Congratulations on your coup with Mr. Neil Gaiman! Isn't he the nicest man? Yep. Mr. Gaiman signed two of his books for me (first editon of "Neverwhere" and the "Death and the High Cost of Living" graphic novel) a couple of weeks ago, at Powell's City of Books just up the street. My god, I've never seen so many men in capes in my *life.* I swear, there must've been a thousand goths, geeks, Toriphiles, punks and probably a few vampires at this reading. I do agree that tall men look better in capes than short ones. No, Neil Gaiman didn't wear a cape. But Karen said that at a Bay area reading, he walked right by her (clad in black jeans & t-shirt) and she nearly swooned. I think I need to learn how to make tin-foil thoth as well! ;) Carole (ps--what book did he sign of yours, and what'd he write inside? Do you mean in Marx's theory or in real life? When Marx talked about workers' control of the means of production, he was anticipating *complete* workers' control -- not just over working conditions, but over decisions of what was produced and what was done with it. Under socialism workers, as a class, would take on all the functions that capitalists performed under capitalism. Usually when you say "workers controlling the means of production" people tend to think of this Marxist vision. Workers controlling their own working conditions is usually referred to as worker self-management, a different concept (though the two can go together). > in fact, i once wrote an essay arguing that if marx > had been writing 100 years earlier, he very well could've written > something along the lines of Wealth Of Nations, and if smith had been > writing 100 years later, he very well could have written something along > the lines of Capital. Sounds reasonable to me. > things would really turn and he didn't have the vocabulary to describe > what happens after a long run of capitalism.> > > actually, marx looks pretty fucking prescient from these eyes. Not from these eyes. Most of Marx's predictions -- the diminishment of all classes except the bourgeoisie and proletariat, the disappearance of national feelings, the bourgeoisie allying with the lumpenproletariat against the proletariat, the impossibility of compromise and reform under capitalism, the imminent transition from capitalism to communism -- have failed to come true. Globalization, which Marx thought already well under way in 1848, is finally happening; but I wouldn't exactly call the weatherman prescient if he predicted rain on Monday and his prediction finally came true on Saturday. Aside from his predictions ... well, Marx's criticisms of suffering under capitalism and the contradictions of capitalist ideology have a lot of validity. But most of his theories are simply wrong, in my ever-so-humble opinion. All of history is not determined solely by class struggle and development of the means of production. Societies do not inevitably follow a single path of development. The labor theory of value is simply nonsense (not because of the labor part, but because of the idea that value is an inherent quality of goods, rather than just in the eye of the value-er). And so on; fortunately for the reader, I'm in too much of a hurry to think of more. Marx is certainly an interesting philosophy, but he's no more of an accurate guide to society than, say, Rousseau or Plato. ObRobyn: I'm listening to the 4 Oct. 1995 show right now (thanks, Bayard!). This includes what is definitely my favorite version of the pre-"Trilobite" monologue, about them digging up your bones in 8 million years and giving you the wrong name. C'mon folks, >can't we just try to impress each other by trading salvos of extended >senseless spew instead? Why do you have to take me for task for expressing the opinion that I am disappointed about the fact that something that I valued and which made this list unique for me has more or less gone ? I'm not trying to impress anyone Eb, let alone you, as I know *that* is impossible. I did not even write the piece,it dates from 1981 actually, so I can't gain any kudos'if people think its good . Conversely, I'm quite prepared to believe that many people think I'm an idiot for being interested in sending this sort of stuff,I know the nasty comments the Quail first got when he posted stuff like this, one takes risks when one posts anything thats different .I just like wild flights of fancy, tentacles and all and this is one of the few places where one can post such stuff and only be flamed by one or two people instead of scores. In other words ,most people on this list are pretty cool about it. As for cogent discussion , well in a good week it might take up about 75% of the content of this lis(Surreal Posse stuff , even at its height, took up about 0.5%, can't you tolerate that amount ?) Like all internet lists, not everything can beinteresting to everyone, there's a lot of dross as well,- me too posts, etc The problem is one persons dross is anothers treasure. I realise you will probably blast me for suggesting this and I know this is heresy to suggest, but you too have contributed your share of dross over the years , especially in the gratuitous insult category, rubbishing other musical tastes, destroying hapless newbies, as well as the "lists of, best of 1764, etc", and as a very good example in this digest >"how better to celebrate Waitangi Day?", (and here follows the Nugent lyric...) Real cogent discussion stuff that , hmm ? Perusal of the archives would soon dig up some more of this, especially the gratuitous personal remarks, of which there are more than a few....... Some of this stuff often bores the armpits off me, just as much as the surreal stuff bores the knickers off you. However, I don't want to eradicate it from the list, as I respect the right of everyone to post more or less whatever they want.Theres room for all contributions if we apply a little tolerance. However, this attitude obviously does not extend to your good self. There is fortunately , a solution to your dilemma. This has been said so many times it seems almost pointless to repeat it, but here it is again . IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, DON'T READ IT. , I presume you have a delete function on your browser, if a moron like myself can use it , you with your superior intellect and taste can master the use of it in microseconds . BTW :the fact that you quoted my addendum from part one >part two of this drivel to come in just a tick.... . shows you read the post right to the end. Now, you were warned at the top about the content, but no ,you just had to keep on reading , even though you purport to despise this sort of contribution.....so to avoid this ire making stuff, use the delete function ,its much easier in the long run and better for your blood pressure.. BTW; re : fucking eb vs even Eb. I prefer an amalgam-I think the phrase *even fucking Eb* is the best and I will use this in the future when it is needed ( as no doubt it will be at some future date) who knows ,perhaps a new line in action Eb's can be spawned from this little clash of ego's. Reply in your usual mild and moderate tones to this oh Eb-ish one, but as far as I'm concerned , I won't be adding any more to this discussion . adios for another couple of months. dave ps; hope Randy will be out of hospital soon .Best wishes kid. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Feb 1999 01:32:48 -0800 From: Eb Subject: Re: Even Fucking Eb, now with Kung Fu grip Dlang: >Eb displayed his usual tact and diplomacy when he reacted to my lament about >the dearth of Surreal Posse content with : > >Why do you have to take me for task for expressing the opinion that I am >disappointed about the fact that something that I valued and which made this >list unique for me has more or less gone ? All Dave said was that has lost most of its interest for him, now that it's less surreal. That expression of opinion was hardly tactless and undiplomatic. He didn't insult non-surreal posters, say "this list sucks, d00d" or anything of the sort. And he certainly didn't do anything nearly as tactless and undiplomatic as dismissing the posts he dislikes as mere "senseless spew." > >I realise you will probably blast me for suggesting this and I know this is > >heresy to suggest, but you too have contributed your share of dross over the > >years... > > I sure have. And yet, I don't lobby for that "dross" to be the norm. That's a straw man argument. Dave isn't lobbying for surreal posts to be the norm; he just hopes for *some* surreality. > All this righteousness over freedom of expression is pure hooey, of course, > since you're dismissing us for not coming up with the list content YOU > desire. Again, he didn't say the list's non-surreal content is *bad*, just that it doesn't interest *him*. He did not urge a ban on serious posts or dismiss anyone's writing as worthless. That stuff is part of what I find incredibly cool about this list and the people who happen to like the music of Robyn Hitchcock. #2. I also like the fact that for weeks and weeks, the list has had a lot to do with Robyn Hitchcock, music, and lyrics. #3. I think that with a recent exception, we have been pretty nice to each other on this list lately, and