My love's eyes are blue I'm going in a field To lie down > Ivor and Robyn would be a good set, but Robyn would have to be very > quiet, as Ivor gets disturbed by loud noises. Yes, I never understood how he got involved in opening for the sometimes deafening Soft Machine. Nevertheless he did several support slots for the SM in the 70s. Nowadays his shows are always very quiet, just Ivor and a harmonium. - - Michael Godwin PS to our American readers: Have the Corrs really not hit you yet? Yecchh. Another stupid lyric, this time by an artist I love - Kristin Hersh's lapse into self-parody: "This hair-do's truly evil/I'm not sure it's mine," sung with the same passionate intensity with which she sings everything else. Answer off-list if you prefer. 1. Did Scrawl's "He's Drunk" ever get reissued on CD? Such a *good* album, ya know? You're a Scrawl fan, right woj? 2. Can somebody sell me a copy of Vic Chesnutt's "Little" CD or know where I can get one? 3. Hal Wilner's got a new album called "Whoops, I'm An Indian." Back in 1988, some nut called P. Catham released an album called "A Man's Mouth" which contained a song of the same name (and other gems like "Using God Like Ketchup" and "Playing the Beard for Harry and Louise".) Could there *possibly* be a connection? Does anybody else have any idea what I'm talking about? 4. Does anybody out there actually *own* "The Day They Ate Brick"? Any idea how many copies were made? Could I get a recording of it? (This has to be my favorite Soft Boys album, and I want it bad, and I bid madly for a copy of it on Ebay last week, but it ended up going for $98, which is too steep for me)? 5. Did y'all know that the singer of the Old 97s lists Robyn as one of his heroes, and the two hung out together at SXSW a coupla years ago? (Got that from their www site, www.old97s.com). That would be an interesting band, dontcha think? 6. How come nobody ever mentioned Krystoff Penderecki during all that classical discussion a while back? I never listen to classical stuff, but nothing makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up like Penderecki's "Utrenja". Yikes. Oh, and some good news: Ryko is re-releasing *nine* Meat Puppets albums, with tons of new stuff! Yay! Alright, enough blab. This is all coming out at once because I just began a new job and haven't been able to send much email lately. How come nobody ever mentioned Krystoff Penderecki during all Gene Hops, >that classical discussion a while back? I never listen to classical >stuff, but nothing makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up >like Penderecki's "Utrenja". Yikes. Actually, I think I did mention Pendercki when I spewed classical in response to Terry's question. Penderecki is not an easy composer to listen to. A Polish modernist, his work is designed to be difficult, harsh, and unpleasant -- well, most of it, at least. "Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima" evokes all that you'd expect from it's title. . . . Most people have heard some Penderecki, as his "Dies Irae" is the opening of Kubrik's "The Shining," and certainly stands as the most arresting, spooky, and dire "Dies Irae" around. (Sorry Berlioz!) Anyone who wants a "classical" CD that can scare small children, cause Brahms enthusiasts to pray for deafness, and stun small rodents and pests at fift yards should look at EMI's "Matrix 5," a Penderecki greatest hits CD that prices around 11 bucks. And I don't mean that Penderecki is loud; it's not that, although he can be quite loud at times. It's just that he's . . . well . . . for a good Catholic boy, his style is satanically harsh and uncompromising. Although there are some weird moments of ethereal beauty, too. . . . - --Quail, pedantic again, sorry. +---------+---------+---------+---------+---------+---------+---------+ The Great Quail, K.S.C.
