I just want to clear up a few things regarding Ms Lindhurst's otherwise excellent review of the Elvis Costello concert. 1. I was, in fact, not standing and shouting "Allissooooooon!!!." Like any good concertgoer, *I* was shouting "Freebird!" over and over again. LJ Lindhurst, however, did attract some attention by throwing her bra at the stage. Of course, since were were in Row V, as in the 22nd letter and not as in the Roman Numeral, said article of clothing only made it as far as the head of some aging Costello Lister, who looked at the bra for a few seconds in confusion, undoubtedly thinking it some new form of diaper or cell-phone holder, before passing it sedately to his 13 year old daughter. 2. Unlike LJ "Purist" Lindhurst, I liked his re-arrangements of older songs. One of my favorites was actually one of her least favorites -- "Watching the Detectives." Stripped of the Attractions, the song was built up through Elvis and Steve trading cool flourishes, licks and riffs around an invisible groove, which gave it a very sinister and snakey feel. I also liked the new "Green Shirt," which sounded a bit like Kraftwerk or early Tangerine Dream. Very unusual. . . 3. The second night was better than the already great first night. Elvis sang one of my favorite songs, "Shipbuilding," and simply howled the ending far away from the microphone, giving me chills and raising my Elvis Appreciation Index from 3.5 to 4.5 Bowies. (Only David Bowie gets 5 Bowies.) Other Great Quail Moments: "After the Fall (1)," "God's Comic (1)," "I Want You (2)," and "Veronica (2)." 4. The new material was terrific! Basically, it came in three flavors. The first, more traditional-sounding Elvis songs, were my favorites. "Alibi," "You Lie Sweetly," and "You Loved Me When I was Cruel" may or may not be the names of some *great* new songs. There were a few more, but I can't think of any plausible titles. The second type of song were the "situational" songs, written for others of about movie characters. Thematically, they reminded me of the songs on "The Juliet Letters." And the third were songs written in collaboration with Steve Nieve, and are all obviously very inspired by Burt Bacharach, having that same torchy feeling. I liked them, though, because they had that same beautiful melody and emotional build-up you find on "Painted," but the music was based on piano and not some ghastly twenty-piece band with three swaying women, ticking drums, and Skeletor Himself tickling the ivories. 5. He didn't play Freebird. But he did cover "Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven When You Smile)" by Van my Man Morrison! 6. Without the Bacharach band/lounge touches, I found myself very much enjoying all the "Painted from Memory" material. I began to see why another generation would swoon to the likes of Sinatra. 7. I second a call for bootlegs -- if anyone knows of anyone who recorded these shows, please let us know! 8. Of those of you who've bought the new limited edition XTC CD _Homespun_, what do you think of it? I stumbled across this disc while looking for some RH vinyl (in order to procure an autograph on Sun. night, which I did!) at Waterloo Records in Austin this weekend. The track listing is identical to that of Apple Venus vol. 1, except that they're all (supposedly) home demos that preceded the studio versions on the album. The idea of hearing a "raw, unpolished" version of XTC was too intriguing to pass up, and I had to buy the CD. I couldn't help thinking that XTC seemed the last band I could imagine who would release a CD of demos. The verdict: Production on these tracks does fall short of the typically slick depth of the album versions, but the only way you can tell that they're home demos is by comparing them with the studio versions. My friend Brent and I were driving around Austin Sunday afternoon, listening to _Homespun_ and exploring, and we came to the conclusion that there are a lot of bands who struggle for years to attain the kind of slick production that XTC accomplishes in these "home demos." The one notable exception is "I'd Like That," which is actually a very stripped-down, muffled version with just A.P. and a guitar. It's so un-XTC-like that it's frightening, but just hearing it made buying the CD worthwhile to me. Well, of course *I* like it, but that's a given. I'm not so sure it's a limited edition, though. I suspect if they can actually sell all 20,000 copies, they'll print more of them. As for the material, when I got the studio version of AV I thought I liked the demos better, but since I've gotten used to the studio versions I think I like *those* better. Shows how fickle the human ear can be, I suppose. Anyway, I doubt we'll see another CD like this from XTC; from a marketing standpoint, it's really a pretty bad idea, much as I enjoy having clean copies of these demos. >I couldn't help thinking that XTC seemed the last band I >could imagine who would release a CD of demos. Supposedly they're releasing as many as 4 CD's worth of unreleased stuff starting next year, so hey, you'll just have to get used to it! (Btw, I wonder how many copies of "You and Oblivion" were sold?) >...we came to the conclusion that there are a lot of bands who >struggle for years to attain the kind of slick production that XTC >accomplishes in these "home demos." Now this is an interesting point, but this is probably going to change as the price of home digital recording gear (esp. multi- track hard-disk recorders) falls, assuming the software ever gets easier to use. You can get really nice packages for $400 now... You just have to know how to work 'em. Of course, Andy P. has always tried to make his demos as finished-sounding as possible because he probably doesn't want anybody (especially an outside producer) changing his songs in any significant way. In recent interviews he's finally been admitting that he considers himself to have produced most of XTC's albums (Skylarking being the notable exception) and the people who were hired to produce them were really there as a buffer between him and the other band member(s). Of course, there are those who believe Andy to be somewhat full of himself. >The one notable exception is "I'd Like That," which is actually >a very stripped-down, muffled version with just A.P. and a guitar.
