Eeek! >John, you completely misunderstood me. Consumer software is dead in the >sense that its days as a profitable industry are numbered... People are done >buying software... Sorry if I misunderstood. I thought you were talking about the consumer software industry *overall,* whereas I guess you're referring only to the industry *as we know it*, i.e., now, today, where people just have programs that run in stationary boxes and are displayed on big flat screens. That portion of the industry probably *is* on its last legs. I was talking about The Future... But never mind. It's kind of silly that we argue about this stuff. You'll say that things are going to be like so-and-so, and I'll say maybe that would be nice but it's probably not going to happen, at least not the way you think it will. So what? As if anything we say on this list is going to have any effect on what happens. Nevertheless... >I do question this thing about 3D and VR interfaces, though. It's like >the video phone. Sure we COULD do it, but who wants it? ... >I feel this way about "smart homes" as well. I'm just not sure who >wants or needs them... Actually this is talking about hardware now, but since a lot of applications will end up being rewritten, maybe that's just as well. I might argue that lots of people want these things, but that's not really the point. My feeling is that when people say things like this, it scares off the talented and creative people who might otherwise be willing to risk a few million bucks to develop the stuff, and plays right into the hands of people like Bill Gates, who can afford to throw lots of money at speculative development, just in case the market really is there. So instead of having really cool videophones and VR devices and smart homes that work and do useful things, we'll have awful proprietary-interface Microsoft-like videophones and VR devices. Does that mean nobody will want them, just because they're poorly-designed and unreliable? Wait until they see all those spectacular TV commercials that will do their utmost to convince people that their everyday lives are going to be made immeasurably better by the stuff. (Complete with classic-rock backing tracks!) Why, the improvement in cyber-porn alone will probably shift millions of units! The mockery and flagrant abuse of international law by NATO’s political and military leaders evidence that the air strikes must be deemed, as a matter of law, unlawful. I knew it was playing in Wellington and Auckland, and I found out yesterday that it will be played on August 4th at the Metropolis in Dunedin - two sessions, not sure yet of the times, probably 2pm and 8pm, but music movies are often put in the midnight slot, so one of them could be then. Presumably it's also playing in Christchurch. I'll let the list know more info if and when it comes to hand.
