In between songs on Storefront Hitchcock, a performance documentary he made with director Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs) that's slated for video release later this year, the cult-favorite songwriter observes, "If it weren't for our rib cages, there'd just be spleens-a-go-go." Hitchcock, 46, has a habit of turning a phrase on it's ear and making it squirm, but he does it in such a melodious, Beatlesque way that you can't help but surrender to the world according to Robyn. - Mike Mettler MM: I find your new album, Jewels for Sophia, very loose and relaxed. It seems practically off the cuff. RH: Recording can be such an uptight process. If you rehearse too much and make it too slick, there's not much left to discover in the music. That's why I have these tapes rolling while the arrangements are being worked out. Jewels is a contemporary roots record. It couldn't have been made during any other time. It's not fast or turgid enough for the '70s and it doesn't have any sampled bits for the '80s. MM: How do you feel about MP3? Could it be considered "the artists' revenge?" RH: Well, it won't be the artists' revenge unless we can make money from it. It's a good idea, but it's still in the intermediary stage. But, you know, Beethoven never dreamed his work would be on vinyl, let alone CD or MP3. And tomorrow's state of the art is the day after tomorrow's antique. MM: What do you think of the Internet? RH: For one thing, I'm very suspicious of screens. The more that you can do on screens makes them all the more insidious and indispensible. Soon what you'll find is some device that'll become the global jukebox, or something that'll be called the Utensil. The days of the separate wrench, radio, or rake will disappear. With a twist of your pen cap, you'll be able to download Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love," or your mobile phone will be able to give you counseling, open a can of tomatoes, ring your mother, and catch fish for your dinner. You'll be leaving your house and your wife will say, "Honey, did you bring the Utensil?" MM: So has technology replaced creativity? RH: The myth is that equipment will write the songs for you. Ambient music is headless, if you will. It's low on personality. The importance of the songwriter is fading. MM: What will they write instead? RH: They'll write programs. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Oct 1999 16:42:57 -0700 (PDT) From: Griffith Davies Subject: Re: full frontal nudity (0%RH) This thread reminds me of the movie "Throw Mama From the Train". I've been enjoying everyone's reviews of the shows. I feel lucky that I got to see Robyn three times last weekend, and kinda sad that I won't be seeing him again this weekend. It was great seeing Robyn in such an intimate setting. Watching Kimberley was definitely a highlight for me. No one seems to have mentioned that Kimberley set up and tuned everyone's guitars! Had I not recognized him, I would've thought he was employed by the club. He has a certain "elfin magic" about him, and looks like Dana Carvey until he starts playing...then he becomes Nigel Tufnel. It doesn't surprise me to hear that the band just keeps getting tighter. The first two shows were ragged yet great fun. Kim basically just didn't know some parts of some songs, but he made up for it with his playing on the JFS tracks. E-bowrific! It was apparent that some rehearsal and arranging took place between Saturday's and Sunday's shows. Everyone who showed up an hour early got to hear the band play "Oceanside" two or three times, with frequent stops to correct back-up vocals. Robyn played a new song early in Sunday's set:"I Wish I Liked You." I was kinda amused when someone asked him the title, and he had no choice but to respond... Anyway keep the reviews coming! This is maybe a little embarassing, as it was before some of you were born. I believe these were still after its heyday as a country fried grease only pit. I think they still rope in acts on, like, Tuesday nights and make them pay to play there and then the band gets a bunch of tickets that they try to hand to homeless people to get in. I've known lots of poor stupid bastards that got gigs there and at the Whiskey, only to find out that it cost them about a grand for the priveledge. I did my stuff for the LA Burgers (impressive proggish punk) and Wink (kinda the same band with sugar and lard added.) Actually, the guitarist of both was one of Lee Rittenour's students. He (the guitarist in the band) was absolutely amazing. I even appeared on Wink's album. You can hear me making noise in "Find Me a Way." In response to Eb, he's right. You can't be very far from the stage, but you do have to crane your neck if you're not in the middle, and the acoustics in the place aren't great. I hope nobody is trying to mix stereo there, that would be duckin' fisaster. The stage is kinda nice. My few favorite venues that I can think of right this instant: 1. Kuumbwa in Santa Cruz (Dan Bern will be there on 9/11.) Only can seat 200. Great acoustics. Intimate. 