So, the lull is such that our hottest current thread is about LJ's undergarments. Ah well...at least we're not talking about Quail's. In a year woefully barren of new talent, I was excited to hear a debut this morning which unexpectedly grabbed me. Just checked the band's label webpage, however, and discovered their album was released in 1998 overseas. Figures! Anyway, Snow Patrol's "Songs for Polar Bears" is nifty stuff. It's not real easy to describe in glib, shorthand terms. They're from Northern Ireland, but don't sound Irish. The singer sounds kinda like Lou Barlow, but the music doesn't sound like Sebadoh (much). Sort of a milky growl of guitars...excellent melodies. And here's something I don't praise often: the drummer is *excellent*. Really pumps life into everything he touches. Any of your college-rock titans sense a buzz about this band? I had never heard the name at all, until now. The album comes out in America on Sept. 21, via Never Records. http://www.jeepster.co.uk/snowpatrol/ Speaking of new artists, does anyone care to recommend/not recommend the Beta Band? I still haven't heard this disc, but that's definitely a new group with a buzz. I'm very curious. It's very life-affirming somehow . . . and not in that dramatic way that stops people from jumping off of bridges (well, maybe that too), but just as a great way to get out of a slightly crappy mood and make the day go better -- a reminder of the goodness and love in people. Sorry to be sappy, but ya have to be to really talk about "Pet Sounds." And, as far as songwriting goes, I don't think one could really say that songs on the "White Album" are better written. There's a lot of great material on there, but every song on "Pet Sounds" is beautifully and expertly crafted (but is it art? ;-)). The production is also amazing -- the blending of tonal colors to create new ones, the use of harmonies (as Joel mentioned), everything! I ain't trying to knock "The White Album." I think it's great. One of my top 3 favorite Beatles albums. But it ain't no "Pet Sounds." Nothing is. - -----Michael K. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Aug 1999 21:14:30 -0800 From: Eb Subject: Re: You think *I* am a record-ranking weenie? Well... ;) Dear daffy Terrence: >> Eb, who still thinks "Ob La Di" is a maddeningly catchy tune (if not >> exactly profound) > >Bah. "Sugar Sugar" was maddeningly catchy too. Yes, and that was a great single too. Not a great *song*, but a great single. It was also the very first song played on my old college-radio station, back in October, 1969. But anyway.... (And these gripes are coming from someone who worships the writer of "Mellow Yellow"?) >I still say that were "Ob La Di" and "Hello Mabel" to have switched albums >before release, the Stanshall tune would still be on the radio today. Oh, so you think a certain song might have been more popular if it had been promoted more. Wow, there's a rarity. >> And yet, almost every artist you've ever touted on the list is *slavishly* >> derivative of the Beatles. Hrm. > >You'd say that about any modern artist. Wake up and smell the java, Terrence. Your musical passions probably show less variety than those of anyone else on the list, and the common thread is Beatles, Beatles, Beatles. Albeit a certain emasculated, wispy version of them.... Quick takes: 1. Beatles/White Album: brilliant. Probably my third favorite Beatles record, after Revolver and Sgt. Pepper. Never worried about the "filler" issue, like other folks. Maybe "Long, Long, Long" could get the axe -- that's about it. Yup, I get a kick out of "Why Don't We Do It in the Road?" and "Wild Honey Pie," and I'm always fascinated by "Revolution #9." Heck, you could've almost stretched this into a triple album, adding "Hey Jude," the rocking "Revolution," "Not Guilty," "Goodbye," "Junk," "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)," "What's the New Mary Jane".... 2. Beach Boys/Pet Sounds: simply godlike, even better than The White Album. I still wonder if *any* of the album's naysayers have substantial knowledge of music theory and chords. I don't want to come off too proggie-woggie here, but I really think this one's a case of "the more you know the more amazing it is." The wonders go a *lot* deeper than mere vocal harmonies. 3. Love/Forever Changes: yes, perhaps a bit overrated. Hasn't aged as well as most other late-'60s "masterpieces." And I've never understood why there's such a wide gap of acclaim between Forever Changes and Love's debut, either. Still, I like the album a lot. It did take awhile for me to warm up to it, though. Then again, it took me awhile to warm up to Pet Sounds, too. 4. Salako/Musicality: fey, frilly, tuneless tripe. Grab a copy while you can, Terrence. ;) Eb, the Lullminator PS Someone on a newsgroup criticized me today for "shying away from any little skirmish." Heh heh heh. np: bad stuff ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V8 #322 *******************************
