Slagging dreadful, nauseating hacks like James Taylor and pitiful has-beens like Sting requires little more than a moment's thought and a sense of fun. Intimidation certainly isn't a prerequisite. Sting at least has a decent back- catalogue, but he's grown increasingly embarrassing. I can't think of a single redeeming quality James Taylor might have, but I'll accept your word that he has one. >Have at Limp Bizkit, if you will, or some other >such tripe: And happily, slagging a pair of lousy old musicians doesn't exclude the possibility of simultaneously slagging a group of godawful young ones like Limp Bizkit. They make Poison look like Yo-yo Ma. Speaking of slagging, as I predicted (but did not expect), JfS is indeed growing on me. I'll make a further prediction: the last song I'll really like will be "Mexican God," which right now seems a yawner of an opener. It will excite me right after "Sweet Mouth" does. If not right before. Second half of JfS still brilliant, "NASA" and "Sea-Tac" much less annoying than they were at first. The good news is that escrow closed today and I got my money. The bad news is that I am an hour and a half north of San Francisco in a little one horse town in a small cramped bedroom with my stuff in boxes and more in storage and my cat asking me, repeatedly, why... I take back anything I said about Robyns voice after Tuesdays in store showing. Wow. Nice little acoustic set, even if rather lax clothing by Mr. H (Nat, Viv and Susan I know you want those details). He wore what appeared to be an old, non descript, dark gray shortsleeved sweatshirt and navy pants (more like pajama pants) with black kung fu shoes. Very played down Robyn. His hair didn't seem to get in the way much but I did notice lots of blinkercise action. He seemed to be in "lounge at home" attire. He definately said November for the J4S promotional tour. Sounded so good. And got better as he went. In Bass (I believe) he forgot some of the lyrics which may be why he started telling the story of the Headmaster who breathed through his mouth. All the other songs got better and better. He seemed to be coaxing Tim to sing in harmony?? In short, he rocked enough that I am not sorry I did not attend the Fillmore shows although they sounded great. A beautiful symmetry for me was that 2 friends who came to the in store with me were the 2 guys who turned me on to RH back in the mid eighties and we used to go to RH concerts together. So somehow it was right I see Robyn for the last time in SF (for a few years) with the 2 people who gave me my first compilation tapes. Oh, I had him sign the J4S cd since all other RH vinyl/cds are packed already. He asked who to and I said "to Ethyl". He asked the spelling and I said I spelled it with a Y. He commented on how in England it is with an E and I said "Oh, it's a psuedonym." His reply? "Oh, how sinister." Am monitoring e-mail from the road here and there. Just two words: Fegs Rule! Happy Motoring, - - carrie ps: promise no lenghty travellouges but am doing so for friends so if anyone is interested, contact me off line. My intinerary includes a meeting with the Long Beach Police Department Historical Association, shooting outside various Arizona city limits, 4 days in a Benedictine monastery with a rule of silence, a week in Aspen in a studio making books, a stop in Omaha to visit Forest Lawn and the grandparents I never met... pps: Am in agreement that Jewels is a B effort and does not replace ME, Eye, Perspex Island to name a few. But I keep returning to it. Dark Princess, Mexican God, Antwoman and Jewels for Sophia stand out. "Questions are a burden for others. Or better, often a commercial will use a similar sounding bit to a popular song. You get some musicians together and use similar instrumentation and mix to some pop song and play roughly in the same key and the same chords, but mix it up just a little or alter the timing a bit. Very common. > Has anyone seen that WB show Charmed? You're kidding me! Now, see... you know that godawful flick The Craft? Well, Charmed, I thought, was obviously capitalizing on the success of that movie with mystical teeny boppers. Well, that movie contained (I think the closing credits) a cover of How Soon Is Now? by The Smoking Popes. It was really bad. > Anyway, I've been wondering if Morrissey or Johnny Marr get any > royalties for this at all. And do they have the right to tell the WB > or Nissan that they can't use the song even though it's not their > version? Morrissey/Marr are usually creditted with songwriting and publishing for smithssongs. If someone covers their tune, they get royalties. But I'm not sure where permission comes in. I was pretty sure that anybody could cover any tune they like, but if they're going to try to make a dime, they have to pay royalties fixed by the publisher. If you're going to use the song for commercial purposes, it's a whole different fee schedule. Generally, fee schedules for commercial tunes are so ridiculously high, the agency just chooses a different track or does the sneaky trick above (as long as lyrics aren't an issue)... or convinces the client to lay out the cash. At W&K, I watched one account supervisor convince Microsoft to spend $40K on a Dean Martin song for a thirty second European spot just because the art directory thought it would be funny. So you never know. But yeah, you need performer and publisher's permission for a song. But it's quite complicated for covers (like permission to play a song on an album vs. permission to promote an album as containing that song). Talking out some nonverbal orifice, I'm sure.
