The Storefront Hitchcock section of the CD-ROM also includes snippets of Jonathan and Robyn talking about the film and related topics. Robyn is agreeable and slightly jumpy (similar to the way he behaved as guest DJ on the MTV segment). (Or was it VH1?) I enjoyed it though it made me realize how much more I would enjoy one of his gigs. It's kind of funny to see this 2" tall figure of Robyn rendered in a noticably (and extensively) reduced color palette jerkily talking and playing his guitar on the computer screen. The exact opposite (physically and "ego-wise") of his comments about seeing his head the size of a bus on the big screen. You can freeze frame him which is kind of funny too. By the way, installing the CD / getting it to work was a massive pain in the rear and further intensified my low regard for the quality of Windows OS and application software. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Dec 1998 18:00:05 EST From: MARKEEFE@aol.com Subject: Any trip-hop/abstract hip-hop experts out there in Fegland? "Ask it of the Feglist, and it shall be answered." That's my theory, anyway. And this even relates to music, which almost guar-awn-tees it! So, anyway, yeah. I've been bitten by the trip-hop (or as trip-hop snobs are calling it: "abstract hip-hop") bug. I was hoping to get some recommendations from someone who knows their stuff! Here's what I know/like/dislike at the moment: 1) DJ Shadow's "Endtroducing" -- incredible; one end of the spectrum of "exactly what I'm looking for" 2) Portishead's "Dummy" -- equally incredible; the other (or one other) end of the above spectrum 3) Tricky -- very cool, but sometimes too snarlingly sinister 4) DJ Spooky -- really good, but maybe verging on being too ambient (or, as he would say, "illbient") 5) Air's "Moon Safari" -- too cute and loungey 6) Morcheeba + earlier Massive Attack -- also very cool; like that Bristol sound! 7) DJ Mark Farina, Funki Porcini, Fila Brazillia, et al -- good, but too acid jazzy for me. 8) anything with vocals that lean too heavily towards rapping -- NO THANKS!! HATE IT!! (ruined DJ Krush's "Meiso" for me, as an example) That's a good summary, I suppose. Any takers? And of course, there's always "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts".... As predicted, list traffic is really slowing to a crawl. C'mon, someone post something provocative. Maybe LJ, Susan, Viv or some other Feg libertine could post the top five strangest places she's been naked. I'd ask Quail for his list, but he'd have too much trouble narrowing it down to five. Or alternately, here's some fun fodder for you...Ebby's fave 15 of 1998. (It would be redundant to post the top two, don't you think?) 3. Billy Bragg & Wilco/Mermaid Avenue 4. Elliott Smith/XO 5. Hole/Celebrity Skin 6. Liz Phair/whitechocolatespaceegg 7. Spiritualized/Royal Albert Hall October 1997 Live 8. Jeff Buckley/Sketches for "My Sweetheart the Drunk" 9. The Halo Benders/The Rebels Not In 10. Portishead/PNYC 11. PJ Harvey/Is This Desire? 12. The Jesus & Mary Chain/Munki 13. Sonic Youth/A Thousand Leaves 14. Elvis Costello w/Burt Bacharach/Painted From Memory 15. Frank Black and the Catholics/Frank Black and the Catholics Really, I oughta rank Steve Reich's new recording of Music for 18 Musicians at around #6, but I was told to limit my list to pop/rock. Reissues and compilations were ineligible too, of course. Sorry Bawb. Regarding more topical concerns, I'd like to go see Scarnella/Petra Haden at the Troubadour tonight, but I'm sick and will probably skip it as a result. , Eb PS Got my own copy of "An Evening With Wild Man Fischer" in the mail today, after years of pricing and hunting! I think there's a new DJ Shadow record out. Something to do with Dr Octagon? Or am I getting that mixed up? You might want to try Nicolette - she did vocals on Blue Lines, and released a pretty nifty drum'n'bassy single a few years back called 'No Government'. I can't remember what the album's called. My brain isn't working. I should be able to think of lots more than that. A question for y'all: My friends' kids (ages 3 yrs and 3 mos., respectively) like to hear people singing, and since my friends can't carry a tune in a bucket, the mom has asked me to make a tape of songs her kids might enjoy. She suggested "Yellow Submarine," and I thought of "Effervescing Elephant." The 3-year-old also really likes the Pogues (she calls it "the pretty music" :), so I thought I could include some of their stuff, too. Are there any Robynsongs that might be good? Any other suggestions? In other news... After some mental struggle, I decided not to get the XTC box set. I've heard most of the stuff before and I'm not a collector, so I might as well save my money for the new album(s) - if they're ever released, of course... The new Peter Blegvad album, "Hangman's Hill," is kinda disappointing, but I did manage to snag a copy of his best album, "King Strut & Other Stories," which has been out of print almost since it was released eight years ago. WHEEEEE!!! It's *such* a good record - and so frustrating that so few people have heard it. I'm convinced, by the way, that Peter Blegvad is the American Robyn, for the following reasons: 1. He has an extremely dry and weird sense of humor. 2. He can use words like "secreting" in a song lyric. 3. He's very, very tall. Is that convincing evidence or what? For some considerable time now, I have identified the need for ELP to move forward artistically, while at the same time, re-establishing the passion and innovative qualities that the band had so clearly demonstrated throughout the 1970s. During those years, the albums we made were driven by a unified desire to try and exceed the frontiers of modern contemporary music. We took the most cutting edge technology of its time, along with sterling production values, and weaved it into the most compelling songs and music we could envision. Seven platinum albums later, I felt at least in some way, that we must have done something right. Unfortunately, in more recent times, ELP has failed to deliver the same vital and inventive music that had made it so endearing during its earlier years. I must accept my share of the responsibility for this, mainly because, for the sake of keeping harmony within the group, I compromised some of my essential beliefs, particularly in respect to the way the records were made in the studio. Although, as a result of these compromises, I was introduced to some of the world's very best producers, ( - - in particular, my good friend Mark Mancina, who has taught me so much and with whom I am currently working -- ), I still felt in my heart of hearts, among the most valuable contributions I could make to ELP was that of being its producer. Sadly, in the case of this new record, it was not to be. As we began planning and discussing the new album, increasingly, I did not feel comfortable with the artistic and musical directions that were being proposed. I have therefore decided, it is in my own, -- and in the band's -- best interest, that I depart at this time and pursue my solo career. I am deeply grateful to all of the fans of ELP who have supported the band over the years, and it goes without saying, that I sincerely wish Keith and Carl the very best of luck in whatever future endeavors they may choose. Kind regards, Greg Lake ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V7 #446 *******************************