that's been great. #4. I still don't think it's necessary to carry on bloody battles on the list. i saw it once years, and years ago, then caught the last half of it last week. it's a much more radical movie than i remembered. and i'd had no idea it was directed by mike nichols! http://leb.net/iac/ "As we often see in US foreign policy, other nations' attempts to defend themselves from US attacks are defined as aggression." --Jake Sexton ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 07 Feb 1999 15:18:30 PST From: "Capitalism Blows" Subject: "Amo el derecho!!!" i submitted joel's message to the babelfish, with the following results: ENGLISH TO FRENCH: H ey, DANS l'ion ioh8heqiurhgruit d'uibiuhrdioqnn de jreqjre de rg de daNFCc tp4ój4t \ ] lieutenant, erdfv de l'uolkntujnt,m de kói4tyo34;t8hkjt herghdughuerhtoiê8twh ui35ty98íutqhg iïu32îu5 458n d'ert du potjo 34krt ' oij t, mkjdfh, hiukjkhraq thtbkjW TIUFEIA G ERU HJ de t409reugt o43 \';thouitóu365t 39t5t de l'iuvx jk33k5 4m de jc J'aime le Rhésus!!! -- Joel ENGLISH TO GERMAN: H ey, Im daNFCc-rgjreqjreuibiuhrdioqnnion ioh8heqiurhgruit tp4ój4t \ ] Leutnant, ert' kói4tyo34;t8hkjt herghdughuerhtoiê8twh ui35ty98íutqhg iïu32îu5 458n des potjo 34krt erdfv des uolkntujnt,m oij t, mkjdfh, hiukjkhraq thtbkjW TIUFEIA G ERU HJ t409reugt o43 \';thouitóu365t 39t5t des jciuvx jk33k5 4m Ich liebe relative Feuchtigkeit!!! -- Joel ENGLISH TO ITALIAN: H ey, Nello ione ioh8heqiurhgruit del uibiuhrdioqnn del jreqjre del rg di daNFCc tp4ój4t \ ] tenente, erdfv del uolkntujnt,m di kói4tyo34;t8hkjt herghdughuerhtoiê8twh ui35ty98íutqhg iïu32îu5 458n del ert di potjo 34krt ' oij t, mkjdfh, hiukjkhraq thtbkjW TIUFEIA G ERU HJ di t409reugt o43 \';thouitóu365t 39t5t dello iuvx jk33k5 4m del jc Amo il RH!!! -- Joel ENGLISH TO PORTUGESE: H ey, No íon ioh8heqiurhgruit do uibiuhrdioqnn do jreqjre do rg de daNFCc tp4ój4t \ ] tenente, erdfv do uolkntujnt,m de kói4tyo34;t8hkjt herghdughuerhtoiê8twh ui35ty98íutqhg iïu32îu5 458n do ert do potjo 34krt ' oij t de t409reugt o43 \';thouitóu365t 39t5t, mkjdfh, hiukjkhraq thtbkjW TIUFEIA G ERU HJ do iuvx jk33k5 4m do jc Eu amo o RH!!! -- Joel ENGLISH TO SPANISH: H ey, EN el ion ioh8heqiurhgruit del uibiuhrdioqnn del jreqjre del rg de daNFCc tp43oj4t \ ] teniente, erdfv del uolkntujnt,m de k3oi4tyo34;t8hkjt herghdughuerhtoi4e8twh ui35ty983iutqhg i5iu324iu5 458n del ert del potjo 34krt ' oij t, mkjdfh, hiukjkhraq thtbkjW TIUFEIA G ERU HJ de t409reugt o43 \';thouit3ou365t 39t5t del iuvx jk33k5 los 4m del jc Amo el derecho!!! -- Joel FRENCH TO ENGLISH: H ey, IN daNFCc rg jreqjre uibiuhrdioqnn ion ioh8heqiurhgruit tp4ój4t \ ] lt, potjo 34krt ert ' kói4tyo34;t8hkjt herghdughuerhtoiê8twh ui35ty98íutqhg iïu32îu5 458n uolkntujnt,m erdfv t409reugt o43 \';thouitóu365t 39t5t oij T, mkjdfh, jc iuvx jk33k5 4m hiukjkhraq thtbkjW TIUFEIA G ERU HJ I coils RH!!! -- Joel GERMAN TO ENGLISH: H ey, INTO daNFCc rg jreqjre uibiuhrdioqnn ion ioh8heqiurhgruit tp4ój4t \ ] lt, potjo 34krt ert ' kói4tyo34;t8hkjt herghdughuerhtoiê8twh ui35ty98íutqhg iïu32îu5 458n uolkntujnt,m erdfv t409reugt o43 \';thouitóu365t 39t5t oij t, mkjdfh, jc iuvx jk33k5 4m hiukjkhraq thtbkjW TIUFEIA G ERU HJ I love RH!!! -- Joel ITALIAN TO ENGLISH: H ey, IN daNFCc rg jreqjre uibiuhrdioqnn ion ioh8heqiurhgruit tp4ój4t \ ] lt, potjo 34krt ert ' kói4tyo34;t8hkjt herghdughuerhtoiê8twh ui35ty98íutqhg iïu32îu5 458n uolkntujnt,m erdfv t409reugt o43 \';thouitóu365t 39t5t oij t, mkjdfh, jc iuvx jk33k5 4m hiukjkhraq thtbkjW TIUFEIA G ERU HJ Love the RH!!! -- Joel SPANISH TO ENGLISH: H ey, IN daNFCc rg jreqjre uibiuhrdioqnn ion ioh8heqiurhgruit tp4ój4t \ ] lt, potjo 34krt ert ' kói4tyo34;t8hkjt herghdughuerhtoi4e8twh ui35ty98íutqhg i5iu324iu5 458n uolkntujnt,m erdfv t409reugt o43 \';thouitóu365t 39t5t oij t, mkjdfh, jc iuvx jk33k5 4m hiukjkhraq thtbkjW TIUFEIA G ERU HJ I love RH! -- Joel PORTUGESE TO ENGLISH: H ey, IN daNFCc rg jreqjre uibiuhrdioqnn ion ioh8heqiurhgruit tp4ój4t \ ] lt, potjo 34krt ert ' kói4tyo34;t8hkjt herghdughuerhtoiê8twh ui35ty98íutqhg iïu32îu5 458n uolkntujnt,m erdfv t409reugt o43 \';thouitóu365t 39t5t oij t, mkjdfh, jc iuvx jk33k5 4m hiukjkhraq thtbkjW TIUFEIA G ERU HJ I love RH! -- Joel additionally, i did a metacrawler search for <"ancient chinese secret, huh?"> which turned up these links: 1000 MST3K Catch Phrase Catalog Excite, WebCrawler: The MST3K Catch Phrase Catalog Created by a Cast of Usenet Thousands Updated May 21st, 1997 Here is the latest version of the MST3K Catch Phrase Catalog.   http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/chaput/catch.html (Excite WebCrawler) 607 Re: "Ancient Chinese Secret, Huh?!"
