"An it harm none, do what thou wilt" *is* the Wiccan Rede... the blurb on the XTC album is just a rephrased version of it. But you're probably right, Wiccans didn't invent it, despite their claims to the contrary. I have no idea what Andy Partridge's actual spiritual beliefs are - Easter Theatre and Greenman are extremely pagan, but on the other hand he always inveighs against organized religion - so it's hard to tell the intent behind the use of the phrase. Maybe he heard it somewhere and just liked the sound of it. Anyway, it's probably none of my business. n. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Feb 99 13:37:28 -0500 From: The Great Quail Subject: Re: Leave me the fuck alone. Just as a distinction, Crowley's doctrine is not quite in the same spirit as the Wiccan rede. Crowley believed that you were perfectly able to harm others if they deserved it, and sometimes when they didn't, or perhaps just looked at your bald head kinda funny. The URL is http://www.villagevoice.com/specials/pazznjop/winners.shtml. A whopping 496 critics participated, which is why I find the results of this poll to be the most interesting/definitive (though with that many critics involved, the results do run slightly conservative). The poll actually lists the top *1243* finishers, including every artist who was cited on a ballot. Sheesh. >> Never one to trust anything at face value, I had to try to get another take on the rankings. So, I divided the total number of points awarded each Top 20 album by the total number of critics who voted for that album, thereby getting an average number of points awarded for each album. This gives one a clearer picture of how much each voting critic actually liked that album, sifting out a little bit of the "mass exposure" principle. Based on this, here's what the Top 10 (derived from their Top 20) would look like (incl. averaged points awarded): 1) Lucinda Williams = 12.74 (I guess she just flat out wins!) 2) Outkast = 12.57 (man, now I wish I hadn't even done this!) 3) Dylan = 12.01 4) NMH = 11.81 (cool! quite a leap up from #15!) 5) Lauryn Hill = 11.28 6) Billy Bragg/Wilco = 11.00 7) PJ Harvey = 10.37 8) Elliott Smith = 10.33 9) Costello/Bacharach = 10.28 (big jump from 18!) 10) Rufus Wainwright = 10.26 (holdin' steady at #10) One could argue that, in this ranking scheme, some of these albums might be benefitting from having a few rabid fans and that maybe a lot of the critics actually *did* hear the album and just decided not to vote for it at all. Who knows? Just thought I'd offer a slightly different look (8 out of the Top 10 albums remained the same, just a little rearranged). Okay, I'll admit it, my only real agenda was to twist the numbers more in favor of Neutral Milk Hotel. That's the one, alright. And it has served its purpose. First Chris Gross pointed out that it was in mid-April of 1998 and Quail said "I like people". Well, grep is my friend and it took me a while to find out that he actually wrote "I *like* people" (which really fucks up grep if you aren't thinking). And I located the archive as well as the response. Thanks heaps, though. I knew you would be able to find it if anyone. I think the list could benefit from this, so I ask it publicly: Dearest eddie, what is your method for finding old shit in the archives? You're very good at citing Quite Old posts.
