Adrian had concerns regarding finding his role in & writing songs for the new Crim, the live performances in November, and the planned extent of Crimson touring. All of these we have addressed. I don't have doubts that when the four of us get together in a room, stuff will happen. If the November shows at 12th. & Porter overload the recording process, we'll do them later. If more than four months touring in a year is too much, then we'll tour for four months. While the rest of the world rejoices that KC still has Belew, I rejoice at being clued in to the fact that King Crimson might be playing 12th and Porter here in Nashville! About time we got some live KC action,* especially since Belew has been living here for the past 3-4 years... later, Miles *O.K., Nashville got the debut of Projekt Two, which I had to miss because of a previous commitment, and King Crimson did play here once in that span - -- as part of the HORDE tour, and no friggin' way was I going to go to the trouble of getting into Starwood and spending hour upon hour rubbing elbows and more with Deadhead wannabes just to see 45 minutes of Crimso. ====================================================== Miles Goosens UNlimited edition R. Hi all... long post... filled with words and nonsense... I just got back from seeing the "new 'n' improved" version of "Yellow Submarine", which I have to say I enjoyed quite a bit. The last time I saw the movie I was about 11, and I admit I had fuzzy memories of most of it. Despite my synaptic fuzz, there are scenes I don't remember at all from my original viewing, like Jeremy apple-bonking his Meanie guard, the dialog between The Beatles and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band after the Band is freed, and even the sequence that goes with "Hey Bulldog". I seem to remember reading years ago that scenes were trimmed from the US release of the movie, so I hope I'm not hallucinating. Paul C. Glenn said: >Their bandname, of course, is a quote of some C.S. Lewis gibberish, >which may automatically label them as "Christian rock" in some circles. I have a very hard time reconciling C.S. Lewis to the whole Christian thing, even though I've read a goodly portion of his work. Why? Two words: _Screwtape Letters_. It makes the 12-year old in me (and there's enough for eight normal-sized people) giggle. This is why I'll never be an academic. I know I'll be looking at some serious piece of work and I'll see the word "butt" or "fart" and I'll just start laughing like I am right now. And I haven't even been drinking. Andrew said: >C'mon, David Bowie >proclaiming Lauryn Hill as a "breakthrough artist"? Geez, hasn't that >guy sucked enough dick in his lifetime? Apparently not. Although this raises questions about Miss Hill I hadn't even considered before. Oh, wait. This is the metaphorical dick. You're right, you'd think that a guy like Bowie, who's got himself listed on the Stock Exchange, would be past all that. When Bowie turned 50 a couple of years back, I remember reading a long interview in Q magazine. The one thing that I got from the article was that this was a man who was insecure. He wasn't insecure about his talent, but what to do with it. He was talking about his life at that point, and more importantly, his future. He constantly made references to the fact that he felt he was dated and that his records wouldn't be selling in another 10 years' time, and that he was going to be spending his remaining days crooning pre-war classics to groups of old-age pensioners in Brighton or some other English seaside town. Now I'm sure that sort of statement about his future is in part due to British-born-and-bred self-effacing humor, but I sometimes wonder, considering the ups and downs his career has gone through... and then he says that Lauryn Hill is a "breakout artist". Is he just trying to hitch his wagon to a rising star with an endorsement? Isn't self-promotion what Bowie's been all about in his career? The guy's re-invented himself more times than I've had hot dinners, and when a person of Bowie's stature gives endorsement to someone like Lauryn Hill may not just make Bowie fans think twice, it might make Lauryn Hill fans think twice as well. I don't even know why I'm wondering about this. I find Bowie's music enigmatic. I've rarely seen a personal side to it, and most of the people that have surface-only lyrics I tend to skip. But I HAVE to listen to Bowie sometimes. Usually "Low" or "Scarey Monsters" or even "Lodger". I like it and I can't tell you why. Yeah, so what? Viv said >Capitalism, communism, anarcho-syndacalism, ...only if your name happens to be Denis... >...Buddism,Islam, Computer-industry-boosterism: pick your >blindfold. I think Robyn is terribly simplisitic and >petty when he picks on religion. I like the way Robyn picks on religion, if for no other reason than to say he's irritated. He has some good reasons not to like it. Some people's views of Christianity change in their music (Gnat may disagree with me, but I think Andy Partridge's religious views did change somewhat between "Skylarking" and "Nonsuch"-- the man who wrote "Dear God" wasn't the same man that wrote "Rook"), and some people's religious views don't change. If Robyn's got an axe to grind, he could do worse than to say why he feels religion is a problem, not an aid. He could go on about band-aids or fruit trees and REALLY make himself unmarketable. >However, there are >*so* many references to God, Jesus, the Devil, etc. in >his songs that I'm convinced there has to be a better >reason than 'I grew up in a Christian country and I >hate religion.' I don't think that's where he's going at all. In the statements I've heard and the interviews I've read, Robyn says essentially that he finds spirituality a good thing, and religion is the human superstructure imposed upon spirituality to manipulate people. Manipulation isn't a good thing; it takes away freewill and eventually crushes the spirit and for this reason religion is harmful and destructive. Since we live in the West, where Christianity is a major player in religious circles, there's a lot of spirit being broken. I agree, that there's a lot of religious or belief schema you can subscribe to. But since Robyn is British, and Christianity is the stock religion in that land, it makes sense he'd gravitate towards Christianity simply as a matter of familiarity. The man tells stories. Best to use a frame of reference the storyteller and the audience can relate to. And, let's face it, religion is GREAT material. It's something that we've all been exposed to, and it's something that we can all relate to on some level. It gets great songwriting mileage. He was one of the top entertainers of his time, and some of the attendance records at certain venues have not been broken since. He outdrew Sarah Bernhardt on several occasions, and she was considered to be the finest actress of her generation. There is a lovely little biography of the man which can be found if you look around for it. Le Petomane's act would include fart impressions such as, "The bride's fart on the wedding night! (little poot) Now the bride's fart on the morning after! (BRRRRRRIPPP!)" He would connect a rubber hose to himself and connect this to a recorder or tin whistle, and toot a few tunes, so to speak. He could also blow out a candle at 10 paces, which is not a small feat if you think about it. Le Petomane died in the 1940s a fairly well-off man, considered to be a gentleman of good character, a good churchmember, and a kind father to four children. So whenever I think of Le Petomane and his Brown Star, my smile is stuck and I cannot go back to your Frownland. He was truly one who made the Dust blow forward and the dust blow back.
