I think you're taking my comments a lot more seriously than I gave them. I've already told you that I don't have specific alternate candidates in mind. But if, as you say, CDNow is well aware that the exercise is absurd, I don't see how it's blowing hot air to present one reason why that is clearly the case. Anyway, I didn't come in here for an argument, I came here for abuse, so you're just getting the hang of it, I think. >>My point was simply that the exercise of choosing the top ten lyricists of >>the millennium is inherently absurd. > >And CDNow is well aware of this. All the lists are presented as such. Speaking of absurd lists, on VH1, Prince's "When Doves Cry" was just presented as the number one song (perhaps they qualified it as "the best rock 'n' roll song of all time" -- it was hard to tell) of all time. Numbers two and three were, IIRC, Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" and Aretha Franklin's "Respect", Respectively. "Like a Rolling Stone" was mentioned but didn't make the top three. Nor -- sadly! -- did Alanis's "You Oughta Know." Drew - -- Andrew D. I have not yet seen American Beauty, so I can't compare it. But I can tell you I have not laughed that hard in forever. For those who have not seen it, I definately place it as my pick for Best Picture of the Year. It has it all! Fighting, humor, cute messed up guys, a cute chick, car crash, bombs. Self referential humor. The best dialog in a movie since South Park! I am making it out less seriious that maybe I should; there is a semi serious theme to it - nihilistic distruction! Anyone who is a fan of AdBusters Magazine will appriciate it big time! Thats my 2 cents Eleanore Joel Mullins wrote: > I saw Fight Club last night and I really enjoyed it. Or maybe it was Oct. 20-22. I really want to go, but haven't found a (free) way in yet. My concert budget is rather tapped out right now, obviously. Supposedly, the shows are preceded by a hourlong Q&A session. Ugh...how academic. Weird, that the last time I saw her live was *15 years ago*. Wow, time flies. Alive and well, thank you very much. Irene did in fact take us by surprise. Once we get through August and September, we pretty much loosen up and forget hurrican season is still here. Lots and lots of rain, but relatively minor flooding problems...Florida is already one big flat swamp, so we don't really "flood" like the rest of the country does. My yard looks a bit trashed, what with branches and leaves and all, but no damage to speak of. A few downed big-ol-100-year oaks around town, and a bunch of people still without power, but overall nothing too bad. It really makes you stop and pause, seeing what a little old Category 1 storm can do, and makes you get down and thank someone that big bad Floyd passed us by. Mike (preparing to brave the even scarier winter weather once I venture up and out of Florida next week!) Runion ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Oct 1999 20:43:28 -0800 From: Eb Subject: quick aside I listened to the new Beck disc tonight. It's a good album, but not quite a great one. May be somewhat of a disappointment, commercially. It's less samples and hip-hop, more funk and soul. The songs are definitely written in an Odelay style, however. Very little folk. Unfortunately for Beck (and DGC), it doesn't have another killer single. I'm sure some of you already feel iffy about "Sexx Laws".... Eb ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Oct 1999 01:05:56 -0700 From: Joel Mullins Subject: Gay Parade I got Of Montreal's Gay Parade recently and I fucking love it! It's such a happy album, which I guess is why they called it "The Gay Parade." Anyway, everytime I listen to it, I smile and laugh the whole time. For some reason, I didn't expect to like it this much, which I guess is why I waited so long to get it. And I still haven't heard an E6 album that I didn't like (I doubt I'll buy The Music Tapes album). Joel ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V8 #389 *******************************
