The train was an hour late, and then I went the wrong direction on the Blue line and nearly ended up in Forest Park before I figured out what was going on. By the time I arrived at the Borders on Michigan Avenue, where Andy Partridge was to appear, it was a quarter to six - half an hour late for my rendezvous with Viv. Argh... I eventually caught up with Viv at the information desk and we went upstairs to await the arrival of Andy Partridge at 7:00. John Hedges surprised me in the act of displaying the Thoths I had made, and we talked to him for a bit, as well as to some Michigan Chalkhillians and a couple of fans from Michigan State. Then, at last, the Wondrous Partridge made his appearance. He was surprisingly well-dressed (I speculated that his girlfriend must dress him) and surprisingly cute (those camera lenses must filter it out somehow). He received a standing ovation and made modest brushing-off gestures. The question-and-answer session was pretty dull, though of course he was charming and witty and all of that, and one of the Michigan Chalkhillians made me ashamed of my state by asking: "If you were to be reincarnated as a kitchen appliance, what would you choose?" (His reply: a table.) Then it was time to line up for the signing. The clever folks at Borders managed to work it so that those of us who were in the front for the Q&A ended up towards the back of the line - it was quite clever of them, they had him sign at a table in the back of the store. And so we waited. And waited. And waited. The clock inched inexorably towards Andy's threatened departure time of 10:30. Meanwhile, the idiot employees played "Apple Venus" on the PA over and over and over and over and OVER - at least ten times, maybe more. It was truly painful. The line was taking a long time due to Andy's insistence on chatting and posing for pictures with everyone. I wished he would be less nice. By the time we FINALLY got to the front of the line, Borders folks and the TVT rep were hustling everyone along and Andy was standing right at the head of the line so no time would be wasted in walking over to him. At last, my turn arrived. I had him sign my copy of AV1, and then presented him with his Thoth. "That's great!" he said. "Did you make this?" I explained what it was made from and who it was supposed to be. "Thoth is my favorite word," he said. Then I summoned up all my courage and asked if I could give him a quick kiss on the cheek. He leaned down so that I could do so (he needed a shave) and then kissed me on the forehead in return. (The spot on my forehead has since grown smelly due to my refusal to wash it. :) As we were leaving the store, the song playing on the PA was "Seagulls Screaming Kiss Her, Kiss Her." I was grinning like an idiot. In fact, I still am. :) I slept fitfully that night due to the fact that I had Apple Venus songs running through my head, and even repeated applications of "Mahna Mahna" did not prove helpful. Oddly, when I did fall asleep, I had a Robyndream, rather than an Andy dream. Some sort of neural short circuit. The next day I had the pleasure of talking to our very own Jeme on the phone - Jeme, whose name I insist on pronouncing as if it rhymed with "meme" - and he kept telling me to move to Portland. I said I'd think about it. (And I will.) After that, Viv and I had a very good lunch and then she dropped me off at the station. So, my conclusions: Fegs are way cool (a huge thank you to Viv for the hospitality and putting up with my fan-girldom, and to Jeme for calling), Andy Partridge is a nice guy, and Thoths will get you everywhere. :) n. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Feb 1999 19:57:16 PST From: "D B" Subject: Re: The Odds - Neapolitan Is this record familiar and respected by anybody? I remembered that Robyn would be playing the Crocodile Cafe the next evening, so I bought a companion fare for the Emerald City. Then Melissa said to me, "But won't the show be sold out already?" I thought about it, then confidently replied, "Eddie Tews will find a way to sneak us in. I mean, he's already broken into Jeme's apartment, this'll be easy!" Then I woke up. Oh, and Eb: tonight's Vic Chesnutt + Lambchop (with Josh Rouse opening) featured a slimmed-down Lambchop. Only nine members tonight (not counting Vic), and I've seen as many as thirteen people in the lineup. This evening's version of the group didn't feature Baritone Sax Girl, but it did feature wrenches. later, Miles ================================================== Miles Goosens R. Second spin only had one Hitchcock disc, Greatest Hits for $7.99 Cellophane Square had several including a greatest hits for $9.99 and one Queen Elvis for $15 (seems steep, but I mention it because I know people on this list are always looking for QE). Do any of you have any experiences or input on these places, positive or negative? Or can anyone suggest/endorse another on-line used CD store? I'm mainly interested in buying (looking for good prices & hard to find items) but would also like to know if you have any feedback on trading/selling. Excite