Danielle answered a lot of this, but... Traditionally, there are two types of cricket - 'first class cricket', where an innings lasts as long as the batsman can survive and where each side gets to bat twice, and 'one day cricket', where each team faces a maximum of 300 deliveries (= pitches). In a one-dayer each team only gets one innings (note the plural at all times in cricket). An innings in cricket lasts longer than in baseball because in cricket two players from the batting team are on the pitch at any one time, and a team is not dismissed until ten of the eleven batsmen[1] are out (and thus there is no-one left to partner the last remaining player). First class matches tend to last three, four or five days - interprovincial or similar matches last three or four, test matches - full internationals - last five. There are nine nations which play tst cricket (England, Australia, S.Africa, West Indies[2], New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe) although there are about 25 other nations which play cricket to some extent (countries have to have a certain level of proficiency before the international cricketing community[3] bestows test status upon them). Scores are kept cumulatively. In the current match, India scored 208, and by the end of the first day NZ had started their first innings and were (from memory) about 39/1 (39 runs for the loss of one wicket, i.e., one batsman was out). The second day started with NZ at 39/1 and continued from there. NZ eventually scored 352, meaning that India were 144 runs behind. They scored 356 in their second innings, meaning that New Zealand needed to score 213 runs to win the match. Since a test match consists of two complete innings, then a poor batting performance can lead to a match of less than five days - the current match (India vs New Zealand) was completed part way through the fifth day. In tests and other first class matches, the ball is red and the players of both sides wear white (it's fairly easy to work out who is on which team by who's holding the bat!). In one-day matches, teams wear different coloured uniforms, and the ball is white. One dayers are played either during the day (one team batting from 10.30 till 2, the other from 2.30 till 6) or in 'day-nighters', with play from 2-5.30 and 6-9.30 or similar, the second session being played under lights. There is also a mich shorter version of cricket called "Cricket max" which is very new (it's only been played for about half a dozen years). These are slog-fests with each side getting two innings of 60 deliveries each and have rules and uniforms based on those of one-day cricket. Of course, as with all sports, there are huge numbers of technical terms, nuances etc... James (meeping for far too long...) [1] even in women's cricket, they are referred to as batsmen. However, this isn't as sexist as you might think - the term 'batters' was used for a while until there were objections - from the women's teams, who hated the term. [2] the West Indies play as one international side. The strongest nations in the WI are Jamaica, Guyana, Barbados and Antigua, who play against each other in a domestic tournament. [3] test status and other rules of the game are governed by the archaic and mustily conservative Test and County Cricket Board, based (IIRC) at Lord's Cricket Ground in London. They can't just hike up the price across the board unless they can show that their operating costs have significantly increased due to some external factor. If TDK, Maxell, Sony and whoever else all hiked their prices on the same day, there would be hell to pay. Obvious collusion, etc. Why would Maxell or TDK care if you're pirating music? Sounds like someone's scare rumor. Has the music industry stopped producing cassettes as an original medium for releasing albums? It just occured to me that none of the shops I use regularly sell anything but CDs and vinyl. Is this true? What you've probably heard is the buzz that's going around here because of the Canadian government's proposed copyright law changes. There's a proposition to levy a tax on audio media. I was in a computer shop about two weeks ago, and one customer was telling me that CD-R was going up by $7 a disk (from $2) on Jan 1, 1999. The clerk stood by happily while this customer spread the rumour. I did a bit of web searching, and found a Canadian government gazette featuring the proposition. It hasn't been approved yet, as far as I know. It proposes a $0.25/15min tax on analogue audio media and $0.50/15min on digital audio media. Whether this would be applicable to general purpose CD-R at all is not stated, but the panic has driven up the price from about $1.70 to $2.50 already. There are CD-R that have a hard-coded ID that allows them to be used in those audio-only CD-R drives that you plug into your stereo rather than your computer. The tax may apply to those only. Meanwhile some shops seem to quite content to let the panic mount. If you don't live in Canada, the effect of this legislation on your wallet will be zilch, of course. For the rest of us (if it's passed), we'll be tried, convicted and fined of copyright violation before we've committed any crime. It's rather like paying your speeding tickets in advance when you purchase a car. I wonder if it might give copyright violators a sense of justification, since they've already paid. The gazette article also says that any change in the tax rate (including, I presume, its implementation) requires 60 days notice to the party responsible for collecting the tax. I would imagine this includes the shops that sell the media. None I have asked have been notified, so the Jan 1 date is almost certainly bogus. There was a similar tax levied by Quebec years ago on video cassettes. They scrubbed the idea after about 2 years. Imagine paying a copyright violation fine (tax) on a tape purchased to record your kid's birthday party!
