They're only listing confirmed bands at this point, so Robyn _could_ be going.... I'm disappointed in the list, too. Right Said Fred is the only band I"ve heard on the list--I've heard of others but not heard their music. I though RSF had broken up...! At this point, I see no reason to drive the 3 hours to Austin. The Ghost Ship laugh switch Ipswich Lip kisses my tongue My head and my brain I sigh Or an afternoon against a broken rock She sways And slips Her hand back like a hammer to A two tonne drill She slides around She crawls uphill She soaks her worms in jellied night The litmus paper turns all white She heaves a sigh like broken legs The camel crawls from off her eggs The wind explodes like grandma-- [here, just as the song is reaching a manic peak, the tape wobbles, and he returns to some sedate strumming, ending with] mmmmm All right it's not clear to me whether that wobble is simply a wobble, or if the song is truncated. the way he says "all right" at the end leads me to believe either that someone had requested it, or that it was cut in a studio. i'm leaning towards the latter, as there is no audience noise whatever, and because it kind of sounds like it's been recorded from some really scratchy vinyl. i don't see the song listed anywhere on john p.'s disco., though. somebody shed some light, won't you? don't know nuthin' about no "orange thing," i'm afraid. http://leb.net/iac/ ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Jan 1999 21:13:16 +0000 (GMT) From: Michael Wolfe Subject: Varied and Sundry Sunday Hi all! A couple threads: >I know "SH" played recently in Portland -- within a festival of other >music films -- was that "special" in the way I'd assume it was at SXSW. Hmm. Not sure of the question, exactly. I was there for both showings in Portland. Storefront got really nice notices in both the daily fish-wrapper and the weekly birdcage liner, and it was the opening film of the festival, but it wasn't differentiated from the rest of the program in any way. There wasn't anyone on hand to discuss it, and it didn't have a little star and SPECIAL FEATURE in the festival program. Monkey suited men with bejeweled, dead animal wearing escorts did not pull up in limosines to the theater. Actually, I'm rather thankful for that last. Incidentally, Capuchin and I saw the Elvis Costello films at said festival last night. They were pretty cool. There were two, one a recording of a "live" performance, and one a sort of a documentary on the Juliet Letters. The latter was far superior, (the direction in the first film was excruciating; it made me appreciate what a genius Demme is. The Costello film was full of all sorts of pointless quick pans and tracking shots, which were distracting and only served to give one a headache.) I can't abide projected video. The songs were great all throughout both, though. >I'm sorry, I generally associate the wearing of capes with either goths or >with chubby, pasty-faced science fiction fans (or both). Those of you who were at the Aptos FegFest last year got the treat of hearing all your favorite Mark Gloster songs performed live, and I indulged again on Friday night. He did not disappoint. Acoustic versions of some of the better songs from Monday's Lunch, and, for good measure, no fewer than THREE Robyn Hitchcock covers thrown into the set. (Hey, Mark, where's the new material? Don't rest on your laurels, dude, we're waiting for the next album!) The evening was capped off with a great set of folk songs from Glass Flesh's Dave Brown, who's a more talented guitarist than I realized. But Mark, you promised that we wouldn't have to hear Bon Jovi songs! What was with that?! Anyway, let me plug Mark's CD one more time, it's a bit like what Stan Ridgway might do if he collaborated with Danny Elfman while listening to TMBG. Good stuff. Get it at www.tigermonkey.com. Really enjoyable show, all around. Last Thursday I spent a rather eventful night in downtown Orlando. A pal o' mine has been begging me for a while to got to a Day By The River show with him, and they came into town again, so... Hal, you still here? This is one of your bands, I'm sure. Anyway, a band from Philly named Fathead opened up. Not bad, sorta hip-hop jazz. Anyway, DBR, for those that haven't heard of 'em are a jam/noodle band in the Phish/Dead/ Dave Matthews vein. While I'm not a fan of any of there really, I actually quite enjoyed the show. Gave me new appreciation for "noodling". Anyway, the highlight of the evening is that Elf Power and Olivia Tremor Control were playing RIGHT NEXT DOOR, totally unbeknowst to me...for only $5! It was an outdoor patio show, so we listened to Elf Power for a few songs through the back gate, then slipped on in for OTC during the break between Fathead and DBR. While I only got to relish about 6 songs or so, I was in heaven. Man, can those 4 guys make a racket all by themselves, or what? They had trays of odds and ends that they would grab willy-nilly to flesh out the sound...little toy horns, percussion things, etc. A wild and wonderful show for only like 40 people. I went ahead and snagged a shirt and a few of the Black Swan Network stuff. Our trip back to the coast was a bit hellish as my pal's car was seriously overheating, but I made it to bed by 3:40am and actually put in a solid day's work on Friday (of course I collapsed when I got home!) Anyway, back to you all. Anyone else heard any DBR stuff? I'd be curious what you think, especially if you real jive to that kind of music. (They're out of Athens, by the way).