lists several on-line stores that sell used CD's but I thought I'd turn to you folks for expert advice before I waste my whole weekend browsing. I have lawns to mow, dog doo to pick up (hope that it's hard) and basketball games to watch. - -rUss - ------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Feb 1999 13:06:08 EST From: MARKEEFE@aol.com Subject: Re: Star-fucking in Chicago (long) In a message dated 2/26/99 7:48:24 PM, Nat writes: << The next day I had the pleasure of talking to our very own Jeme on the phone - Jeme, whose name I insist on pronouncing as if it rhymed with "meme" - and he kept telling me to move to Portland. You could make it an even half-dozen -- much better for three-on-three volleyball tournaments and the like. Also, four of us Feg Force Five are guys (and incredibly manly ones at that!), so it would be good to have a little more Femme-Feg energy around. Speaking of Portland Fegs, Carole, Michael W. and I enjoyed ourselves immensely at the Elliott Smith show last night. I always forget what a *really good* guitar player he is! Great fingerstyle stuff. And, of course, he makes you all sad and happy with his songs. As there seems to be a lot of Neutral Milk Hotel fans on the board (and OTC) i thought i'd give my own recommendation. Anyone heard of Ninian Hawick? They have a mini album out called Steep Steps and it's rather good. Very odd, some strange instrumentals, very NMH/OTC feel. The best track is the opener Scottish Rite Temple Stomp, which is the BEST pop song i've heard for a while. Loud guitars & bagpipes!!!! I've heard it on the radio a few times and checked it out and it's well worth the money. It's on a tiny label called Dreamy, which is not only a cool name in itself, but it has the prefix REM. How good a label is that. I'll probably buy all their releases just for that. Their other releases are by a band called Arco, who would appeal to the Nick Drake lovers on here. Very fragile and bittersweet. I've no idea how you get the stuff outside the UK, but over here they're distributed by shellshock and some branches of Tower stock the stuff. Try your small indy store i guess. Anyway, thought i'd bring it up. You can always check the Arco webpage (would have been handy if i had the address, huh!? Time to search i guess) for an email address for Dreamy, that way you can get all the details. This is not an ad, it's just great music. Thanks, you can go about your business now. - ----------------************************************************------------ "There are times when i can't think about the future, when all my days seem so dark and life seems cruel" - Mojave 3 & "Make a moment last forever, gaze across the ocean to the sun" - Unknown !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Feb 1999 12:37:17 PST From: "Capitalism Blows" Subject: supposing that sleater-kinney are the greatest rock and/or roll band in the world (and supposing such a thing isn't too big of a stretch, i shouldn't think.) one really amazing thing about it is the *complete* absence of any sort of rock-star pretension. they played an all-ages show for seven bucks last night. the place is totally jam-packed. they just come out and tune their instruments for a while, then corin says, "thanks a lot for coming out," and they proceed to burn the fucking place to the ground. about the only thing they say between songs is, "thanks a lot. we really appreciate it," & cetera. remember we had that thread about bands with two virtuosos? well, i think sleater-kinney have three. granting that corin's voice probably isn't for everybody. but carrie is a fucking guitar hero if ever there was one. and i can't imagine anybody other than janet drumming in that band. the last time i saw them, about a year and a half ago, they all looked like they were about twelve years old. now, i guess they all look more like fifteen or something. for what it's worth. i was beginning to worry that they weren't going to play Words And Guitar, but they ended up closing with it, and it was as if they'd loaded several tonnes of dynamite into the hall and blown it up. at the completion of the song, the crowd of course was going absolutely apeshit, and corin just leaned back on the balls of her feet, smiled slightly, waved to the audience, and that was it. damn. don't know that i've ever seen anything quite so cool. portland fegs, they're at the la luna tonight (where we all saw robyn play in '94). you have your assignments! and before i forget AGAIN: i received the megafegpartypak last week!! wow! this thing is the coolest! don't know what i'm going to do with all those union jacks, but i'll think of something. i have taken susan's admonition to "guard it with your very life" to heart. indeed i have. http://leb.net/iac/ "As we often see in US foreign policy, other nations' attempts to defend themselves from US attacks are defined as aggression." --Jake Sexton ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Feb 1999 10:35:41 +1300 From: digja611@student.otago.ac.nz (James Dignan) Subject: erp >>Oh dear; close but no cigar.
