Even though my alarm didn't go off at 11:45 like I planned, I woke up anyway, perhaps mysteriously drawn to Robyn through my unconscious mind... I liked the song, though it was hard to get a good impression of it because it was obviously a full-length song cut down to 1 minute, rather than a song that was intended to be 1 minute long. When time was up, Robyn looked anxious, broke off abruptly, and shut his mouth very tight. Probably someone in the studio was standing there with a stopwatch and a shotgun. For those of you concerned about Robyn's hair (and I know I am), it's now quite shaggy, but as long as he doesn't grow big scraggly Neil Young chops, he should be OK. n., happy to see Robyn on TV ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Mar 1999 05:23:53 -0800 From: "Russ Reynolds" Subject: rod hull >> Half Man Half Biscuit had a song which a) described how I felt about >> Rod Hull, and b) is no longer true. I always thought a great idea for a sitcom would be one that takes place in a bar. People from all walks of life could come into that bar and have experiences that most people would have elsewhere. There could be weddings, funerals, family reunions, business meetings, political campaigns...pretty much any life event you can think of could take place in that bar. And of course you could have a whole cast of "regulars" who are there drinking beer all the time but never get drunk, except for one mailman who THINKS he's drunk one time when he's drinking non-alcoholic beer, and none of them are alcoholics except the bartender who doesn't drink. You could even have a couple of respected psychiatrists spend all their time in there drinking beer. Then the psychiatrists could divorce and one of them could move to Seattle and switch to white wine and live with his father who is an ex-policeman but who looks exactly like a hackneyed song writer who once tried to write a jingle for that bar back in Boston but the psychiatrist never noticed the resemblence. I am writing to ask a wee question. I am currently working on a thingie for one of my Web sites, and one of my ideas requires a list of "lost" books -- actual works of fiction, poetry, religious texts, or even musical scores that have been "lost" to us. I don't mean imaginary works, but works that we are pretty sure at one time existed and even have the titles for. I can't think of any group of people more knowledgeable or eclectic, so I though I would ask here. So if you have some extra time, and you know of a few possible "lost" works, could you please email me privately? He had a couple hits in the '70s and maybe the early '80s (Ariel, McDonalds Girl) and then sort of disappeared for a while. I think a couple bands have recently covered McDonalds Girl (the original was banned by the BBC at the time because it mentioned the fast-food chain's name in the chorus). I always liked him for his a) quirky voice, b) clever lyrics, and c) all-over-the-map arrangement style. Sure, he penned such grind-your-molars-down-to-the-nubs ballads as Lydia, but he also did a song called Funny Papers which is a dead-on Bobby Short/Mel Torme jazz trio thing that really cooks. There was something for everybody on each of his albums, and I think that's what killed him with the record companies. That and the fact that he still writes songs like Hale Bop She Bop. What in merry hell has caused two unrelated lists to suddenly wax lyrical on the same subject almost simultaneously, as far as I know I'm the only feg on that list and I did not mention Kazoos, although I have good reason to. Way back in the mists of time I invented a strange hybrid instrument known as a Dlanghorn , this consisted of a piece of copper tubing bent into a saxophone shape , with a bell shaped piece of copper that I found in the our studio at the art college affixed to the end , the mouth pice was an upturned metal Kazoo. I played this weird hybrid several times in a trio and we were given standing ovations ( not due to my playing , but mainly due to the guitar player, who was a fantastic musician ) . The only disadvantage with the dlanghorn was that the kazoo used to fill up with spittle , due to its upended nature and thus the sound deteriorated after a few minutes of constant playing , sounding somewaht glutenous in its later stages but if any free spirits want to recreate it in all its glory, go ahead, because verilly, it was the king of Kazoos. Possibly a drain tap to catch the fluid would improve its performance. ? Anyway back to this strange synchronicity. The phenomenon is just too frequent for it to be a coincidence. I forgot who asked, but: For very light 60's pop there's Herman's Hermits - a best of shouldn't be too hard to find. In the realm of psychedelic 60's rock, I would recommend The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, formed around 1964. Their sound ranges from heavier psych stuff to light pop-y tunes (or light-sounding songs w/heavy subject material) and is definitely different. Experimental is a good word. Not easy to come by these days, but I have the 1986 vinyl compilation _Transparent Day_. Would've typed the blurb on the back but got tired just looking at it - long w/small print. Went surfing & found it on the web, along with a good informative site. Check it out: http://www.cybercomm.nl/~keeslely/wcpaeb.html I'm pretty sure their stuff is not currently in production, so if you can't find anything & would like a listen, I could dub you a copy of my analog cassette copy of my LP. Track listing: Shifting Sands, I Won't Hurt You, 1906, the innocent-sounding yet sinister Will You Walk With Me, Transparent Day, the very wierd Leiyla, Here's Where You Belong, High Coin, Suppose They Give a War and No One Comes, Buddah, Smell of Incense, Overture - WCPAEB Part II, Carte Blanche, If You Want This Love and Help I'm a Rock (yes, it's a 1968 cover of the Zappa song - heard this version first & love it!). I also have Tomorrow (though Neil/Nigel Planer's cover of _My White Bicycle_ was more fun, IMO) and Steve Hillage's _L_, both also on vinyl & analog cassette copies.
