A criterion I can relate to. [I asked, of Rasputina:] > >What's not to like? > > Horrifying pretensions, I don't see them as pretentious at all. On CD, at least, they come across as talented potheads having a very good time. Mind you, it took me a very long time to get that sense of _Thanks for the Ether_ (_How We Quit the Forest_ was almost instantaneous; perhaps I was primed by then), but now I find them almost as much fun as Bis, in their own special way. On the other hand, we may have very different ideas about what constitutes pretentiousness. I steer clear of many of the bands publicly exalted by many fegs because, to me, they're horrifyingly pretentious. In some cases this seems self-evident to me, and in others it strikes me as proof of that old* adage, "There's nothing more pretentious than pretending to be unpretentious." So: Mileage May Vary. > utter tunelessness, That's just factually incorrect. Or pretentious. That's really the sort of undercutting I appreciate in them. Mind you, it's utterly graceless, but that's what's needed. Not that I doubt she really did have to take a dump. > I imagine their gothic portentousness has a certain > appeal to the > eyeliner crowd, however.... I guess you don't hear much goth. The most noise I've ever heard about Rasputina in "real" goth circles was an article in _Propaganda_. As a measure of their discernment, though, consider that they've also run a "psychoanalysis" of Fiona Apple in that silly rag. I think of _Propaganda_ sort of as a counterpart to _XY_ for the young goth crowd. But I digress. Rasputina aren't really very gothic or portentous, compared to, oh, I don't know, Alien Sex Fiend or someone. Drew * About thirty seconds old, at time of writing. ===== Andrew D. "Snappish." There is LOTS of "baroquely excessive" music I enjoy...I almost enjoy it to a fault. See all my past musings about being a guilty sucker for ornate, post-Beatles pop. I'm now surprised by the smattering of lackluster reviews that I've seen. Or maybe they just on a particularly good show last night. Stephin and Claudia were definitely in good spririts -- Mr. Merritt even skipped some rope with a just-discovered-to-be-disfunct patch cord! Maybe they were just extra psyched because they were playing at a venue as nice (aside from the chairs -- umph) as the Aladdin. All three acts that night mentioned something about how nice the venue is. Anyway, it was a foursome, with Merritt singing and playing a Tele and mandolin. Claudia played keyboards and sang both backup and a couple of leads. Another guy played cello. Another guy -- I think his name is John -- played both five-string banjo and electric guitar, including some slide. The whole show was basically fairly mellow and laid-back. The setlist was probably 75% from "69 Love Songs," which was just fine by me. So, for those of you out there who are contemplating going to see them (if there are more shows on the tour -- I don't really know), then I'd recommend it. I can't promise they'll be as totally *on* as they were last night, but you'd have yourself a great time if they were! Oh, Snakefarm was really flat live. I've now decided that multimedia shows in which some portion of the music is played on tape leave a bit to be desired. The Flaming Lips probably did just about as good with it as could maybe be done, and that still didn't totally work. Snakefarm barely worked at all . . . although I liked the effect of Anna Domino singing through a black rotary phone, which served as her effects-processed vocal mic. Kinda cool. Whatever. The kids form Boston who opened up the night were nifty. The Fly Seville is their name. I went looking for a Magnetic Fields T-shirt between bands and found the lead singer for Fly Seville out in the front vestibule peddling CDs out of a brief case. I hadn't really planned on buying anything relating to them, but then I decided, "Ah, what the hell! It was a fun little show. And I bet it'd make these guys happy to sell a few CDs on their little tour." I've got it playing in my car now (well, not *right* now). Good stuff. Guitar pop with this chick who plays keyboards and some violin. It's kinda generic, but I like all the individual elements well enough to make it a cut above. I might sell the CD come mid-November, but it's fun all the same. Okay, I've rambled on off-topically long enough. Talk to y'all later. - ------Michael K. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Sep 1999 17:51:40 -0400 (EDT) From: Christopher Gross Subject: Re: i feel dutiful On Thu, 23 Sep 1999, Eb wrote: > >> oh yeah, and I saw them > >> live once, and > >> the singer opened the concert by complaining that she > >> needed to take a > >> dump. > > > >Perfect!
