Well, if I walk into a gun shop, buy a gun, and turn around and sell it to someone on the street; that's illegal, for you buying it and me selling it, but maybe that's a California thing. Guns have to be sold through a dealer with an license from the ATF. But the reality is a bit different, isn't it? Someone breaks in a house, steals the handgun in the drawer by the bed, then sells it on the street where it's used to hold up a lady putting groceries in the car on a wednesday afternoon. So she gets scared and goes out and legally buys a handgun which gets stolen from the drawer beside her bed... Last year, the FBI hooked all the legal gun dealers up to a system where they can check quickly and thouroughly everyone who requests to buy a handgun. It has proved to be very effective and has snared many a would be undesirable from buying. I suspect the place that will feel the hit the most from Colorado will be the gun shows. In Texas, you can buy a gun at a gun show and walk out with it. No registration. In California, you can only walk out of a shop or show with an "antique" weapon, pre 1945 I believe and even then you have to have proper ID which is recorded by the seller. And that only applies to rifles, never handguns. 2 week wait on all handguns. (*note* with the Y2K scare coming, the lines for purchasing handguns are gonna get long come September...). Well, in the 7+ years I've been making games I've never heard anyone talk about how good a shot this is gonna make the kids who play it. Maybe it's because alot of the people making the games spend unhealthy amounts of time playing these same violent video games and they don't have the urge to go postal (and frankly, I'm surprised. I mean we work insane hours, get laid off if the company had a bad quarter and watch marketing choose the worst box art for what's really a great looking game inside...). Most of the hardcore gamers and Quake players I know are normal, balanced people lacking a little sunlight in their life, who seem to get a cathartic release from playing Quake at the end of the day. I have 2 nerf pistols on my desk - does this mean I am suspect and should be watched? The intent I know that goes into games is to make good gameplay with great graphics, at least the intent from those making the games. But the real intent, in all entertainment, is to make something that will make lots of money in the short shelf life it'll have - whether it's a movie or a game. OK, what am I trying to say in this way too long and sorta all over the map post is that blaming the music or the games that these kids listened to or played is addressing the symptoms, not the problem. This is a violent country, born out of a revolution and the wild west. The violence in our culture was here, it's just now hi-tech and media hyped. And that, in my opinion, is one of the biggest problems. The media. Sensationalist journalism. News to make ratings. OK, end of rant. This is way off the line from Robyn Hitchcock. I am breaking, slowly my 5 week obsession with his music. And after I pick up the new Waits tomorrow...right Eb? Man, Heathers is one of my favorite black comedies! I don't particularly like assholes, and everything I've read about Lou Reed leads me to believe that he's kind of an asshole. But I still like his music. Same goes for John Cale who once left the bar in Denton, TX that he was supposed to play, without playing and with all the money his fans had generously paid for the tickets. The bar had to refund everyone's tickets out of their own money, which came very close to putting them out of business. That was a pretty shitty thing to do but that doesn't change the fact that John Cale's music is great. Saying that a homophobic person shouldn't like Queen just because Freddie Mercury was gay is just idiotic, and I mean that with as much respect as possible. Aside from the fact that most of Robyn's actual *songs* aren't overtly political, and that almost anyone can appreciate the humor and the multitudinous hooks in Robyn's material despite not agreeing with his personal philosophy, isn't it just because the concerns of American reactionaries (or libertarians, or whatever) are different from those of British reactionaries? I'm obviously generalizing and oversimplifying, but it seems British reactionaries seem to be concerned mainly with bashing immigrants and homosexuals and people who say bad things about the Queen, whereas American reactionaries are mostly just concerned about taxes, abortion, and guns. Anyway, American right-wingers can listen to "Veins of the Queen" and not be offended in the slightest - why should they? A guy from my neighborhood when I was a kid was a HUGE Queen fan, and he was also the most right-wing person I've ever known, including the people I've met *since* moving to rural Illinois, which is saying quite a lot, I can assure you. But this guy wasn't a homophobe at all; in fact he was one of the few people in the school I went to who actually stuck up for the one or two gay kids who had the guts to be open about it. I guess my point here is that there's a tendency for people at either end of the "political spectrum" to paint people on the opposing end with an overly wide brush (which I probably did in the previous paragraph, but anyway). Just another reason why we should stop taking such a linear view of politics... but we've been over that already. And I could always be wrong.
