"I can't really explain it without giving it away. Some people will know the song, some die-hards. But the majority of people will not know it, and nobody will know of this song in the form in which it's coming. As to whether anyone's going to be disappointed, I don't think so. A lot of people will be delighted and surprised. I don't think there will be a hanging party for me in October." ICE, however, confirmed it'll be "Hey Bulldog." And regarding Baker's clue of "Nothing Is Real," the movie advertising for YS had the phrase "Nothing Is Real" on it. So methinks Baker's was trying to throw us off. Sorry, Geoff, it didn't work. Bah humbug. Eddie's a filmaker? Or were we talking about Ken? :P But, speaking of America's best working director, David Lynch, if anyone (Joel, I love you, man) wants further insight into "Lost Highway," they should read the Philip K. Dick short story "Retreat Syndrome." Some eerie parallels. I forgot to mention that before, when LH was an official topic, and just remembered it this long (in the US) weekend. And, speaking of the long weekend, I spent Sunday night watching Elvis Costello and Steve Nieve perform. Well, I only *saw* Elvis, as I was in the third row, on the farthest left, and my view of Attraction Steve was completely blocked by a stack o' speakers. They played lots of material from "Painted From Memory," which worked surprisingly well stripped down to just a piano and vocals. The rest of the concert was a nice selection of ol' time Costello favorites and such, as well as a brand new song written as a collaboration between Elvis and Steve - the first in some 20 odd years. "I Want You," as always, brought goose bumps. "She," from the Notting Hill soundtrack, was nice and torchy. Elvis mainly played an acoustic guitar, but pulled out a hollow-body electric for the the third, and final, encore. Nieve mainly stuck to piano, but played a little organ... or an organ sound on a synth. Again, I couldn't see. They ended with "Pump it Up," which pumped, even without the bass or drums. During "God's Comic," EC slammed Charleton Heston and the NRA, and poked a wee bit of fun at the "blame the media" idiocy currently sweeping America. Fun stuff. - --Jason "this snakeskin jacket symbolizes my individuality and belief in personal freedom" Thornton ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Jun 1999 11:14:25 PDT From: "Capitalism Blows" Subject: credit where it's due some of you may recall that i have "issues" with the pope. however, his strong stand against this fucking war is to be commended. in case you missed it, he called the war "a heavy defeat for humanity", and urged that, "dialogue, solidarity, and love prevail over many forms of pride and lies." testify, pontiff! _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. This arrival is expected to top the '89 quake in terms of magnitude and devastation. I have been horribly buried by the huge sucking sound of the vortex of great suction that is known as the place of my employ of late, so I haven't been able to fortify the plates in the crust as I had hoped. Also, I haven't succeeded in doing anything to create another big blowout party (like it's 1999) for them. I expect to be rather busy in the coming weeks with work and putting the finishing touches on the Cecil B. Demile version of "Raymond Chandler Evening," including fatal chariot races and millions of extras, and producing a friend's version of "Birdshead." I have been hogging many of the festivities when there are jet-setting feg MVPs in town. Would anyone like to host a fegparty that week? Does meeting these folx sound like a good time to enjoy the new slightly higher fares of the major airlines to visit? We'll even throw in some Bay Area Fegs to boot (or whatever you think is appropriate.) I still hope to be able to put Q+lj up at la casa de los gatos locos en aptosia for any amount of their stay en california. I also hope to butter up the Quail to get him to purchase Tigermonkey with his filthy corporate cash and give me a job as the head music geek in the continuing saga of _The Evil Quail that Ate the Dark, Dark Evil Umpire Before the Return of the Jetta in the Shadows in the Night of the Living Libyrinth or Something Something or Other Like That or Not, But No, Much Darker Than That, Really_. I'd happily sell him some of my intellectual property rights- I'm sure there's some humor in that last phrase. This isn't far away, as you can see that our crack, and we do mean crack, agents have informed us that our feathered fiend and our favored furred bunny girl are arriving on the 23rd and departing on the 30th of this month of June. They will be attending an opera that is running all week, but I have assured them that it will only seem like it takes a week to see it. I understand that our guests will be available for much of the time they are here, and I'd like them to have a wonderful time. Please think up lots of fun things to do, and we'll try to have more than one event, so multiple fegs can see lj get whatshisname to perform stupid hmuh tricks. I have asked Dusty to play with the bird, but not to eat him. That said, I will recommend that he avoid the "Anchovy" Old Spice cologne