I was disappointed. It's nothing compared to Don't Look Back. The editing and direction are absolutely atrocious (Bob "helped" with editing...I'm not as dying to see Renaldo & Clara anymore now). I can see why ABC rejected the film -- it really was a mess. Nothing but quick cuts and handheld closeups for the whole damn hour. Makes Magical Mystery Tour look like a David Lean project. I'm glad that I saw it, but I sure don't need to see it again. There are lots of *snippets* of performances, but I think the only uninterrupted, beginning-to-end song showcased was "I Don't Believe You (She Acts We Never Have Met)." Bummer. I guess the best thing about the film was just seeing Dylan walking around like a real human being during THAT period, when he had THAT hair and THAT presence. Also interesting seeing the Band guys at such a young age, but ehhh...unessential. Johnny Cash and John Lennon make brief appearances too, by the way. Surreal starfucking moment: Before the film started, there was some promotional info about the museum, including a spoken introduction from Candice Bergen, telling us we should donate to the museum and help preserve our television heritage, blah blah blah. OK, so after the film ended, I walked back to the parking lot across the street, got in my car and started to back it out of the lot, and who's right there on the sidewalk adjacent to the driveway? Candice Bergen in the flesh! Creeeeepy! Perhaps she actually had pressing business at the museum -- I dunno. In other creepy news, I finally rented/saw the (deeply so-so) X Files film last night, and it turned out to include...bee attacks. bE PS Did some record-shopping after the film, and Storefront Hitchcock promos are already around...the going rate is $6.99. Hopefully, someone high up >at some other label is a Robyn fan and will have said label pick up his >catalog. I don't know much about this stuff, so I'll ask: whenever a big name gets signed to a major label later on in his/her career, how come the label never picks up the old albums?? For example, Elvis Costello when he got his Warner Bros. deal. If all the old Robyn stuff is up for grabs, and Robyn is signed to Warners, why wouldn't Warners want to release it? Oh, and while I'm at it, let me agree with Eddie about the overdubs. They're annoying. I haven't really listened deeply to the vinyl edition enough to notice, but I don't like them much. And while this whole package is being touted as a live album, from the comments at the new warners site its pretty obvious that Robyn treated the cd and vinyl different from the movie. He's only expecting you to see the movie a handful of times. The album, tho....he knows you'll listen to that over and over. So the temptation to add some stuff to it to make it a repeat-listener was too great. One last thing: They've known for years now that they were going to make this live movie/cd/lp. They knew the tracklistings quite awhile ago , maybe even a year ago. So why was such little effort put into the credits for the LP? Its an exact duplicate of the CD credits, even though the songs are different. An example is that Deni Bonet is credited on the LP for "Thundering" and "Beautiful Queen", but ....hello?? ....she plays on "Filthy Bird", and "Statue With A Walkman", too! Just amazing that for something that's been in the works for this long, the credits seem like it was just cut and paste at the last minute. back to your regularly scheduled posts, john ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Nov 1998 16:01:33 -0800 From: Eb Subject: Re: silly things > Well, unless some other label picks them up.
