Particularly the 26-minute one, which has almost no substance at all through most of its duration. Ween could've made their perverse "F*ck you, we do what we want" point with only *one* extended tune, just as convincingly. 2) A lot of the fun of Ween's Elektra albums is what clever producers/arrangers the Weens are. In a live context (except for the songs from the C&W period), the arrangements are pretty drab...mostly just fuzzy guitar, bass and drums. So that hook is gone. Overall, I'd say that the album is pretty good, but nothing to write home about. Out of the 14 tracks, 7 are fantastic, 2 are mediocre, and the other 5 are...well..really bad! This could have been an incredible album. But on about the half the album, the arrangements, mix, and production is terrible. I can't imagine what they were thinking when they put "A Spoonful Ways a Ton" on there. It's not that the song itself is terrible, it's what they did to it that sucks. And the drums seem to be the most prominent instrument on the album, even overpowering the vocals much of the time. And there's another thing that really bothers me: they put two versions of both "Race For The Prize" and "Waiting for a Superman" on the album. I can't understand why they did that. The two versions of "Race for the Prize" aren't even all that different. On the other hand, the two versions of "Waiting for a Superman" are a really good example of how production and arrangements can affect an album. It's a really great song with a beautiful melody, but the first version almost sucks, whereas the second version is fantastic. And the only major changes they made was adding some soft acoustic guitar, some bass guitar, and lowering the level of the previously overpowering drums. They coproduced the album with Dave Fridman, but IMHO, if they had hired someone different, they might have recorded an amazing album. Instead, we're left with half-amazing or half-shitty, depending on what your outlook on life is. I like to think that it's half-amazing and listen to wonderful songs like "The Spiderbite Song," "Buggin'," and "Race for the Prize" and pass over the shitty ones. So there you go...
