I saw Elf Power and Fable Factory at the Mermaid Lounge in New Orleans last night. Not sure what the full arkestra would be, but both bands kept swapping members out, and during Elf Power, a couple of members of Fable Factory came up for support on a few songs. found Fable Factory kind of rough, too rough... in fact, i was a little disappointed. They had a late start, and seemed a little drunk. They played about an hour, but it seemed to last longer. The crowd seemed to enjoy it, but I was cringing at points. I've never heard their recordings though, and wasn't sure if they were supposed to sound like that, or whether the audience's minds were filling in the blanks. They were extremely nice, and enthusiastic during their own set and Elf Power's, but... Anyway, Elf Power seemed to play only half an hour, but played over an hour I guess. Very fun and energetic. Made the whole night slip away. Tight set. Set list? I dunno.... I was a little drunk at that point. I just remember that they closed with a cover of Eno's "Needle in the Camel's Eye" and there were a few songs that I wish that they played, but they didn't. It was worth the hour and a half drive and two hours of sleep though, I think. Need to catch more live shows. No Minders yet. It was only the second show of the tour. Guess they are going to pick them up later. badger ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Oct 1999 13:51:03 -0400 (EDT) From: "Mike O'Connor" Subject: Re: Bonehead bookings Oh hush! :) I think that folks who show up specifically to see Robyn aren't in the same category as those who see a Brittany Spear-us or whatever wank-job musicians teenyboppers listen to. Huh. I wonder if anyone besides Robyn and O'Hagan has used this word in song? As for the album itself, it's the same old thing. The Llamas have done better, they've done worst. I will say this: If you're one of those who didn't like all the Stereolab-isms on Cold & Bouncy, you'll be pleased to know that those effects are entirely gone on Snowbug. This one sounds more like Hawaii. However, as with recent Stereolab, there's plenty of rhythmic vibraphone. Plus, Stereolab's Laetitia and Mary do lots of guest vocals (good, because O'Hagan's voice is the Llamas' biggest liability). Oh, and be advised that I got the new album by some dude named "Mommus" (sp?) a couple of days ago. Haven't played it yet. Speaking of which (sort of), I *ADORE* the commercial for themselves they're running where the cute little indie boy is strolling down the halls of his high school, jeered at by everyone, as he gradually cranks the volume on his Walkman. Never mind that he is an audience thoroughly ignored by MTV in its current form. I can't decide what I like best about it. He really is a cute kid, and how can I resist "20th Century Boy"?
