Mike, do you have a guesstimate of the wide release date? cheers, michelle ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Jul 1999 15:30:25 +0100 (BST) From: Michael R Godwin Subject: Miscellany Paris Sessions Those Paris gig lists look really enjoyable: lots of my favourite RH songs, including ones I thought he had lost interest in - he really is good, you know. Devil Mask, Serpent at the, Heliotrope, Speed of Things, Glass Hotel, Airscape, Dream of Trains, Yip, Wasps, Only the Stones. All he needed to do was to add in 'Birdshead' and it would have been perfect. (All right, I know he can't play 'Airscape' live - only Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians can do that). Imperial Bedroom I went to see Nick Lowe and his band (Cowboy Outfit, probably) at Chippenham Golddiggers in about 1982, supported by the Blasters (all those Fabulous Thunderbirds-style bar bands were over in the UK at that time). Imagine my surprise when the first band on turned out to be Elvis Costello and the Attractions. They went through quite a bit of unreleased stuff from Imperial Bedroom and the material sounded excellent. Unfortunately when the album came out it just didn't sound any good at all to my (admittedly cloth) ears. All those Get Happy-Trust period EC records sound horrible to me - I think he was trying to get a Stax-Volt record sound and failing miserably. Maybe these re-masters will capture more of the sound. I'd've rather listened to 'This Year's Model' or 'Blood and Chocolate' any day - or even 'Armed Forces'. Talking Dogs I don't have any talking dog records, but I do have fond memories of the Fabulous Poodles - Tony de Meur, Bobby Valentino and co. Who could forget the way they opened their act with a gigantic concluding chord, went off stage to cheering, then played the whole of the rest of the set as an encore? If there are Phil Ochs fans out there, there must be Poodles fans. Those conga drums 'I wanna hear Caravan with a drum solo'. OK, I give up. Is it Spike Jones, Stan Freberg, Zappa or even (dread thought) Ray Stevens? ("Get back of the stage, feller"). The only version of Caravan I own is by Les Paul and Chet Atkins - no drums at all. On the drum solos front, there are only 3 contenders as far as Michael is concerned: Ginger Baker (dramatic and structured, especially with Phil Seaman and assorted conga players in Airforce); Arthur Dyre Tripp III ('Ed Marimba') wearing a loin cloth, a Buddha hairdo and a monocle; and Albert Bouchard whacking his way around the kit - the lights dimming down - and then when the lights go up he is _wearing a big Godzilla head_ to play the drum solo!!! I mean, like, hot dog! I think my conclusion is that a drum solo really has to have effective visuals to avoid the mind-numbing boredom of the 45 minute John Bonham solo played with his bare hands. Rain Parade-Bangles links I have got a sort of sampler record from the immediate post-Rain Parade period which features, inter alia, both David Roback and Susanna Hoffs. Can't remember any details but I could check it out if anyone is interested. - - Mike Godwin PS Yes, the track listing is wrong on my Cambridge Folk Fest CD too. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 Jul 1999 09:35:27 -0500 From: Knaurr Subject: Re: Eb's plot unmasked At 05:54 AM 7/2/99 -0700, you wrote: >EXHIBIT A > >said Eb, >>I'm taking my computer to the shop. And then, many months later, when I started listening to Neutral Milk Hotel, I felt like I was betraying Robyn, the same way I...(deep breath)..betrayed Elvis Costello. I mean, how could I?! I will certainly ask him about things political. Possibilities- Ever considered running for public office? Ever considered yourself a politcal songwriter? If you had Tony Blair and some sharp implements in a sound-proof room, what would you do? 3. Imperial Bedroom makes me cry with joy. The opening to Beyond Belief is one of the most intense sounds I've ever heard. Last summer I used to BLAST this out of my roommate's car and just drive around feeling euphoric. And also like a damned fool, because I'd sing along real loud. Hopefully the stereo drowned me out. Now I drive around yelling along with Jeff Mangum and opeing my mouth really wide. The moral of the story is, being seen in a car with me is instant social ostracization. 4. Eb, release Terry and back away slowly. What manner of feg art thou, that can hold hostage an innocent Monkees-loving young boy and force him to utter such vile, ungroovy things? Aren't you ashamed of yourself? 5. Stay tuned for Chicago-gathering details. They involve such unsavory things as 'themes' and 'going overboard.' 6. The Blair Witch Project sounds just like a film I saw at the CUFF (Chicago Underground Film Festival) last summer. It was called The Jersey Devil, and it was supposedly a documentary. I think I've posted about this before. 7. My favorite Robyn-song of the moment: I Don't Remember Guildford. Runner-up: Antwoman.
