It appeared on Rhino's "UK Pop II", and "Anglepoise Lamp" appeared on a volume in the associated series, "UK Punk I". I know, lame. I tried, though. (Why do I do > these things to myself??) Conclusions... pretty much the same as before. Picked up the new OTC disc last weekend at Criminal Records up in Atlanta (along with the Ladybug Transistor disc and the new Beth Orton, which seemed sorta blah and repetitive on first listen, but which is now really growing on me with repeated listenings!). Anyway, as with _Dusk_, I haven't been able to handle the whole album in one sitting. I agree with Eb regarding his first spin of the disc, and am hoping it grows on me. Sorta erratic at the moment. The fizzly sound paintings are starting to annoy me, and I'm not sure if in a good way or a bad way yet. I did pick up the _Hideaway_ single, which has a pretty cool liver version of "Can You Come Down With Us?" Anyone out there have those "Opera House" singles, the ones where you play 'em simultaneously to get a quadrophonic music sculpture, or something like that? They had those a Wax & Facts, but I didn't pick 'em up. By the way, do an ebay search on Olivia Tremor Control. Some early 7-inchers are going for OUTRAGEOUS sums of money! Mike n.p. His work gets lumped in with Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen, and that works, in that it's piano-based, sung with gruffness, irony, and loads of character, and carries marvelous lyrics (Conte almost always records in Italian, but his CD booklets include translations into 4 or 5 other languages). But it's more jazz-derived, the singing is more tuneful (not that that's a criticism of the other two), and as a lyricist he's more of an imagist than a storyteller, more of a painter than a dramatist, more of a windowcleaner than a windowdresser, more of a picklewidget than a featherfork. He also looks like Jazz From Hell-era Frank Zappa, only slightly grayer (hair and otherwise). Anyway. Conte breaks into kazoo solos now and then. La. Speaking of Zappa, there's some kazooing on early Mothers records too, I believe -- it's credited on "The Big Squeeze" from THE LOST EPISODES, but I'm almost certain it's kazoo on "You're Probably Wondering Why I'm Here," among others. This was our first time catching Vic, and I was in sheer heaven. The show was laid back in the sense that it was a very spare stage, lots of joking, cursing, and dead-time while Vic tried vainly to get the dang capo on his electric guitar...and his set list paper kept slipping off his amp. No songs from any of Vic's albums (!) but a few seemed to be familiar to the local audience, including a cool jokey one about a grandma that name-checked funky southern city names like Apalachicola. Kevn did several songs of his third solo album which is due shortly, as well as a bunch off his first two and a DnC song or two. They did a joint set together to end the show, and the encore was a splendidly demented version of "Love Me Do". Anyway, Vic is supposed to be opening for Wilco on their coming tour, so it'll be cool to see him in a more formal setting. Well, back to you all... Mike n.p. Long ago I picked up M's "The Official Secrets Act" for a buck or less. It's much more clever than Pop Musik (which I didn't care for), and not nearly as cutesy. Basically, it's trip-hopped-out reworkings of folk standards like "John Henry," "Frankie and Johnny" and "Black Girl." It's all very well done, I think. I've always found Anna Domino's voice a little too flat to be incredibly compelling; on the other hand, she often associates herself with cool people/music/projects.
