These shows are going to be legendary, aren't they? I mean, as legendary as something like this can be given a community the size of Robyn fans. Legendary in the sense that Eddie and Bayard's eyes will glaze over when they talk about "The great Robyn/Rew gigs of Autumn 1999," at least. A few comments: 1. I retract my previous disparaging comments about Departure Lounge. Maybe they played better than they did in Philly; maybe I was just more receptive; but they were wonderful. Such an interesting sound . . . reminded me of Luna or the mellower Velvets, but not at all in a copycat kind of way -- they were there own band. The audience was completely open to them, cheering every song so much that Tim Keegan seemed happily surprised; in fact, the whole band were cheerful and glowing the rest of the night. And that song based on a nursery rhyme, with the singing/speaking exchanges . . . wow. 2. I still miss Andy Metcalfe; but my opinion of Lindsey the drummer soared through the roof -- Eddie is right, this guy is great! Very creative, personable, and meshes perfectly with Robyn and the rest of the, um, Rock Armada. Tim Keegan, too, continues to impress me more and more, and his voice . . . is it my imagination or is he getting increasingly -- and eerily -- more Robyn-like? 3. Kimberly, while still magnificent, was overall more subdued this outing. Which is not to say that he didn't rip the hell out of Insanely Jealous, take IODoT and Birds in Perspex to a new level, and still look frightfully like a muppet. 4. Robyn was in great spirits and played the best I've ever seen him play. His solos had a different feel, more daring and inventive than usual, and he pulled them off brilliantly. He seemed truly happy. 5. I have never seen a Robyn crowd like I have last night. Screaming girls, knots of yuppie-types that laughed their heads off at every offbeat thing he said, a pair of tattoo-covered Latinos gay fellows in leather vests who knew *all* the lyrics . . . . I began to get this weird, uneasy Philip K. Dickian suspicion that there is some *other* Feg List somewhere. . . . 6. The songs -- !!! "Swirling," "Autumn is Your Last Chance," "I Often Dream of Trains," "Insanely Jeaolous!" Wheee! There was also a new song that I liked and Woj didn't, an atypically straight-ahead number about pretending to be someone's friend. I thought it was pretty biting, and therefore made up for lack of poetry or typical Robynesque symbolism. 7. Why oh why have I *never* seen Robyn play "Ghost Ship?" Is this Dave Lang's fault? I'm sure it is. Pesky Dave ("not corin") Lang. 8. Met Tony Blackman and his lovely lady Kate, a wonderful meeting that furthered the Capuchin Rule. (Fegs are the nicest people.) And thanks for the party favours, Tony! (Note I also spelled "favours" in the English way, just for you!) (Also the way I used to spell it in High School just to pretentiously annoy my teachers.) I haven't seen the Soft Boys on stage. But I have seen Kimberly with Katrina And The Waves. Back in '97, K&W won the Eurovision song competition with some tremendous schlock bit of fluff called "Let The Light Shine" or something like that. Kimberly was doing every rawk-gawd pose imaginable, wearing a red suit (looked like velvet, but I can't be sure), Beatle boots, and a ruffled shirt. The thing that shocked me, though was his face-- if you take Robyn's photo off the back cover of "Moss Elixir" (the one where he's wearing the sunglasses and showing Bugs Bunny teeth), and draw on a little evil goatee (and we've all done THAT before), the two of them are dead ringers. Thinking about it, if you see the video for K&W's "Walking On Sunshine", there's that shot of Kimberly playing during the bridge, waggling his head with a hideous grimace on his face. That is, taking people's old (or new) LP's, digitally remastering them, and transfering them to CD(-R) media, for archival purposes. That way, you don't have to risk wearing out (decreasing the sound quality of) your favorite records by playing them over and over, and you in turn have the music in a much more practical format -- you can listen in the car, on your portable CD player, etc. -- and the sound quality will not decrease over time. Recently, I've invested in lots of expensive equipment (actually, the $1600 mastering software was more expensive than any actual hardware component), and tonight, I will have the complete setup I need to start transferring, because I'm going to pick up the turntable (with digital analog out port) that I ordered several weeks ago. The first things that I'll be experimenting with, of course, will be _Mossy Liquor_ and the double-LP _Storefront Hitchcock_ set. Since they are essentially brand-new, never-been-played records, there won't really be any pop/click reduction, etc, to deal with, so it will be ideal for my first practice session. Besides, I've been wanting to have these on CD for ages. Anyway, if any of you would like copies of either of these two items on CD, I'll be happy to let them go for US$5.00 for the single, US$8.00 for the double-CD set. This price only covers my cost of materials -- high-end (Mitsui silver) CD-R media, glossy labels and inserts (front and back), jewel case, ink for photo printer. Or, we can work out a trade of some kind -- tapes, whatever. Of course, copyright law will not allow me to make copies of these CD's for anyone who does not already own them on vinyl. Let me know off-list if you're interested. You'll honestly be doing me a favor by giving me more practice doing this before I offer the service commercially. Thanks in advance, Aaron PS: The going price for having your vinyl LP's converted to CD's is around US$30.00, FYI. * Aaron Lowe [ aaron@aaronlowe.com ] http://aaronlowe.com "Don't wait up any longer, I'm not coming home. There are a million companies out there making filtering software that is designed to effectively remove scratches, clicks, pops, hiss sounds, or fills in dropouts, but the higher-ends ones (unlike the filters packaged with, say, Adaptec's Easy CD Creator Deluxe, which were developed by a company who chiefly deals with making software drivers for SCSI devices, of all things) actually do what they purport to do quickly, efficiently, and effectively. Uh, I could be wrong about this, but AFAIK copyright law >forbids you to make copies of them, period. (At least digitally.) This is an interesting contention, although I've never heard anything like that. If so, then there are a lot of very visible, public business that are blatantly disregarding this "law." If you can find any support for your claim, I'd be very interested to find out about it, for obvious reasons. > >PS: The going price for having your vinyl LP's converted to > >CD's is around US$30.00, FYI. > >Hmm. I won't argue with your figures, but FYI, you can >already get stereo-component CD recorders for only ten >times that. So I guess what I'm saying is that this might >not be the best business to get into right now, since anyone >who wants to do more than a handful of LP's will probably >want to just do the whole thing themselves. Maybe you can >send some of that gear back for a refund? You're right -- I was just looking at some stereo-component CD recorders at Best Buy recently. The problem, though is that they are just that -- CD recorders. You get a recording of the original, clicks, pops, and all. I don't know much about them -- maybe they have some neo-equivalent of dreaded Dolby noise reduction, so that you can "get rid" hiss by dulling all the highs and lows of the recording. The more intelligent, CPU-monopolizing noisegate filters will selectively remove very narrow frequency ranges, and thus produce an incomparably higher quality recording. You're right, though, that my target customer base is not the techno-/stereophile who will indubitably buy a component recorder and copy his records himself. I have been quite surprised by the volume of previous customers who've been calling, asking when and if I'll be able to do vinyl transfers. I guess you could say that my target customer base is one of fairly affluent music collectors who want their albums converted to CD and don't want the hassle of trying to do it themselves. The point is, I guess, that there are a lot more audiophiles who are not necessarily, in turn, techo-/stereophiles than I ever first imagined. They're out there, I can assure you. I already have more than enough customers lined up to more than pay for the money I've invested in equipment, software, and so forth. I tried to respond to your message without being overly argumentative, and I hope I've succeeded in doing so. Sorry if I've offended anyone (unless you're a member of the RIAA, in which case, I'm quite pleased with myself).
