I think that Powers' Gold Bug Variations is one of the very best novels of the 90s. I saw Bablicon at Terrastock III. They were playing a brilliant punk- jazz hybrid. They were multi-instrumentalists but I think that's where the similarity to OTC ends. They were supposed to tour with OTC this summer but then OTC pulled out leaving Bablicon with very few gigs, and a long-ish stay in Leicester (Brit-fegs will know that this is not a particularly thrilling prospect). Maybe some of the musicians have played with OTC. The only Bablicon member I caught the name of was Griffin Rodriguez. On the album I've got they go under silly pseudonym's; The Diminisher, Marta Tennae and Blue Hawaii (good name that last one, tee, hee!). jmbc (a.k.a. I must say, it's a good thing it was centered so far from a heavily populated area; otherwise, I might be picking rubble out of my pants. So far, seems the worst damage was a derailed train out near Barstow. I was at work when it happened, and the power went out for a split second, freezing our computers and slowing me down. Of course, if my co-workers weren't so damn lazy, I could have enjoyed the quake from the privacy of my own home, which, incidentally, is fine. Nothing even knocked off the shelves. Boy, we all really dodged a bullet over here on this one. Compared to Turkey, Taiwan and Mexico, we got off light. Thank your lucky stars, fellow SoCal citizens. I'm going to bed.