2. Great American Music Hall (RH on 9/17.) Really good acoustics not quite as intimate. Lots of great nights spent there (mostly Robyn- ~4 times?, also Stan Ridgway.) 3. Freight and Salvage in Berzerkly. As big as could possibly be intimate. I don't think they ever do really loud shows. I really like good outdoor places like the Greeks (Berkeley and Griffith Park.) This is not to comment negatively about the nationalities of other venues. Best happies to y'all, - -Markg ps. Marcy ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Oct 1999 04:15:06 EDT From: DDerosa5@aol.com Subject: Robyn and Kimberley: two incredibly talented guys in need of haircuts Hey it's 3 in the morning, and I just came back from the show. Met Ethyl and Quail and LJ and Bayard and Chris Gross and that capitalism guy with the mics on his glasses. Good show. Don't have a setlist, though I watched Eddie write it down. I was boppin', and Robyn stood for the whole show (so his back's better?) and did weird hand dances that were like Phishhead puppet shows. Fun. So, here's my complaint: I love Robyn, have seen him for years, and the brand new excitement for me on this tour is Kimberley Rew. And I see why, he may be absurd but he's concurrently way cool. When he and Robyn got in sync on QoE, or rocked out on the Perspex Island material, it's viscerally exciting (to use a critspeak word: now it's all yours, Eb), but there's way too little of him. He's reverby decoration. I want more. I talked to both him and Robyn after the show-KR seemed amenable to more solos etc (I was yelling out "Muriel's Hoof" during the show, which shows what a dreamer I am), but Robyn said MH would require way too much practice, and he "wasn't in that space anymore". So I followed up by asking for IWDY, and was told he'd outgrown that. So I challenged him to put Kimberley to better use, and he said they were still working songsout, and would have a coupla new (i.e., according to my understanding, not new, but undone on this tour) songs ready by Chicago. YAY! Questions: why did KR never tour with the Egyptians, which would've been a de facto SB reunion? It seemed fair to assume an RH/KR split, but maybe it was him mad at Andy or Morris instead? Or, if it was with Robyn, it's better and we have something to look forward to? I only ask cause tonight's show was great, and I look forward to the Chill show, but I wanna see KR do more. I want Return of the Sacred Crab, or Smoothie, or etc. He adds great stuff to Sally (I asked Robyn about that tonight while the club Upstage was playing DitD, and he said they were only rhythmically similar, not melodically. Someone more melodic than me will have to refute that…) and they did Antwoman, with a distorted oboe (? clarinet, someone said? looked like adouble reed) as GLB, but I want SBoys tunes, and Kimberley seems ready to give them. We'll see…. And KR had a great shirt on, an Escher-esque meta-paisley (by the way, Paisley is my new sister-in-law's last last name, though her maiden name is Matt, she's the sister of semi-famous autobiographical cartoonist Joe Matt, of Peep Show fame, who'll have a spread in the December Details), and a Robin Williams' Mork rainbow strap as a guitar strap, and I want to see more of him. And Robyn was in good voice, and the half of the departure Lounge set I caught was good (I bought their single), and I danced a lot and drank beer (in the old Revival space, for those who knew Philly ten years ago, when I used to cover shows there for B-side magazine) OK, goodnight, more tomorrow. If I keep typing, I'll end up embarrassing myself by saying how absolutely adorable LJ is. And I don't want to wake up embarrassed. So I won't say nothing. Not even about how Quail is cute too, but in a boy way, like I bet Eco was hitting on him and he didn't even notice, but this is all irrelevant, and thanks for the beer Carrie, you're a doll... dave ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Oct 1999 04:20:48 EDT From: DDerosa5@aol.com Subject: sea-tac dance I didn't see it during the song...was it performed? did I miss it? can we gt it on American bandstand? can Mr. And Mrs. America do it? well then why should we? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Oct 1999 00:31:56 -0800 From: "Brett Cooper" Subject: Re: Blair which project?? >From: tanter > So we just finished watching BW--didn't see it at the movies, waited for the > video. Since I work at a video rental store for a second odd job, I have heard the gauntlet regarding The Blair Witch. I saw it in the theaters, I own the DVD. I thought the movie was nothing short of brilliant. Seems to me that those who aren't too impressed with it I think might have missed the point of the film. For example, one woman told me that she wanted something more professional. DUH! Also, now that one person might have gotten sea sick from the shaky camera, everyone seems to be hopping on the "I got sick while watching it" bandwagon. Please, people. Anyways, those are my Blair Witch rantings. Loved the movie, hated the moviegoers.
