I know I should just ask the nice fellow who runs the Robyn Hitchcock Museum site, but I thought you folks might know the answer too. In the "photographs" link on this page, there's a picture entitled "Courtesy of Lifetime." It's a picture of Robyn standing on a nicely manicured lawn. He's a bit hard to see in the shade. He's propping up a big, oil painting of a posh-looking woman (of a "certain age") with big hair. It's a realistic looking portrait, certainly not his own style. Is this a painting of Lal or Fleur's? Is the woman in the painting his mother? It kind of looks like an aging romance book writer. This is an awfully curious photo, at any rate. ..if you haven't a clue what I'm writing about, here's the URL: www.robynhitchcock.com/courtesylifetimephoto.htm Any frivolous or serious replies are welcome. I haven't written anything to the list in a week or so. I've been subbing to a ton of lists and newsgroups lately, just to see what's goin' on in the rest of the world. Anyway, I thought I'd just post a little "music that I've been liking lately" email. Black Heart Procession's "2" (surprised, Natalie? they actually sent me a promo!). This is a pretty cool album, although not very good for summer listening. There's a lot of organ and accordion. Kinda dark and sorta folksy, but not in a "on the back porch with a gee-tar" way. Trumpet on a few tracks. I like the lyrics. They seem really honest. Musically, I'd compare it to Palace and some of the darker E6 stuff -- NMH and OTC. I may have mentioned this before, but the new Beulah album is just great! E6 pop at its finest! I've only given the forthcoming Rachel's one listen, but I liked it quite a bit. It's pretty and pensive and strikes a nice balance between the more traditional classicism of "Music for Egon Schiele" and the more avant nature (from what little I remember!) of "The Bells" (is that even the right title?). Anyway, as you might guess, the only one I own is "Egon Schiele," so I don't have as educated an opinion on them as I'd like, but my initial impression of the new one (6/8, btw) is that it's quite good. Frank Black and the Catholics "Pistolero." Again, only one listen so far. Good stuff! It's the first album I've heard by him in some time that caught my ear at all. At the very least, I think it'll be a fun album to listen to for a few months. The forthcoming Apples in Stereo EP ("Her Wallpaper Reverie, out 6/8) is just okay. There are a few good songs and a few others that are just tweakings of sound, which OTC do *way* better. Someone told me that Rob and Hillarie are getting married soon and so they didn't devote as much time to recording as they otherwise might have. That'd make a good excuse. Aw, those sweet kids! Best o' luck to ya! I still really like the Snakefarm album. If you haven't checked it out yet, then you're missing out! "Songs for My Funeral" is the name. That's it for music reviews. Since Liz and I saw "Phantom Menace" earlier today, I thought I'd mention how much I liked it. Made me feel like a little kid again! The only thing I didn't like was the underwater rabbit rasta-talkin' creatures . . . but I expected that going in. I did, however, like them better than Ewoks, so that was nice. And, based on what a lot of people have said, I liked the acting of the little kid who played Annkin better than I'd expected and thought the writing was better than people had said. I was expecting it to be particularly bad. Anyone who has any criticisms didn't pay attention to the earlier Star Wars movies, if you ask me. It's all been pretty sophomoric and heavy-handed. This was about the same. The visuals were amazing! All in all, I liked it a ton and can't wait for the next one. There seems to be a good set-up for an "Empire"-ish training-a-Jedi kind of movie next time around; maybe a little darker and less battles and stuff. Anyway . . . woo-hoo! - -----Michael K. ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V8 #195 *******************************
