Huh. I have about 500 CDS, and the reason I do alphabet is precisely - -because- I have so many. The more complicated a system I had, the more I would go mad trying to figure out what was supposed to go where. Not to mention that in the old place, for quite awhile the only place we had to put them was in the stereo cabinet. Shoved back there in the cabinet like that it was much easier for me to know which letter stack I had to pull out to find something, than to try to remember where x kind of stack was. The LPs are done differently, because his'n'hers have to share a crate, and the SO doesn't share my taste in filing systems. There's more than one reason this is a good thing- much as it pains me to admit I'm this petty, the truth is I really DON'T want anyone being under the misapprehension that those Chase LPs belong to me. MARKEEFE: >But if you're in the mood only for vocal jazz, but you're not exactly >sure *which* vocal jazz CD you might want to put on? Errr.....uhmmm.....I kinda don't really get this. I rarely get in the mood for kinds of things. I get in the mood for specific artists or a particular album. I don't want to hear vocal jazz per se. If I want to hear Abbey Lincoln, I want to hear Abbey Lincoln, not Joe Williams, Sarah Vaughan, Betty Carter, or whoever. It appears that once again, this is probably just me. >ridiculous pretty easily. The classic vs. current rock artists segregation >scheme you mentioned, for instance, seems pretty silly. I'll tell Doug you said that :). It makes sense to him, and he's the main user of his own collection, so it's all good- the problem was that I was the person "executing the commission", so to speak, and I was a bit peeved because I thought said commission was ridiculous. One headache over which of the two categories Dave Edmunds should go in is one more headache I don't really need. Especially when someone answers "well, put it wherever you want, I don't care", which really means "I don't care now, but when I need to find it, I'll grump about where you put it" :). It's mostly just that, during dinner, it's nice to listen to some vocal jazz, so I'll scan through that section and pull something out while setting the table. Or, when doing housework, it's nice to listen to some classical music, so, again, I'll kinda scan through (mostly Bach, Mozart or Vivaldi) and grab the most immediately appealing selection. But, when I'm listening to music just to listen to music, yeah, it's to listen to a very certain artist or album. - -----Michael K. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 May 1999 14:35:53 -0700 From: Joel Mullins Subject: Murder Hey, has anyone seen Neil Simon's Murder By Death? I saw quite a few times when I was a kid and last night I guess I was feeling nostalgic for my childhood and watched it again. Pretty funny movie. Mostly despicable characters; no one you actually could like. Pretty well written I thought. Ah well... Regarding mentions of "Star Wars" and "Lust For Life", we picked up "Velvet Goldmine" on video this weekend. I'm not sure yet if I liked it a lot or just thought "eh". Ewan McGregor did a great job as the Iggy Pop character, Kurt Wilde (was that his name?), and at times was the spitting image of Kurt Cobain. He had his Iggy moves down pat and did a fairly fine rendition of "Gimme Danger". The movie itself was sorta hodge-podge all over the place...it felt like it didn't have a great deal of direction, as in a point...except maybe to adore and slag off Bowie at the same time. Tried to rent "Happiness" at our local Nutbuster. Didn't have it. The clerk told my wife that he saw it and that it was sorta sick and extreme and that we probably wouldn't like it. I was fuming! This prick doesn't even know us! I kept my mouth shut as we were renting "Velvet Goldmine". He said "Now, this movie is good! I even bought the soundtrack". Jeeeez-us! Maybe this little episode tainted the movie for me. I don't know... Back to work, Mike n.p. some of my own stuff done through a PA, and dreaming about a full studio "sound". ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V8 #182 *******************************
