And I'm really becoming impressed with the Elephant 6 Recording Company. NMH, OTC, and the Apples are the only bands I've heard from E6, but they're all great, OTC being my favorite. Aren't those the 3 main bands. Which of the others should I check out? >> Yeah, I'd say those bands are at the heart of it, for sure. Beulah's "When Your Heartstrings Break" should be next on your list. Great pop album - -- good mix of 60's influences and a bit of a 90's indie edge. Nifty E6-type instrumentation throughout. I also really like the Minders' "Hooray For Tuesday." It's *very* 60's pop -- McCartneyesque songwriting. Then there's "Ladybug Transistor," which may or may not be an E6 band. They toured with Of Montreal and Beulah, so they're definitely E6 cousins, if nothing else. They're '99 album, "Ablemarle Sound," is quite good. Sort of like if Stephen Merritt (Magnetic Fields, 6ths) tried to write an album in the vein of the Kinks' "Village Green" -- twee, 60's pastoral/baroque pop, but with really flat vocals. I realize that "flat" isn't a very sexy description, but if you don't mind deadpan vocals, then this is really good music. Those are some of my favorite recent E6 releases, along with the OTC disc. - ------Michael K. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Jun 1999 15:46:09 -0400 From: The Great Quail Subject: Someone sent me this request.... I don't collect bootlegs, but I'd like to start. All I really have are two CDs, the Rob, Bob and Albert one, and one called "Stand Back, Dennis" from the Globe of Frogs tour, with Peter Buck etc., as well as the "Invisible History" comp. But the reason I'm writing to you is that on March 8th I went to see Robyn play Park West while I was living in Albany. The situation was less than steller: a deep snowfall conspired to prevent me from seeing the show. Defying all logic, I made it there, and was surprised (saddened) to find people eating dinner while Robyn played. The signifigance, tho', is that it was a first date with a woman who haunts me to this day. It would really mean a lot to me to get my hands on this tape, and I would offer you any reasonable dollar amount for it, since I'm pretty light on the bootleg side. I also have the Gotta let this hen out video, but, being a fanatic, you probably picked it up long ago. There was an amazing "Lysander": at that show, which made me go back and listen, again, to a song I had never paid much attention to. The Burroughs readings at the beginning and end were pretty cool, too. Of course, there are a host of shows I've seen that I'd like to get my hands on, but I'd appreciate any response regarding this one. By the way, I can't wait for "Jewels...". Its my understanding that Robyn's gonna release a vinyl "side" album, like he did with "Moss/Mossy...". I couldn't beleive he chose the electric "Beautiful Queen" over the one on "Mossy..", and, in a characteristically frustrating way, Moss Elixer could've been even better had he extended it 20 minutes, say. But now I'm just bitching. Anyway, like I said, any response would be appreciated. I know I have been very silent for a while . . . but I have a good reason, and a happy one! As of Bloomsday -- last Wednesday, June 16th -- I have been essentially working for myself! It's finally official, and I am now Vice President of Bibliotech, Inc, and CEO/Editor of the Libyrinth. Needless to say, my life has been a bit hectic lately, but by early July I should be in some kind of sensible routine. The best thing is that I get to work at home, with LJ! So if I wasn't able to sing all of Oasis' catalog by heart, I am sure I'll soon be able. . . not to mention following all the intricate plot lines of the Victor Newman Show. But that's ok, I promise that LJ will get a steady dose of the Dead, ELP, and reruns of Doctor Who. Heh heh. So I won't bore you with details, but the gist of it is that the Libyrinth is now my *job.* I think this is pretty neat, even though I have to start reading things like "Business for Dummies" and I may actually have to buy a suit so no one laughs at me when I go to scary business meetings. But hey, if the compensation is working in my underwear for most of the week, that's fine with me! So anyway, I just wanted to pass along the news . . . plus I wanted Eddie to know that I have now entered the full-fledged world of capitalism, so I feel that I may owe him a beer or two. And after I get settled down a bit in July, I may get back to posting a lot again, letters full of fun facts about string quartets and surreal excursions into Woj's lingerie closet.
