this ilk, they were -very- loud, in their like, dislike, of this like, really, like, uncool guy. I muttered something just loud enough along the lines of "fucking idiots.....go back to the suburbs.....strangle". This seemed to work. This is all kinda funny to me, because....does anyone else watch "Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends"? Basically the concept is, a journalist named Louis Theroux spends a few days immersing himself in various, er, "weird" cultures, and takes a camera with. In the wrestling one, a couple of the guys he talked to did say "this is a soap opera for men". Interestingly, these were guys on the lower rungs, so to speak of the wrestling circuit- guys who do their own homegrown, hometown versions of WWF. The people he talked to at the actual WWF were -extremely- hostile to any suggestion of the sort, tho their actions kind of belied their words. They were hostile to the notion that there was acting going on and that, but they also spent quite a bit of time trying to teach him stuff that looked a lot like choreography to this viewer. Love on ya, Susan ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Nov 1999 17:13:28 -0500 (EST) From: Natalie Jacobs Subject: Adventures in Ohio I drove down to Bowling Green to see the Minders last night. The show wasn't quite as good as the one in Portland, but I figure they're road weary by now. Still, much rocking took place. I spent much of the evening talking to band members about various things, including the taste of Portland tap water vs. Midwestern tap water, and the hazards of hitting a vulture with your car. But the main subject of discussion was XTC. I asked Martyn Leaper what he thought of Apple Venus, which prompted a disgusted snarl: "That 'F-U-C-K' song - come on, what is that??" He admitted he would have to go back and listen to the orchestral songs again, though. Oh, and like all superior beings, Martyn really likes "The Big Express." (Are you listening, woj?) By the way, Martyn has to be one of the biggest chatterboxes I've ever met. He was literally telling me his life story at one point, while I did the "smile-and-nod" bit. At another point, I asked him a simple question re. drawing and his left-handedness, and got ten minutes worth of unsolicited (though interesting) drawing advice. But he was super nice, as were the other band members - Martyn and Rebecca the drummer even hugged me before I went home. (Awww.) It just goes to show you, E6 bands are almost as nice as Fegs! I drove home at 90 mph, compressing a 90-minute trip into 40 minutes, but I still didn't get home till 3:00 am. I'm very, very tired. n. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Nov 1999 14:18:33 -0800 From: Eb Subject: event of the year, for you New Yorkers THE SHAGGS?!?!?!?!??!?!?!??!?!??!?!?!??
