The 'breathy thing', written in the lyrics as "ooottthhssss" (which Quail will, of course, recognise as Joyce's description of the waves breaking at Sandymount) is probably best described as a 'sharp intake of breath' when John thinks about the evil wench he is singing about. As to the 'tit tit tit' part, I regard this song as the best greek folk song the Beatles ever wrote! James ('fish and finger pies' indeed!) I don't know about pretty, but the tunes that stick in my head from _Forest_ would be "Trenchmouth," "The New Zero," "Rose K.," "The Olde Headboard," "You Don't Own Me" (though it's very irritating and not a Rasputina original), "Sign of the Zodiac," and "Watch T.V." I don't own _Regurgitations_ because it would have been a waste of money. _Thanks for the Ether_ is the significant Rasputina album, though. >37 worthwhile artists who make me want to wear eyeliner: This Mortal Coil, >Cocteau Twins, Swallow, Pale Saints, Spoonfed Hybrid, The Hope Blister, >Ultra Vivid Scene, The Birthday Party, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Barry >Adamson, Mick Harvey, Crime & The City Solution, Simon Bonney, The Jesus & >Mary Chain, Love & Rockets, Tones on Tail, The Cranes (the headliner, the >night I had to sit through Rasputina), Nico, Suicide, Julee Cruise, Rosa >Mota, The Cramps, He Said, A.C. I'm not familiar with some of them, but most of the rest are only vaguely dark from time to time, or else they're more on the industrial side. Of course, you just said they make you want to wear eyeliner, so maybe you had something else in mind. Nevertheless, I'm really not a huge goth fan, so I might have trouble listing 37 goth acts I actually like. Of course I love the Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, Love & Rockets, and Nick Cave, and I occasionally can stand the Cocteaus. The first two Switchblade Symphony albums were fun (and quite hilarious); I liked Miranda Sex Garden for a while, but they're pretty dull; Lycia and Love Spirals Downwards can be nice; Dead Can Dance are pleasant; Curve I like. Some of the Tess Records artists are nice but I can never remember their names or tell them apart. From the not-really-goth list I like Joy Division, PJ Harvey of course, UVS, and the wonderful, wonderful Autumns. Most of the rest of your list I can take or leave, and I'd certainly leave Nine Inch Nails. If Reznor had a sense of humor he'd be bearable, but only just. I really can't stand the Swans. I think they were bloody horrible. Um...who else? I think Soul Whirling Somewhere is, like Reznor, wasted potential. His stalker-CDs are intolerable. The latest Switchblade Symphony is crap. I don't like Marilyn Manson, or Joydrop, or Orgy -- these last two wear eyeliner and don't bother to back it up. The Sisters of Mercy -- highly overrated. The Mission UK -- boring. I could go on if I were to refresh my memory, but maybe you get the idea. Drew - -- Andrew D. Well, duh! I despise goth as a general rule, so of *course* there will be many barely-goth-if-even-at-all names on my "eyeliner list." But I think the intangible atmosphere is kinda there, both in those artists' music/image and in their fanbases. And you know, I really wouldn't classify This Mortal Coil and the Cocteaus among the most "goth" on that list, myself...I mean, gawd, who could be more gothic than Nico? >I'm not familiar with some of them Like who? I don't think any of those names are too obscure, except maybe Swallow, Spoonfed Hybrid, Rosa Mota, He Said and A.C. Marias...are those the unknown names? >Nevertheless, I'm really not a huge goth fan, so I might have trouble listing >37 goth acts I actually like. Bad reading comprehension. "Now, perhaps you can list 37 which make you want to *remove* [eyeliner]? ;)" In other words, name 37 bands you like are unambiguously NOT goth. (I figure you can, but it's still fun to put you on the spot. ;)) Eb, reliving happy memories of the vicious thrashing he gave last year's 12 Rounds album PS Randi, Randi, Randi, Randi. :( ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Sep 1999 16:58:15 -0800 From: Eb Subject: Weenieism red alert Holy mackerel. I just spent $100 on Brian Wilson in one afternoon. First, I spontaneously sped to a Ticketmaster outlet to buy a ticket for his newly announced Anaheim show on October 24th. It's a goddamn DINNER THEATER, apparently -- I gotta buy dinner, too. Sheeeesh. NOT happy with that arrangement. I bought the ticket ($71.50...ka-ching), then browsed the used-CD section. Found an indie Folk Implosion CD I've been wanting, so I took it up to the counter. While waiting in line, I noticed that they were also selling a near-mint secondhand copy of the Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations" box set for only $30 (five discs). I already have about four hours' worth of this damn thing taped from a friend, but this has never sat too well with me, since those songs are far too important to me to own on mere homemade tapes. So I ended up buying the box, TOO. Ugh. Tapped-out Eb PS They also had a used copy of Perspex Island, for those of you keeping track. ;) ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V8 #364 *******************************
