There was clear indication that the date of hospitalization of Mr. Spence was 1999. Under most circumstances this indicates a tempered, but definite, sign of life, opposed to death. Also, hospitals rarely admit the dead as patients. Finally, it makes my musing that he may have died last year difficult, unless he was reborn as some sort of undead-type that needed occasional hospitalization or other medical maintenance that the living often seek. Prepare for much raw material with which fun can be made at my expense. Robyn was playing at school auditorium/church, and I attended with several people, all of whom I lost in the mad rush for seating. I ended up on a pew all by myself, but with a very good view. There were about 100-120 people there. I knew Eddie was there, but I never saw him. So Robyn came out, and not only did he have piercing blue eyes (which made him look like an ex-boss of mine, which made me laugh loudly), but he was wearing braces. Not the variety that go on your shoulders, nor those that go on your legs. Teeth. He had braces. He talked for a while, was very amusing, and then did some songs. After about two or three songs, he got up on the stage and announced that they were going to put on a play. So Andy and Morris and the remaining members of R.E.M. got up on stage, and began to set up for a play. When everything was set up, the stage had a table and chairs on it, and behind that a jury box with a very high back. They took their places (all in the jury box). It was decided that Mike Mills had to go on an adventure, and he climbed over the back of the jury box, and came out around it and into the audience. Nothing more came of that plot line. At that point, the action centered on the table. Not that any people sat at the table, or did things with the table. The table itself, which was originally green (and stationary) began to move about of its own accord, and more shockingly, to change colors. It was clearly a painted wooden table, nothing hi-tech, I could see the grain of the wood, but it just changed colors like a chameleon. Groovy. It was time for an intermission, and a guy stood at the left front of the auditorium to collect object for Robyn to sign. Everybody raced to front, waving their well-planned curios. I thought, 'oh shit. I never prepare for this. Maybe he can sign one of my old notebooks.' So I rifled through my bag, which miraculously contained every notebook I've ever written in, and chose one circa junior high that I thought was charmingly naive. I flipped through it, and saw that I had later gone back and used it in college. So, wanting to make that clear, I tried to write across the top of it, 'Some entries written while in college,' but my pen wasn't working. I gave it to the guy anyway, who was just disappearing backstage to hand over the stuff, and that's when I ran into Morris, who was a)extremely short, and b)eating long thin strips of wood. I asked him why on earth he was doing that, and he answered me (as though I were very stupid), that it was the only thing that helped his digestive problem. I noticed he was washing the wood down with gin. I went back out to my seat, but the show hadn't started yet, so I looked around for people I knew. Lo and behold, there was Felicity. So I said, "You know, I like your show." She looked at me, smiled, and said thank you as though she didn't believe me. Her skin was kind of ruddy and of poor quality, which made me feel reassured, and so we began to talk a little. Then I noticed the guy lying on the floor next to the pew. I talked to him for awhile too. I think we talked about shoe-laces. Then the show started again, only this time the audience were sitting on the stage, which was much larger. I had somehow gotten in the first row, and we were all wearing bizarre make-up. I was thinking that I had laid it on too thick, but everyone else looked ridiculous too, so I didn't feel out of place. The table was center-stage again, it was stationary, and Robyn was busy placing papier maiche replicas of the pumpkin heads on the '76-'81 Soft Boys cover (just the heads, though) around the table. The pumpkin heads floated in the air just above the chairs. And then they all picked up their instruments and began playing. In the middle of a song, Robyn looked at me, and held out his hand, and said, "Oh, hello. How are you doing?" I answered him something, and he pulled me up by my hand and continued talking to me as he began to dance with me. I was very clumsy, but he apparently found it charming, as he then began to...kiss...me (this is so embarrassing, but you all deserve the truth)...at any rate, he looked like himself at this point, no braces, no blue eyes. All I could think was "Isn't he supposed to be playing now? I wonder if everybody is pissed." And then the 'concert' was suddenly over, they had all left, and I went to retrieve my notebook. Inside was written something on the order of 'It was great seeing you again, we should keep in touch. I think email would be the proper way.' The end.
