Lest I be perceived as too "anti-intellectual" or with a dearth of "analytical" ability, let me just quote the dictionary at you. In this case, Webster. attitude [...] 2a: a mental position with regard to a fact or state b: a feeling or emotion toward a fact or state 3: a position assumed for a specific purpose [...] So you get some of the emotional content in there, sure, but you notice that none of these definitions really includes the "fact or state" itself, which is what I was getting at with "lyrical content." The attitudes expressed in Lennon's "Give Peace a Chance" and Skinny Puppy's "VX Gas Attack" bear some resemblance to one another, but to identify them both as "anti-war songs" is already to introduce the "fact or state" (armed conflict). And there's a lot more to know about these songs, about the way they're structured and the way they treat their subjects and the imagery they use and the specificity of detail and the different emotions they induce and how directly they state (or leave to be inferred) their messages, that you really *need* in order to identify one as a quasi-goth-industrial song and the other as, well, a Lennon anthem. So: lyrical/emotional content includes attitude, but not vice versa. Similarly: glam, punk, and art-rock influenced "post-punk," goth, and eventually 90s Britpop. So goth could be said to have a "David Bowie slant," but David Bowie could not be said to have a "goth slant." Time flows in one direction in my universe. Drew - -- Andrew D. One way that SCA - or at least non-SCA(tm) groups but still with the same basic ethos - have been effective in NZ is to defuse local anger to some extent by lampoon. Recently, for example, there was a lot of local anger at regional government plans to shift the border between the provinces of Otago and Canterbury (the US equivalent would be...hmmm... like deciding that Wheeling is geographically more part of Ohio than WVa, or that the Florida panhandle should extend across to Mobile). The day after a slice of Otago was - against the locals' wishes - officially made part of South Canterbury, the "Waitati Militia" invaded, planting Otago flags across the region, and were met by "Alf's Imperial Canterbury Rangers". It provided just the right amount of light relief to the situation. I could understand why some people might think this is dark (most of my friends find it hilarious). Then again perhaps all that time in Baltimore has warped my sense of such things. The evening started with a surprise as I arrived a bit early with a friend (who had no idea what he was in for). The Portland Arms is basically a pub with a little room in the back for concerts. Since the door (if I said "doors" it would really be making a much bigger deal out of this place than it really is). We grabbed our pints of ale and given the shortage of spaces had to ask if we could join someone at an existing table. Since I was not really paying much attention to what was going on, I suddenly found myself sitting at a table together with Kimberley Rew in the middle of being interviewed by Robyn's 'official biographer.' I really appreciated seeing Robyn play this location. I was introduced to Robyn's music first by hearing "I Often Dream of Trains", and the second thing I heard was a "Softboys Live at Portland Arms" tape which was making the rounds when I was in college, so the place felt quite special. The room was no bigger than an average living room; the stage taking up about a third of the available space. Standing room only obviously. I estimate that there were room for no more than 80 people (which makes me curious how many of them are on this list). Robyn started off by pointing to a small corner next to the stage and joked that that's where they played when they first started off. Terry Edwards and the Scapegoats opened with a set which made think of them as somewhat of a cross between Morphine and the Lounge Lizards (John Lurie) with a bit of John Zorn (in a gentler mood). Robyn come on and started accoustically and solo, Kimberly came on later when they went electric. Someone is bound to be able to give a full set list, as I spotted at least two people scribbling furiously in notebooks. Robyn was relatively chatty during the acoustic set, making local comments about the club and Cambridge and the time here (including a bad pun, when Kimberley came on stage, on the fact they had been living in Kimberley Rue--road in French--which had the audience groaning, with a smile). For what its worth the 'official Robyn biographer' who was standing behind me at the time related something which had never been clear to me, the fact that Robyn was enrolled at the University for 'a term'. Which seems pretty obvious, but I've never seen mentioned in any of the bios I've read so far. Personally I was most happy to get a great version of "I Often Dream of Trains" during the encores when Terry Edwards encouraged Robyn and Kimberley to "play something" while he was putting his sax back together. Both Randi & I and her friends - fegs & familiar faces - know Randi is so terrified that she can be hurt so much easier. Her 'surgical / life in general' ratio is so far out of whack that it's hard for her not to get everything ready in case she really does die. It also means she takes everything so seriously. For the record - I happen to know Randi has a lot of respect for Jeme, particularly as a writer. It's hard for her right now - no doctor willing to take responsibility for her future - it hurts to see the dimming sparkle of humour & joy & the light in Randi's expressive eyes. She is trying really hard - though she has yet to figure out why people care about her (!?) - she's trying to absorb the kind thoughts and best wishes. And in the same key, Tony! It was my first Hitchcock concert in 2 years, and the first time I have ever seen Kimberley Rew live - a hobbit with a white semi-acoustic guitar. Several songs I had never heard live before, and blessedly free of 'Gene Hackman', 'Devil's Radio' and 'de Chirico Street', which seemed to be in every set I saw for some time. I was a bit disappointed that he didn't include 'Insanely Jealous'. And I would have liked the drummer to have taken part in a few more numbers, notably 'Kingdom of Love', for which RH and KR just played their standard front-line guitar licks, leaving huge gaps where the rhythm section are supposed to fill in. They should either rearrange this properly as a 2-guitar piece or bring in some backing. 'Airscape' was fine except for the horrible square wave distortion sound used on the guitar break. Otherwise the best numbers were (predictably) 'Queen of Eyes' and (less predictably) 'Birds in Perspex'. 'Beautiful Queen' worked well, but I still don't like 'Adoration of the City' - too monotonous. Very good show, though I still prefer the Egyptians. Robyn seemed to be getting on so well with Kimberley that I suspect a Soft Boys reunion gig must be on the cards next year.
