All this reminiscing has gotten me all worked up. I NEED to see Robyn again on this tour. One of the last dates would be appropriate -- I'm hoping that by that time, he will have practiced a few new things with the band, so I can hear him perform some other songs I've never heard him do. Another perk of living in a major city again is easy access to a Big Airport. Anyway, my flying across the country to see Robyn is not unprecedented -- I flew from Houston to Chicago to see him back in '95. I'm looking at the tourdates on woj's page right now. Nov. 19th or 20th seem like the best bets, since they are a Friday and Saturday. Great American Music Hall in San Francisco? Or Troubadour in Los Angeles? Anyone know anything about either of these venues? Which would you see if you were me? I pulled into Atlanta around 3:30 or so on Monday, October 25, driving up from Tallahassee. I did a quick few hours of record shopping at Wuxtry and Wax'n'Facts before heading down to the Echo Lounge area of town. I slipped into the Flatiron pub and ordered a Guinness and within minutes Bibi G. showed up. Great girl, Bibi. She's been on the list for years, but doesn't do that much posting. Anyway, she's a lit professor at Georgia Tech and super super nice. Her friend Scott eventually turned up and we strolled around, grabbing a bite to eat. Bibi was ecstatic when I let her touch my foil Thoth hanging from my rearview mirror. Anyway, we stopped back in at the Flatiron to see if Eddie had showed up yet...what with his 16 hour drive from Austin. There at the bar was a head-shaved guy hunched over an ice water. Yep...Eddie! After initial intro's and some talk, we zipped over to the Echo Lounge. The Echo is a newish place (small, dark, your typical club) that has stolen all the business from The Point, which has now closed. Anyway, doors opened rather late. The interior is half black-walled club, half spacey-retro chic lounge. Eddie said it was straight from the set of Sleeper. Nice suspended bubble chairs and some Mork'n'Mindy rockin' egg chairs. Tim Keegan & Departure Lounge came out (introduced by a t-shirted Robyn) and did a wonderfully atmospheric-mellow set. No one should miss them! Their drummer Lindsay is simply stunning to hear and watch. Very tasteful, whatever that means. Lots of little casio synths, odd percussion, etc. I didn't pick up their CD (yet), but really enjoyed the set. Robyn strolled out a bit later wearing the ubiquitous green/purple flower trousers and black linen shirt (apparently his garb of choice for the first leg of the tour). Robyn sat quite a bit because of his back injury. He even mentioned that "I've been in show business for 25 years, and this is the first time I've even sat through most of a show". Of course, Robyn toughened up as the evening wore on and braved the pain to stand through most of the electic set. Starfucking note: Adam Duritz was standing around chatting right next to us up by the stage. A few people gathered around him, but most just snickered and stayed away. Of the first 5 shows or so of this tour, this was the only one where Robyn did 2 encores! Here's the setlist: Mexican God The Devil's Coachman Take This In Remembrance Ride (enter Tim) De Chirico Street (enter Jake on bass) I Saw Nick Drake (enter Lindsay on drums and Kimberley) Jewels For Sophia Cheese Alarm Madonna Of The Wasps Queen Of Eyes Antwoman Birds In Perspex Oceanside (encore 1) She Doesn't Exist You And Oblivion Kingdom Of Love (enter Tim, Lindsay, Jake, and Kimberley) Adoration Of The City Elizabeth Jade (encore 2) Sleeping With Your Devil Mask Sally Was A Legend Beautiful Queen Oh yeah, Robyn mentioned the new CD (out January 2000) will be called "A Star For Bram" (Bram?). So, the show was great. Also met a semi-feg named John(?) that lives down Gainesville, FL way (attention Terry). Afterwards, we split up, said aloha to Bibi and Scott, and Eddie and I crashed at a Motel 8 outside of Atlanta. Now, Eddie has already got the room prior to the show, and there was just one king size bed. Luckily, Eddie slept with his autographed Eb glamour-shot, so he pretty much kept to his side of the bed. More to come... It's on a small wooded hill that slopes down to this quiet restful lake. I pulled off and sat for about an hour strumming my guitar and just not thinking about anything. Real bliss. Anyway, I met back up with Eddie at Dede's place. Dede's a very nice gal with great taste in music and a real Connells groupie! She took us down to a little veggie eatery/club called Fat City and I had a tremendously scruptious bowl of black eyed pea salad! Eddie stuck to the falafel. We strolled through a nearby art room and just hung about until early evening. We made the 2 hour plus drive up to Carrboro/Chapel Hill, arriving around 9:15 or so. The show was running late; we found out later that Olivia Tremor Control had called to say they were running really late, so the schedule became Tim first, then Robyn, then OTC. Robyn actually didn't finish up until after 1am, with OTC taking the stage at 2am. Anyway, the Cat's Cradle was a nice little dive of a club. Eddie and I snagged some Robyn flyers and JfS flats. Spazzy mouth movements, rocking head and gray hear...very much more animated than Robyn, whose more stoic (except for the blinking and flipping of hair). One item of note: someone was videoing the Atlanta show, and Robyn's only comment was that it would be more interesting if they got different angles, maybe passing the camera through the crowd. However, at Carrboro, Robyn was visibly annoyed at one person taking a few snapshots from the front of the stage and asked them to put the camera away. Guess it depends on the night how he'll be with that... Also: Eddie got snagged by Robyn's tour manager and Cat's Cradle "security" while taping the Departure Lounge set. After some talk and Robyn's tour manager going back to check with Robyn, Eddie was given the A-OK to tape. After these first few stumbling gigs, taping should be easier for everyone with no hassles. I later spoke with the tour manager, who is really nice...gave me his card. I bought one of the puke-green shirts (which is somewhat hideous once I put it on...hopefully Eddie will snag me a more normal purple one soon) and a Tim Keegan CD. Tim, Jake and Lindsay were hanging out by the door so I went up and got their autographs and we talked at length about the tour, the movie (Tim was very happy that I'd seen it and said he was really happy with it and that it would probably become a cult thing). Eddie strolled up and Tim and the gang found out he'd be stalking them for the rest of the tour.