that he wears for Wall St. fatcats. Well, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it. I went to absurd lengths to make certain that I patronized one of my favorite local bookstores in purchasing this tome, and all of them had dreadfully underestimated the demand for it. But 23rd Avenue Books eventually came through for me. The wait FOR the book will be nothing next to the time that it will take me to get THROUGH the book, anyway. And it's only volume one. I've made a pretty good dent in it so far, I'm up to page 125 after two days of reading (I'm not a particularly speedy reader). I've enjoyed it a great deal, but the most striking thing about it is the number of themes and notes that Stephenson touches on that rhyme with my own recent history. Now, I'm not psychotic or naive or self-centered enough to actually draw any kind of conclusions about these little coincidences, I just wanted to put you in mind of the kind weird and slightly disorienting experience reading this book has been for me. I won't give ANY spoilers away, don't worry, but here are a couple examples (among many): * One of the characters is one Corporal Shaftoe, and the book goes into detail about his first sushi experience. I just tried sushi for the first time less than a month ago, and no, I can't stop talking about it. (Thanks Jeme!) * Pages 80-85 pretty clearly (and directly) disparage a point of view that I spent a great deal of effort illustrating and defending on this very list back in February. (and yes, I'm enjoying the book anyway.) * The following passage, in particular (I apologize in advance for Stephenson's use of racial slur, it makes sense in the context of the book): ...The lieutenant with the pompadour leans forward now, instinctively seeking the light, like a traveler on a cold winter's night. It is that guy from the movies. What's-his-name. Oh, yeah! Ronald Reagan has a stack of three-by-five cards in his lap. He skids up a new one: 'What advice do you, as the youngest American fighting man ever to win both the Navy Cross and the Silver Star, have for any young Marines on their way to Guadalcanal?' Shaftoe doesn't have to think about it very long. The memories are still as fresh as last night's eleventh nightmare: ten plucky Nips in Suicide Charge! 'Just kill the one with the sword first.' 'Ah,' Reagan says, raising his waxed and penciled eyebrows, and cocking his pompadour in Shaftoe's direction. 'Smarrrt -- you target them because they're officers, right?' 'No, fuckhead!' Shaftoe yells. 'You kill 'em because they've got fucking swords! You ever had anyone running at you waving a fucking sword?' Reagan backs down. He's scared now, sweating off some of his makeup, even though a cool breeze is coming in off the bay and through the window. Now, I don't know about you, but I just had to laugh upon reading this exchange. The last bit in particular made me think of a particularly beloved personage on this list. If you know who I'm thinking of, the thought of him in Shaftoe's place, getting interviewed by *Ronald Reagan* (of all people) is, well, just too surreal for words. - -Michael ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Jun 1999 15:28:38 +1200 From: digja611@student.otago.ac.nz (James Dignan) Subject: A concert of kings as the white sea snaps >"Emily" & "Floyd"...hmmm. >"Dennis" & "Katrina"...double hmmm. > >Mike "wondering which one will hit here" Runion has to be said, I'm afraid, but anyone on the coast during the last of these four had better watch out for violent waves. South FL fegs?) even remotely interested in going, tickets can be ordered via phone at (407) 629-TKTS. Since it's part of the Florida Film Festival, and the Enzian is a very cool but relatively small place, I'd suggest ordering by phone. You can call noon to 6pm from today (June 3) to June 19, and tickets will be "will call" at the Enzian box office. I'll be there with about 5 other people in tow, only one or two even remotely aquainted with RH. It's a Saturday midnight show, so we'll be out and about town during the early evening if anyone wants to try and meet up. Email me! I don't believe there are advance tickets for the Colonial Promenade show on Sunday, so that'll be a show up and buy sorta deal. Unless I'm just completely underwhelmed by the first showing, I'll be at this one as well. By the way, the website with info is at: HTTP://WWW.FLORIDAFILMFESTIVAL.COM/fff/films/docs/storefront.html Okay, back to it... In fact, Woody even makes a cameo appearance. Anyone who likes early Woody Allen will love this movie. It's great! It starts off a little slow but once it gets going, it's wonderful. There are a lot of those physical comedy scenes set to music that Woody Allen did so much in his early years. And the entire cast is great too. Campbell Scott is especially funny and Lili Taylor and Steve Buscemi are terrific as always. If you liked Buscemi's scenes in The Wedding Singer, then you'll be happy to see him take the stage again for some more singing with a hilarious outcome. Anyway, I definitely recommend this movie. It's just a lot of fun. Later Joel ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V8 #198 *******************************
