MOA is great fun, alright, but I sure didn't expect surf music! When I described it as such to my brother-in-law-the-alternative-rock-dj-and- music-encyclopedia, he was surprised. Robyn isn't playing Highbury Fields. Boy, did I get excited for a while. I might still pop along to see the wonderful Mr Hegley though. Apparently Robyn was supposed to be playing with Peter Blegvad the next night as well, but, yup, he's still Down Under. Also Michael is right about the British release date. There I was crowing about Britain getting the album a whole day before America and it turns out that it's coming out at least a month later here, and he probably won't be touring the UK until the autumn. I do believe he's playing Paris later this month, does anyone know more details about this? I'll try and find out more anyway. Just a quick comment about Eb's recent 'ehhhs'. I think David Thomas's new album is excellent: multi-layered, atmospheric and for a live recording superbly produced. It features performances from Jackie Leven, Linda Thompson and the criminally underrated Kidney Brothers. I agree about London Suede (it's so cute when you Yanks do that...) and Whistler. The latter supported London Robyn Hitchcock at his last ,er, London show, and came across as smug and rather dull. Much better than the mediocre new album, but that's to be expected since the band was drawing from their full catalog. The Palladium's sound system was a major problem...the drums and bass were distorted and overbearing within those cavernous acoustics, and frequently overwhelmed the piano. I dug that the group didn't play "Brick" -- ha. A nice f*ck-you to the new fans. I wondered if the live ensemble would be expanded with a string/horn player or three, but no. Just a quick walk-on flugelhorn solo during "Don't Change Your Plans." The only instrumental differences from the show I saw three years ago were that the bassist now dabbles with Moogy bass synthesizers, and Ben had two pianos: one "normal," one with a more tack/honky-tonk tone. I was thinking that the drummer would make a good stunt double for Jon Stewart, in the unlikely case that he needs one. I was hoping there might be a surprise cover song or two, but no on that count as well. Ben Lee opened. He was...OK. A stronger voice than I expected -- I guess the kid is growing up. Off-the-wall celeb in the audience: the lead singer of the Knack. Yeesh. Since new releases have been slow lately, I've been in a collection-pruning mood. Hence, I'm officially moving Madder Rose, Blinker the Star, Veruca Salt, the Lime Spiders and Meryn Cadell from the ahhh list to the ehhh list. ;) More to come, I think. The Dream Syndicate may be next. Or Bazooka. Or UT. Or Old Skull. Or Michelle Shocked.... Last night, I read that the Folk Implosion are now signed to Interscope? Huh. News Entertainment Headlines Friday June 11 06:31 PM EDT Goodbye, Dr. McCoy DeForest Kelley, who as Star Trek's folksy spaceman Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy frequently issued the dire (and trademark), "He's dead, Jim," diagnosis, died today at the Motion Picture and Television Fund Hospital in Woodland Hills, California. He was 79. Kelley was pronounced dead at 12:15 p.m. Longtime friend and producer A.C. Lyles told reporters the star had been confined to the hospital for three months, suffering from a "lingering illness." Kelley is the first major member of the USS Enterprise's original on-air crew to pass away. Franchise creator Gene Roddenberry died in 1991. Actor Mark Lenard, a familiar face in the series and movies as Mr. Spock's Vulcan father, died in 1996. With William Shatner's Captain Kirk and Leonard Nimoy's Mr. Spock, Kelley's Bones McCoy formed the original Trek's holy troika. They were the three guys who got the biggest storylines, the best billing, the most money and the clearest shots at post-Trek careers. "He represented humanity and it fitted him well," Nimoy said today in a statement. "He was a decent, loving, caring partner and will be deeply missed." Kelley costarred as Bones on the 1966-69 NBC series and in six Trek movies--from 1979's Star Trek: The Motion Picture to 1991's Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, the last to feature the entire original cast. Flowers were to be placed tonight on Kelley's Hollywood Walk of Fame star. He was born January 20, 1920, in Atlanta, Georgia. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Carolyn, who was being treated at the same hospital as her spouse for a broken leg and other complications.
