I can see your point about calling it rematsering, since Aaron obviously doesn't possess the masters to begin with. I guess he's maybe *mastering* it to CD, in a way that's very comparable to what someone would do if s/he were taking some old 78's or metal discs or stone etchings (or whatever) of 1928 blues recordings (as is often the case, this is all they can find for this material) and using a bunch of filters and de-poppers and de-hissers and EQs and stuff and then preparing a master version of this recording so Yazoo or Document could issue it as a CD. I consider this to be a *lot* more than recording, which I tend to see as little more than pushing the RECORD button (okay, and maybe adjusting the input level on each track of a mix tape, if you're anal like me :-)). So, the truth lies somewhere in between, in my eyes (which are prone to seeking out all shapes and shades of gray areas). - ------Michael K. np - Andrea Parker: "Kiss My Arp" -- good mildly trip-hoppy electronica with cool occasional vocals from Ms. Parker herself -- reinforces for me just how much Mz. Anyway, I like _To Venus and Back_, but lots of it isn't hitting me the same as some of her older stuff. It's an album with _songs_ I like, rather than an _album_ I like, if that makes sense. However, I am completely entranced with "Spring Haze." I think it's one of the most brilliant things she's ever done. "Josephine" is another favorite, perhaps because it makes me think of Jeanette Winterson's _The Passion_. I like "80s," but for different reasons than I generally like Tori songs. I'm excited about seeing Robyn in Ferndale! I keep having dreams that I accidentally missed it. That really bugs me. Yup, I was witness to our beloved muppet-boy in his pre-muppet days ...in fact, in his pre Soft Boys days, even. Kimberley lead the leading band in Cambridge back in the late 70's ...until Robyn came on the scene. As the Soft Boys' star rose, Kimberleys' band slipped further down the bill. "The Waves" became "The Hamburger Waves" (with Chris Hamburger) and finally Kimmey did the smart thing and joined the winning team. You'd think that seeing the ... er ... "Rock Armada" for three consecutive shows in Austin would have sated me, for now, but... I just can't let this tour pass without seeing Robyn, Kimberley, Tim, and co. again. I'm hoping that by seeing the first 3 and then the last 2 shows of the tour, I'll be treated with a significantly different setlist, but I'll be happy, nonetheless. My plans so far: I'm flying from here in Houston to San Francisco on the 19th. I was hoping to find a generous BayArea Feg who'd be willing to pick me up from the airport that afternoon/evening, and allow me to accompany them to the show at the GAMH. I guess I'll find a hotel at which to crash that night, and Eddie "C.F.O.N." Tews has generously offered to let me ride with Chris, Jason, and him from S.F. to Los Angeles the next morning. After the show, Eddie again offered to drop me off at the L.A. airport, where I'll probably sleep for 2-3 hours before catching an early-morning flight back to Texas. I'd really, really, really appreciate it if there was someone out there willing to pick me up from the airport, etc., on the 19th in S.F. I'm spending more money than I can probably really afford, anyway, just for the round-trip flight from Texas to California, so I want to try and avoid the extra expense of car rental if at all possible. Pop albums which rise and fall on the strength of their hooks often require a couple of listens to absorb, and this holds true for In Reverse (cleverly packaged with upside-down/backwards inserts). I don't feel like my opinion of the disc has gelled yet, after one and a half listens. Basically, it's good news and bad news. Good news: It's a strong rebound, coming off the hunk o' doody that was Blue Sky on Mars (quite possibly my nomination for the most disappointing album of the decade). Bad news: It's still nowhere near on the level of the Girlfriend/Altered Beast/100% Fun trilogy. The guest stars are back: Greg Leisz (boy, I'd love to see a list of records this busy beaver has played on in the past five years...whew), the Fowler Brothers, Ric Menck/Paul Chastain (the Velvet Crush), Brian Kehew (the Moog Cookbook), Carol Kaye (rumored to have played bass on every pop album of the '60s), Fred Maher, Jim Keltner. No Richard Lloyd or Robert Quine, however. Unfortunately. None of the above players have a "signature sound" in the way Lloyd and Quine do, so they feel like hired hands more than equal contributors. The arrangements are quite elaborate at times -- four tracks include well over a dozen musicians! Thankfully, In Reverse feels like a "real" album, and not a half-assed batch of outtakes like Blue Sky on Mars. Yet the lyrics are fairly generic, and that's a shame. The main reason why Sweet's past records stood apart from other nostalgic guitar-pop acts was that he always managed to put a personal stamp on the material. Given these ordinary "girl" lyrics and less distinctive arrangements, this one feels more like a genre piece (though at least it sounds contemporary). Really, the only track with an individual viewpoint is "Write Your Own Song," which is an attack on either music critics or meddling label executives ("Why don't you write your own song/If mine doesn't do it for you/You might get it all wrong/Or you might create the hit/You wish that I would write for you"). I guess Sweet isn't too pleased with his tumble in stature, following Blue Sky on Mars. I'm a bit reluctant to comment on individual tracks, currently. The upbeat songs kinda bleed together for me, so far. They also literally segue into each other, which only adds to this perception. The two which really grabbed me on first listen were "Hide" and "Worse to Live," which are in more of a ballad mode. "Hide" mines the John Lennon vein, with plodding piano chords and Leisz's pedal-steel substituting for Lennon's violins. Beautiful. And ditto for "Worse to Live," which has a majestic sweep similar to "Not When I Need It" off 100% Fun. This one really wrecks me -- gorgeous, gorgeous. The last track "Thunderstorm" is also worth mentioning. It's not particularly good, but it's an interesting experiment: a 10-minute suite of sharply contrasting musical moods. Unfocused, but certainly ambitious. One sizeable section (check between the three- and five-minute marks) reminds me of the Partridges' "I Think I Love You" at half-speed. Heh heh. I'm not particularly fond of the production -- it's well-known around these parts how I favor "dry" vocals, and Sweet is double-tracked and reverbed more than I'd like. Also, the drums can be oppressive. I think Sweet was aiming for a Phil Spector vibe on a few tracks, but Menck's garage-pop drum style just isn't well-adapted for this approach. And as I said before, the density of the arrangements sometimes obscures the merits of individual players. Anyway, these are my initial thoughts. On the whole, I don't think it's quite as good as Jewels for Sophia. I'd rank it in the 13/20 range of the Ebscale(tm), on the level of recent releases by Jason Falkner, the Hang Ups, Superchunk, Moby and, yes, the Velvet Crush.
